The biggest problem I see with mars is the lack of a magnetosphere. It can be overcome for small bases but to truly colonize we would need to terraform the planet.

Mars, the planet of our future...and probably our past.

anyway regardless of the truth of that..

Here we are in the 21st Century, when we should be reaching for the stars, going boldly forth where no man has gone before...we are spending the money we could be using for that battling a bunch of Islamic idiots who want to live in the stone age.

...and who want the rest of us to live in the Stone Age, too (or die, whichever is more convenient).

for some reason, hearing the phrase “Mars is the planet of our destiny” made Easter Island pop into my head (give everything to appease the gods, even to society’s detriment)

Mars is the planet of Islam’s destiny. Pack ‘em up and LEAVE them there. The rest of us can find something better.

I’d rather our govt pay to go to MARS than give billions to ACORN. Humanity has always felt the need to explore the unknown. Mars is just one more obstacle to conquer.

China? They seem to be our biggest "creditor." I think they probably own more of the US than anyone else does.

Why not have NASA meld with the U.S. military? The military has the money, manpower and technology. Russia and China’s space program are just branch of the military
