Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)

Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no “creature comforts.” But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor he’s called home for the last three years.

To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesn’t need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, it’s an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

The Frugal Roundup

How to Brew Your Own Beer and Maybe Save Some Money. A fantastic introduction to home brewing, something I’ve never done myself, but always been interested in trying. (@Generation X Finance)

Contentment: A Great Financial Principle. If I had to name one required emotion for living a frugal lifestyle it would be contentment. Once you are content with your belongings and your lot in life you can ignore forces attempting to separate you from your money. (@Personal Finance by the Book)

Use Energy Star Appliances to Save On Utility Costs. I enjoyed this post because it included actual numbers, and actual total savings, from someone who upgraded to new, energy star appliances. (@The Digerati Life)

Over-Saving for Retirement? Is it possible to “over-save” for retirement? Yes, I think so. At some point I like the idea of putting some money aside in taxable investments outside of retirement funds, to be accessed prior to traditional retirement age. (@The Simple Dollar)

40 Things to Teach My Kids Before They Leave Home. A great list of both practical and philosophical lessons to teach your kids before they reach the age where they know everything. I think that now happens around 13 years-old. (@My Supercharged Life)

Index Fund Investing Overview. If you are looking for a place to invest with high diversification and relatively low fees (for broader index funds with low turnover), index funds are a great place to start. (@Money Smart Life)

5 Reasons To Line Dry Your Laundry. My wife and I may soon be installing a clothesline in our backyard. In many neighborhoods they are frowned upon - one of the reasons I don’t like living in a neighborhood. I digress. One of our neighbors recently put up a clothesline, and we might just follow his lead. (@Simple Mom)

A rebellion is brewing in home congressional districts of incumbent Democrats evidenced by the reaction at several town hall meetings.

Members are being forced to suspend meetings with their constituents, screaming protesters are being dragged out of events by police and officials are being greeted by protest signs and chants.

Rep. Tim Bishop, D-N.Y., has called off further events

Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., got an earful, too

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo

Watch what happened when Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-TX, went out to meet constituents recently.

And of course Rep. Michael Castle, R?-DE

Folks, we need to attend these and let them know your stand!

This country is full of (real)citizens who are driving vehicles in worse condition than these or are without any vehicle...

I think I may jump in my 15 yr old vehicle (which I have no intentions of replacing), and drive to the remaining nearby dealers and see what photos I can take of Taxpayer dollars in action, my grandchildren will probably appreciate the evidence of where part of their inherited debt was incurred.

maybe Mr. Thompson (/sarc) will post a thread for freepers to post photos of the insanity at their local dealers..

Country: USA
State/County: State of West Virginia

Description:

The entire Town of Sandstone and surrounding areas are being evacuated after a tractor trailer believed to be carrying radioactive material caught fire.

It happened right at midnight Sunday morning on I-64 at the 139 mile marker, which is near the Sandstone exit in Summers County.

911 dispatchers tell WSAZ.com that the tractor trailer was involved in an accident, possibly with a car, causing it to overturn and catch fire.

The truck was carrying a corrosive material believed to be radioactive. Dispatchers say it is unknown what material is involved. The dispatcher says the evacuation of the town is a precaution at this point, and there are no reports yet of anyone being exposed to the potential radioactive material.

There is no word yet on the condition of the truck driver or anyone else who might have been involved in the accident.

I-64 east and west is shut down in the area. Route 20 from Meadowbridge to Hinton is also closed. Emergency crews from Raleigh and Kanawha counties have responded to assist with the situation.

The material in question was UF6 or uranium Hexaflouride. Look it up on Wikipedia. It is nasty stuff. Other than nerve gas, about the nastiest.

What will they do to me?

My last 2 vehicles are parked in the front yard.

Godfather car, 1981 Lincoln, Mark 6, as I recall, they say that model was not made in that year, but my title and car manual says it is.

1980 Chevrolet full size half ton pickup...

Both would run with tlc, dead now from having been parked for several years.

Our leaders are insane in my opinion.

These cookies (inside out carrot cake cookies) are something my son would love. the ingredients are a little off (no carrots and 1.12 cups of flour!). The website says the same thing, though.

I’ll do a search and post a recipe that includes carrots in some form. Son is heading off to MEPS to join the Air Force tomorrow. I’d like to have this recipe on hand for whenever I can send him some goodies.

I figure there’s a 50-50 chance he will make it in. It’s all about his weight. He aced all the tests. But has stubbornly refused all advice on how to lose that last few pounds. (His stubborness, ie., immaturity, is why we think he desperately NEEDS to be in the military. They’ll make a man out of him.)

So, after dropping him off at the recruiters tomorrow, my plan is to go to the store and pick up some chicken and chuck roast that I see are on sale. And spend the day canning. It’ll keep me busy and keep me from worrying. Amazing how my new hobby is coming in so handy (and not just in ways dealing with storing food)!

If we wondered why obama was in such a rush to pass all the new laws, we now know, it was a quick takeover.

It was meant to fool the ignorance masses. Dumbing down education has served its purpose. Those of us here knew it right away. And Joe (the Plumber). I had a guy osme fix some dents in my Prius. Guy running his own business and working hard at it (did a great job too - at a very fair price). I think he reaized after moving my car from spot to spot in order for the sun to shine on it so he could see the dents, he realized we were conservatives (likely had Rush on the radio). He was mad as hell and going on and on about Obama. I feel so sorry for people like him, young and motivated and hard-working. He won't have a chance in this new country.

I am having computer problems and do not know if it will stay up to mail this or not.

I do know there is an adobe up date and I can’t find it, for some reason the download file is missing or lost on my computer ......

It keeps increasing the virtual memory and crashing.

I have spent hours on it and am going to be forced to admit defeat.

Don’t want folks to wonder what happened to me.

Good for you, keeping busy will help, in lots of ways.

I agree, for often when I meet a man, even years later, you can still see the strength they gained in the military.

It wouldn’t hurt the women either, if they would get off the womens libber platform and just train them for good uses.
