Oil at $300

You would think that this story is right out of science fiction. But the facts appear to be that the US Democrat-controlled Congress intends to destroy the Republican middle class with $11 per gallon gasoline.

I've come to the opinion that we're living in a world scripted by Ayn Rand. If Obama is elected, I'd put our place at just a bit before the "Equality of Opportunity Act" (I think that was the name of it - it's been a while since I read Atlas Shrugged) is passed.

"you can’t strip enough to get cool."

But it is fun to watch them try! Well we have swimming pools to cool off in. I live in very hot east Texas (global cooling is fine with me, but it will be a b*tch up north). If I get to hot, I hop in the pool or go to my beer joint. The beer joint runs the AC, my customers (and staff) INSIST I turn it on. Hard to make a buck selling beer for $2 a bottle while your spending mega bucks on the AC. Lucky for me I have a real job, cause the damn beer joint doesn't make a dime.

Anyway, one can acclimate do just about anything above freezing. Freezing cold not only sucks, it will, sooner or later kill you.

Our electric rates are going to go up about 20%, which sounds like a lot but not when you realise gas has doubled in price.

I just got this month's gas bill, and I noticed a number of things... We've had yet another increase in NON-GAS costs (fees, line charges, etc...). Where my summer gas bills used to be around $15 a month, just the non-gas fees and charges are now about $26 a month. Then there's the gas itself. I seem to recall that gas USED TO cost less during the summer. There was just a 20% increase in the charge for gas on this bill. Electric rates have gone up... Gas is going to be REALLY expensive this winter, though nowhere near as bad as fuel oil.

"world scripted by Ayn Rand"

Agreed, I am getting very close to saying the hell with it, caching in my chips and just shutting everything I do for the collective down. I've got a few ideas I'd like to play with but as far as being part of the collective, screw that.

I would be filling my storage tanks before the winter comes and prices are doubled what they are now.

20 below in Maryland? Man that is cold, I've live in NH and upstate NY (long time) but I never saw 20 below. That is brutal. I remember getting water out of the well for the horses, had ice on it in the few seconds it took to carry the bucket to the barn. That was zero or so. I remember feeling numbing cold running to the wood pile in and back to the house in upstate NY, that was 5 below. Can't image 20 below. 100 degrees an 90% humidity ain't no fun either, but it sure beats 20 below.

no no no! LOL!
Not in Maryland.

I meant to say I wouldn’t want to live farther south than Maryland. Further than that and I get too miserable in the heat.

I live in upstate NY. On top of a windy hill.
20 below is not very common, but it does happen on occasion.

We will have a handful of days every winter that it gets below zero overnight though.

I do remember, about 2 yrs ago, we had a 3 day spell of 10 to 20 below - with that nice wind howling up the hill.
That was alot of fun.

>Instead of spreading doom and gloom, let’s start to think of constructive ways we can get out of this mess! /rant off<

Hold a yard sale and sell off some old stuff to get cash. #1 Then add another 6 inches of insulation up in the attic.
#2 Seal off the outside of the window frames.
#3 Buy new air seals for the entry/exit doors to the house
#4 Seal all the leaks in the heater ducts making them as efficient as possible.
#5 Any window that leaks air needs to be repaired, NOW, not when it is 30 degrees outside.
#6 Make sure you have sufficient heater air filters on hand to last the winter. They go on sale in the summer.

That’s what comes to mind without thinking too hard or spending much cash.

They tell us, sir, that we are weak; unable to cope with so formidable an adversary. But when shall we be stronger? Will it be the next week, or the next year? Will it be when we are totally disarmed, and when a British guard shall be stationed in every house? Shall we gather strength by irresolution and inaction? Shall we acquire the means of effectual resistance by lying supinely on our backs and hugging the delusive phantom of hope, until our enemies shall have bound us hand and foot? Sir, we are not weak if we make a proper use of those means which the God of nature hath placed in our power.-Patrick Henry

Time to get fired up for Independence Day.

My daughter is spending some time in El Salvador. According to one of her letters, it rains every night, but there are water shortages.

My point is that almost every shortage is a human problem. Often the problem stems from government: price controls, over-regulation, corruption, etc.. Nature is bountiful; it’s human industry and ingenuity that is short supply.

Dictators, and other politicians, are often rewarded for blaming the productive members of society. When blamed, threatened, and taxed, the productive members of society withdraw and produce less.

A long time ago (2001) I had an experience in which many people posted what they were going to do and when push came to shove, only about 10% had performed as they said they would.

We have all experienced disappointed. I know that ultimately I am the only one on whom I can count. Because of that I agree with your suggestion above outlining what we each can do to optimize our individual situations.

I've been around here a long time. Care to tell me what your let down was? You can Freep Mail me.

Our local electric utility has a fuel surcharge this year that comes close to doubling the cost of electric. They use coal and natural gas.

In Hinchey’s press release he make the following claim about “unused” land that is already being leased...

“These unused areas could produce an additional 4.8 million barrels of oil and 44.7 billion cubic feet of natural gas each day, nearly double current domestic oil production. That would nearly double total U.S. oil production, and is more than six times the estimated potential peak production from ANWR.”

Do you have any idea where these numbers are coming from?

The operative word in this paragraph, I’m sure, is “could”.

I’m just wondering how they can justify making claims like this.
Clearly - you oil folks would rather work in comfier conditions than 70 degree below desolate tundra.
