What is the story behind this picture? [vanity]
n/a | n/a | none

I took the picture of this picture at Dave & Busters in Houston. It was in one of their banquet rooms along with many other stock, nostalgic pictures of New York.

Is this some kind of composite fake? Is she in a dirigible of some sort (unlikely)? Is she standing above a giant diorama? A scene from a movie?

If it's a total fake, it was totally out of place among the other pictures. I'm just curious if this picture has a story on the interwebs. My search attempts have been fruitless so far.

Any thoughts on this? Your help in determining the story that goes with this picture would be much appreciated.

“I’d have to say it must be from one of those dirigibles like the Hindenberg that took passengers, but damn that’s a dangerous looking outside platform for passengers.’

Yea, can't believe a safety conscious airship like the HINDEBERG, would do that.

It's obviously a composite.

Look at the composition of the observation deck...heavy metal, possibly of a nautical sort. And given that she is at a height many times greater than the WTC, her hair and clothing are barely blowing in the wind.

Most all of the other pictures were of New York in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s.

There was a pic of Marilyn Monroe with Joe Dimaggio, I think. One of Marilyn by herself. Another of Times Square. That pic with all the men/women in formal attire in a theater wearing 3-D glasses was there. One of Yankee Stadium. All of them were decidedly non-freaky, and then there was this one. All were in Black-and-White.

I didn’t ask the management of D&B for any info, because I seriously doubt they would have had anything to offer, other than a shrug and “It was here when I started working here.”

I seem to remember that a scale model of NYC was built for one of the world fairs. There were elevated platforms that were built to allow people to view the model.

Probably a dirigible. If the dirigible was traveling at the speed of the wind, her hair would be still.

If she were in a fixed position, her hair would be blowing around, a good indication that it was a dirigible.

Not a composite at all, just a very good historical photograph.

That would be such a cool way to travel. You could spend the whole trip on the observation platform sipping mint julips.

There's a large aerial photograph of Washington, DC, in the National Air and Space Museum, partially laid out on the floor. It's part of an exhibit about spy satellites and aerial reconnaissance.

There's no viewing platform above it -- the most you can do is stand next to it. But, maybe there's something similar of NYC somewhere?

I think she is standing over the diorama that is at the Queens Hall of Science, which was part of the Worlds Fair.

There's a large aerial photograph of Washington, DC, in the National Air and Space Museum. . . .

Shouldn't the Air and Space Museum be empty?

I'm not aware of any dirigibles with an exterior catwalk that have been flying since the World Trade Center was built.

This pic of NYC was taken sometime between 1971 and 2001 (the twin towers are visible). It appears to be a shot taken from a jet passing over the City at between 25,000 and 35,000 feet (I made a comparison using Google Earth).

Still on view at the Queens Museum when last I checked. They keep it updated with building changes.

But the fuzziness on this pic indicates distance — pics of this model would be sharp and close.
