This afternoon I happened to look out the back and saw something
black and long in the middle of the yard. I just mowed yesterday
so I knew the yard was free of sticks and such.
Turns out it was a big black snake!
He isn't a rattler, does not look loke a water moccasin or a black snake.
What the heck kind of snake is he? He has the triangular head which
means he is a bad one, but I can't place his breed.
Anyway, photography being as dangerous as it is, he got wrecked up some
which is just as well. He might have bitten one of the animals.
So who knows any herpetology?

It looks like a water snake to me. I live in east Tx..on a lake.
But quite frankly, I had a dog killed from multiple snake bites (cotton mouths mating). I have had them in the house and crawl into the engine of my truck.
Sure, some snakes are beneficial. But if they can’t stay in their world and stay out of mine...they must go to snake heaven. And, as I’m sure you know, killing a snake with a hoe just ain’t that easy.
This from the guy who used his Glock to dispatch a beer can during the last big Hurricane to hit that area. :)
Of course ammo prices have gone up since then, and availablity has gone down.
In fact I went into an Academy tonight, mostly for grins, but also on the remote chance they might have some .22 LR with copper washed bullets, I'd take either solids or HP if the weight is at least 36 grains. The only .22 ammo they had was a half dozen boxes of CCI .22 short.
It was a Black Racer, before some idiot smashed it with a shovel!

My grandmother killed all snakes, although she preffered a hoe over a shovel. More reach, and you can swing a hoe to pretty decent velocity. Any snake that got anywhere in the yard, or near the chicken coops, ended up like that one.
But FWIW, I think that's a poisonous snake by the head shape, and the report of fangs. That makes it a cottonmouth given the location.
defenately not a king snake. i killed one yesterday and it was a moccasin.
Now why would our Humblegunner bother the Sheriff over a little ole' snake. Any needed shooting, he does himself.
They make other loud noises out there at the Keep as well.

Even Achmed the Terrorist was shot out there, a couple of times it seems. Once by a "contractor", who usually works in Iraq. He got himself run over once too.
Achmed is a lousy terrorist. Enthusiastic, but not very good at his job.
Kill all water moccasins.
I'd imagine the cats do pretty well at the "exterminator" job. Small dogs, like a dachshund, may be quite effective as well, even chasing rodents into their dens.
We had a 1/2 Australian Shepard, who would corner and kill squirrels, which takes smarts as well as good reflexes. The first one I watched her stalk. Every time the squirrel would raise its head, she'd freeze, and the squirrel would go back to its acorns. By the time the squirrel realized he was being stalked, the dog had worked her way between the squirrel and his escape tree. So he went the other way, but the tree over there had metal flashing about 4 feet off the ground, put there to keep his kind out of that tree. Worked too. The dog and the squirrel went 'round and 'round about 3 times, and then the dog finally managed to time her leap and snap just right, and the squirrels neck or back was broken. Devastated my young daughter, who also watched the whole thing. Until that is my dad, whose house and yard it was, explained that she was just doing what her kind of dog was meant to do. Latter she trained a larger/younger dog to be the blocker, while she went after the squirrels, in her own yard. She just hated the way the tree rats would sit on the fence and chatter mockingly. She got her revenge, and more than once too.
That's the way my Grandma always did it. She was convinced that even the non-poisonous ones were No Good, and after her chickens or their eggs.
Snakes for miles around trembled at the thought of Grandma's hoe. :)

I really really recommend getting a “snake zapper”. It is a stun gun which when applied to the skin around a snake bite appears to neutralize the venom. Zap every now and then until the pain of the bite is gone. Usually, it only takes 3 or 4 zaps.
Do a google search to find it.
Medical professionals will tell you this does not work and it is dangerous to apply an electrical charge to the body.
I live in Papua, Indonesia and I have seen people get bitten by death adders, use the zapper, and suffer no ill effects. Given the choice between a painful zap or having my foot amputated, well, I’ll take the zap.
It works with all types of venom. I’ve used it on myself for wasp stings.
