Morning, Mr. Mayor. Thank you for our Daily Bread today! Have a wonderful day!
With respect to your letters and other memorabilia, if there is no one else in the family who might appreciate what you have, have you thought of donating them either to a local museum or veterans group, or to the Smithsonian? They might be interested, or be able to make some worthwhile recommendations.
BTW, on one of our trips, we bought a CD of civil war songs to listen to in the car. The songs were both historical and awful. LOL!
.
Thank you, Oesy. I believe Yorkie has some things that should be put into a museum or Memorial for Veterans, etc. Mine are mostly personal (like the love letters) and presentations my husband received from clubs and organizations and from companies he worked for during the years. I guess we all wonder sometimes what happens to these things after (I’m) gone. Maybe its not worth putting on my worry list...LOL~~~My husband collected everything and has over 100 sets of cuff links. He always had to wear suits in his work and loved French cuffs. I must admit they did look great! We collected cuff links all the time. I couldn’t count the tie pins, tie tacs, etc. Guess the boys will want them for memories maybe?
Yorkie has her husband’s two purple hearts and other things that should be displayed somewhere!
My husband served 4 years in the U.S.Navy and was never wounded, thank goodness, but has no real awards from the Navy. Have lots of pictures of he and his shipmates and pictures of Basic Training groups....just lots of Navy group pictures. Guess maybe the kids may like those.
Suppose I have put you to sleep by now~~LOL~~I’m nuts!
.
I've got a boxful of pictures and slides from my NavyDaze along with two cruise books from two of my three WESTPAC tours. Also have a "yearbook" from Boot Camp in San Diego. Lots of pics of shipmates and a few of different diving jobs we worked on. Thinking back, wish I had taken advantage of the underwater camera we had in our shop.
Through this past year, I've been receiving e-mails from my ship's reunion group where guys share some Sea Stories during PIEDMONT's 40+ year history. I sent one item in with newspaper pix and stories from the time 1/6th of the enlisted crew were promoted to the next rank. 137 of us assembled on the DASH deck receiving our promotions and a handshake from the Skipper. A very proud day for us to sew on a new "crow" (mrsdd sewed on my 2nd class PO ensignia). We were notified on a Friday who got rated and that advancement ceremonies would take place on the following Monday. Short notice to get our uniforms in order. Took the rest of my uniforms to the tailor shop aboard the ship and had them sew on the rest of 'em. Course, with the dungaree shirts, it was just a matter of using and iron-on patch.
psst...that's me shakin' hands with Capt. Feaster
How wonderful, D.D. There’s a lot of pictures around here and not in good order. I had a wonderful picture of his ship in a nice black frame. Well, I have 2 sons and the oldest one came up one day and asked me if he could take it. He promised he would get his brother one made. He did take it to 2 or 3 places and couldn’t find anyone who could duplicate it. For one thing the way it was in the frame from the beginning, it looked impossible to get out of the frame.
It can be taken from the frame but because of the measurement of the long picture, no one was interested. And you know how it is....he still is going to do it but then its forgotten. I want each one to have equal of everything. It looks like I might have to put some pressure on to get that done. My husband had several rifles and some handguns and not long after he died, I told them both to come up so we could divide the guns between them. They did that fair and square and everyone was happy. Hubby had an old rifle (shotgun) don’t know what you call it, that belonged to his grandfather and they agreed one would take that one and the other would get two of the others. I kept a handgun although I am afraid of guns. LOL~~
I still get those monthly newsletters from his shipmate organization and they have a reunion every year. He always wanted to go so bad but they were usually so far away. The year he died they had it at Myrtle Beach (our favorite place) and we could have made that one had his health not failed. And they always sent a gift every year if you paid your $15.00 a year which we did. Sorry this is so long....by the way did your wife ever have to learn to iron those ‘whites’? I did!And I loved it because we were so glad he was off ship and had shore duty finally and we could live together. By the way he made it to 2nd class Hospital Corpsman. What does your PO stand for?
Cute! Are we talking about eating with a spoon or ‘spooning by the moon’? Or something else?
Have you done a google graphics or AltaVista graphics search for a similar picture of his ship? Sounds like there’s a problem because the picture is in a frame.
A few years ago, mrsdd took three B&W photos to kinkos to be enlarged to 8x10. In the photos, she was 2 yrs old sitting next to her Daddy on the back steps. Her Mom took the pix 1. sitting side by side each looking at the other, 2. both lean into each other and share a kiss, 3. both looking directly into the camera with big grins. Hmmmm, maybe I should scan em, photobucket and post ‘em.
Yep, she learned all about ironing a set of “whites”. Here’s a little something that didn’t sink in very quickly... she always commented that I did a much better job ironing my uniforms and suggested I iron ‘em instead. Young Love... I bought it hook, line and sinker. 43 yrs later, I’m still ironing. :)
About the PO... My rate was Shipfitter P (Pipefitter). That rate later became Hull Technician. My first years I spent working in the Pipe Shop. Then after Diving School, I finished out my enlistment working out of the Diving Locker. Shipfitter was still my primary MOS (job classification) but my secondary MOS was 2nd class Diver which became my #1 job. Had a “crow” on my left sleeve and a diving helmet on my right sleeve. Proud days!
Well, my husband honestly could iron his uniforms better than me but he would let me do them some. If you were particular about them, like he was, he truly didn’t mind doing them. He was very handy. That guy could fix anything. Sometimes I will have things that need fixing and I will think to myself “if he was here, it would have been fixed yesterday!”
He could even sew a little. He had an uncle who was a tailor and he hung around his uncle’s shop when he was little and he learned how to do things like that. Now all my knives are dull in the kitchen.....he always kept them sharpened for me.
I have a picture of his ship that I will post. G-papa found it for me when he heard me talking about the USS Norris-DDE 859, isn’t it funny how you never forget those things. I addressed enough envelopes when he was aboard ship that I could never forget that!
I always say to couples like you all to enjoy every single moment and from what I read about you and Mrs. D. you seem to do that very thing. After you’ve been together for a lifetime, its terribly hard to live alone. Don’t get me wrong, I try to live a full life now....God is good, He helps heal the awful pain. He wants me to be happy while I am here. (I’ll post the pic. as soon as I locate it.)

I missed morning here, so good afternoon!
I hate that your back is hurting and we miss you, too!
((((hugs))))
I talked to our puppy sitter and found that they did fine last night. She stayed over night with them and said they both snuggled up with her without a problem. Tonight they will be by themselves. We'll see how they do. If they seem stressed, she will stay over night tomorrow with them.
TTYL!
