Smokebush is one of the most underutilized shrubs in the garden. It is superb for mixing up textures and has a personality all its own.
Works great as a specimen, or in a mix of dogwoods as back drop. Your photos posted are gorgeous.
Thanks, but it’s just a file photo. Husband bought me a new camera, so pretty soon I’ll find a spot to post things that are REALLY in my own garden, LOL!
I’m off to the garden center for the day. It’s sunny and warm and people will be in the mood to buy, buy, buy! :)
Gotta get them babies on the thread.
I haven't caught any hummer pics. Do have a redheaded woodpecker and rose breasted grosbeak though.
Both pretty rare yard birds around here.
I have a confession to make. I am on the twelve step program .... I’m Hiram (Hi Hiram) ...and..... I .... am ..... a plantaholic.
Pleae don’t take me near a garden center or even big box stores during spring or fall garden sales. I may not “chain” myself to a tree in a “center” but I have been known to throw a tantrum if I can’t have a plant I want. It gets ugly ....
And .... oh wicked woman Dianna tempts me ... her and her garden center .. buy, buy, buy, buy ..... I may have to start going to meetings again. sniff Your fault!
E pluribus pathetique
So now you know.
As for Knockouts the only advantage I've seen is their blackspot resistance. Here in hot & humid South Central Pennsylvania blackspot is an issue but I don't spray either except BT for the green worms when they show up.
sent you some back!
Dennisw is going to help me get them posted.
These are freeper Grammy's photos and description of her hummingbirds
The hummer is a female ruby throated hummingbird... the only kind we have in Tennessee. I spotted her and the nest about 10 days ago, and yesterday we had babies for the first time.
You might notice on the photo with babies, he photoshopped out a branch that was a distraction. You can also see some of the spider web she used to make the nest at the bottom of the nest.
It has been great fun to watch them. I have never seen a hummer nest before, so this is a treat.

Mother again
This is WONDERFUL!!!
I’ve never seen a hummingbird nest before either, and baby hummingbirds!
These wondrous things happen in our world all the time, but we don’t always have the opportunity to see them. I’m so glad you’re sharing them, and giving all of us the joy of seeing them and having the opportunity of praising our Creator for them. : )
Ping to post 28 for hummer pictures.
Thanks for the help dennisw. They look great! I will send this to Mr G so he can see them as well.
Diana you can try Photobucket to host the pictures you want to post on FR. Photobucket is where I have all the pictures I post here on FR. It is easy and best part it is free.
Yeah just more proof of God’s existence. The mother hummingbird does the same thing human mothers do. Feed their offspring, even though birds are hatched so an evolutionary jump or two away from humans that gestate then are born
“So now you know.”
You’re not alone. I have a dozen regular customers that I know by name and a few dozen others that I have a ‘nodding hello’ relationship with.
And you know what? Not a ONE of them EVER complains about ANYTHING. They appreciate what we do, always find something they can’t live without, and always leave with a smile and a “Good job; I really appreciate having you nearby!” from them.
I need to clone those people, LOL! :)
WOW! That is so neat. It’s so rare to find a hummer nest; especially up here. What a treat. :)
Husband was just saying last night, “We need more Hummingbirds in our yard” and I agree. I’m on the hunt to add some hummer plants and a few feeders here and there to draw them in.
And this from the man that just whacked down our Trumpet Vine; a TOTAL Hummer magnet, the goof!
anytime you want :)
Thanks! I knew someone here would know. Now, to just figure out how to plug my camera into my computer, LOL!
I’m married to a Computer/Microsoft Engineer, but I’m like the Cobbler’s Barefooted Children, fer Pete’s Sake!
Attracting butterflies is not that difficult
They sort of come anyway
Getting humming birds is the real trick
I hear they like red flowers
I do have a vine growing that puts out red trumpet like flowers
It's not a trumpet vine though
Humming birds come here in February so I have time to get a sugar water feeder
I know what to do. I just didn’t think he cared, LOL!
I used to get all excited when I’d see the Sphinx Moths flying around in the evening by my Four-o-clocks and other nectar producers.
THEN, I did some reading and found out that the moth is first the dreaded Tomato Hornworm! Eeeeek!
No more moths, because if a Hornworm is stupid enough to come NEAR my tomatoes, he’s a goner!
The easiest way is you take your photos then you take your flash memory card out of your camera and plug it into a card reader that plugs into the USB port of your computer. You can then see/transfer those photos into a folder you create on your computer
Lets say your camera uses an SD type memory card. You get an SD card reader for under $10
Get your husband to tell you what kind of memory card your camera is using. There are about 5 different ones
SD card readers--->>>

Using a card reader is safer (more convenient too) than connecting the camera to the computer and maybe dropping it or the batteries are low
