Good evening. As Arctic temps and snow grip much of the country, I pray for all those who travel and have to spend time outside.
Also remember the many affected by the economic woes this season...anecdotal stories we're all hearing bring the statistics to life, and add a somber theme to the time which is usually so joyful.
I listen in amusement to the word Deo when pronounced "Day-oh" as in "daylight comes and me wan go home". Similarly Alleluia when pronounced with a short "a - apple" sound and a LAY-lu-yuh.
:^)
I knew about Mervyn’s closing but haven’t heard about Toys R Us.
Hmmmm... surely the government can extend a bailout to toystores, eh? I mean after all, it’s for the chillllldrennn.
Yes, I think I’d heard about Linens N Things too.
Today the garage was 44 degrees, at 0800, outside was 34 degrees and a fog with heavy mist. It’s beginning to feel like CHRISTMAS. Roomey’s going to light the fire in the fireplace, I’ll turn on the tree lights, put my geese on the patio doors, put the tree in the kitchen, and finish wrapping and bagging presents. Tomorrow I’ll do the baking and mixing the dry stuff for the stuffing, boil the necks etc for the broth, peel the potatoes, scrub the carrots and get the egg nog ready. Chill the champagne and white/rose’ wine.
My cleaning lady is bossy. If we’re lazing around when she arrives, she stirs up a whirlwind, but she’s a gem. She keeps this old house squeeky clean and tells Roomey to pick up his socks. When we’re gone she does things she can’t do while we’re here, like the chandeliers etc. She even cleaned the cupboards, she told me they were dusty.
OK, that settles it. I’ll find a way to listen to him.
BTW, do you like Il Divo?
Oh yes, I read Impromptus as soon as it appears on NRO, love the stream of consciousness he uses...did Nordlinger mention his pet peeve at Christmas concerts? AKA the Conductor bringing up politics during a concert? Would love to hear him expand on that...;-))
I have returned, and my shopping is done. Sunday when we shopped it was -4, and everyone was bundled up. Yesterday when I shopped it was 9 degrees and people were hurrying to and from their cars without zipping their jackets. Today it was 28 and a few hardy souls were in sweatshirts without a coat. The rest of us were unzipped and enjoying the balmy weather.
I’m off to do preps for the cleaning lady, then to wrap gifts. If I finish, I’ll start chipping ice outside.
Last night, after posting, I went back and listened again. Then I listened to everything they had on YouTube.
They are a delight, aren’t they?
Never heard of Il Divo.
:-)Not that I heard...a couple of children called in - invited and encouraged by the host’s theme, of course - and Nordlinger was charming to them. Yes, I love his style and the bits of humor and wisdom. They fit my short attention span very well! LOL
I hear ya, Gran. I just got back from shopping. 21 here; and I was unzipped w/no hat/no gloves, along with everybody else. Traffic is moving a bit slow though; it was snowing when I left; has now stopped but the roads are a MESS; with more snow on the way tomorrow. I’m glad Ev drove up when he did (last night); one of the few lulls in the snowfall.
BLUCHER!!!!
I think they are wonderful. Opera trained voices, full orchestra, singing mostly pop songs. To die for.....
To this day...in my mind I sing We Wish You a Merry Christmas the way my chorus instructor ( Miss Forrest, (Fifi by nickname, God bless her! She had a thankless job teaching high-schoolers) taught us...
We wi you a Merry Chritma,
We wi you a Merry Chritma,
We wi you a Merry Chritma and an Happy New Year.

Josh Groban is mentioned on this website too, so I will go back and listen.
Il Divo is made up of 4 men from different countries, so they sing in a language other than English much of the time, but for me, it just doesn’t matter. It’s the quality of the vocals and instrumentation that grab me.
Wonderful! Thank you!
Missing you.
At this rate, you’ll be on deck early in the morning.
Yes they are delightful. After dinner, I’m going to do as you did and listen to all of their songs.
