More good news for Apple (AAPL) ahead of the 3G iPhone launch, scheduled for next Friday, July 11. Consumers have "unprecedented" demand for Apple's phone, according to new data from RBC's Technology Adoption Panel. From RBC analyst Mike Abramsky's note:
- 56% of those planning to buy a smartphone in the next 90 days plan to purchase an iPhone, up from 35% in March.
- 25% may buy the 3G iPhone "sometime in the future," more than twice the interest shown by the panel in March, 2007, ahead of the first iPhone launch.
- Purchase interest in Apple is 2x or more that of other brands surveyed: RIM 23% (RIMM), Palm 3% (PALM), HTC 2%, Nokia 2% (NOK), Samsung 2%, Motorola 1% (MOT), others 11%.
- Top reasons for buying the iPhone include lower price (67%), 3G Internet connection (63%), GPS (47%), Microsoft (MSFT) Exchange email support (35%), and third-party apps (20%).
- The jump is the largest interest ahead of any consumer phone launch recorded by RBC's panel since 2003.
Good news for Apple and its rivals: 10.5% of panelists intend to buy a smartphone -- any smartphone -- up from 7%-8% average over the last few years. That's a bigger addressable market for Apple and RIM, Microsoft, etc.

After about three months, I gave my iPhone to my son. I loved its Internet capabilities, its slick aesthetics, etc. I LOATHED the keyboard, however, and since my cellphone is my business lifeline, it had to go.
My pent-up demand is for the upcoming Blackberry Bold. Now there’s a good looking phone, and nothing beats Blackberry when it comes to business comms.

I hate the AT&T coverage in Seattle and you can only use them with the Iphone. Sorry Jobs, you won’t get my business till you dump your exclusive carrier arrangements.
AT&T is notorious for over subscribing their networks and you get dropped calls constantly with them. I’m sure its going to get even worse with everyone doing large data downloands on their 3G network.

Wouldn’t matter - since the iPhone is a world phone, it runs on the GSM radio network. (The rest of the world uses GSM; most US carriers use the incompatible and cheeseparing CDMA system.)
There’s only two companies in the US with a GSM net - ATT and TMobile. TMobile is so bad as to be basically unusable anyway in most areas.
So, even if you got an unlocked iPhone... what would you do with it???

Also, as a current iPhone user, I can tell you that I don’t have a dropped call problem and that my data downloads are pretty quick, even for 2.5G.
I was a long time ATT user. I used to have the infamous dropped calls problem - then I dumped the crappy Nokias they gave away for free at the time and went to a Motorola RAZR. The problem went away.
As for oversubscribing, not seeing it. And I’m a heavy user, 4-7000 minutes a month.

Dang I hope Jobs don't see this post, he probably won't sleep for a month. The people who are losing sleep right about now are the carriers that didn't go with Apple.
My carrier, verizon, who I hate with a passion, will be losing my business within 90 days when my current contract expires. The Apple iPhone 3g, combined with MobileMe (the new .Mac upgrade) and a home Mac will give me the most comprehensive and consistent computing platform on the market today.

What’s that supposed to mean? You think I DIDN’T give my iPhone to my son? Why on Earth would I make up something like that?
