Bacteria make major evolutionary shift in the lab
New Scientist ^

A major evolutionary innovation has unfurled right in front of researchers' eyes. It's the first time evolution has been caught in the act of making such a rare and complex new trait.

And because the species in question is a bacterium, scientists have been able to replay history to show how this evolutionary novelty grew from the accumulation of unpredictable, chance events.

Still not macroevolution

Did it change into a hamburger?

But sometime around the 31,500th generation, something dramatic happened in just one of the populations – the bacteria suddenly acquired the ability to metabolise citrate, a second nutrient in their culture medium that E. coli normally cannot use.

Cool!

Micro-changes to DNA over millions of years = the 2% genetic and 6% genomic difference between humans and chimps = “macro” evolutionary change.

Pretty simple really.

No, it developed a taste for orange juice.

Nonsense! The flat earth which sits right in the middle of the universe is only 5,678 years old.

Not exactly. To paraphrase C.S. Lewis: Science teaches us HOW God created the world, the Bible teaches us WHY.

Good one.

It’s in the Church of Darwin Argument Clinic Handbook, page 8913275328975481432513275815409243010243285.

“When browbeating, threats and ridicule don’t work, go to the flat earth!”

Incomplete; but then, Biblical exegesis wasn’t Lewis’ strong point. Perhaps more like, “The Bible teaches us to what end God created the universe in six normal days.”

six normal days

Except, the Bible doesn't say six 'normal' days, it uses the term Yom which can translate as a 12 hour day, 24 hour day, or an 'age' of indeterminate amount of time (such as "in the Day of the Lord" that is often used.)

Are you saying the Bible is infallible, and that Creation happened in exactly 6 days because the Bible says so?

Odd. I've been told many times on this board that macroevolution has been observed many times in the lab. But according to this article, this was a First.

And because the species in question is a bacterium ...

Oh. Singular. I see. We're still talking about one species so I guess this isn't macroevolution.

The Bible also teaches us how behave, how to live, how to love, how to give, how to forgive, how to ask forgiveness, how to find our way home, how to raise our children, how to pray, who to bind our allegiance to...

The Bible does tell us How God created the world. He spoke it into existence through Jesus Christ - the Word.

For by Him was everything made that was made.

Every time God said, “Let there be...” and there was.

If that’s not specific enough for you, then you and C.S. Lewis are right, the Bible does not teach us How.

No, you need to re-read the entry. Take the words literally. It is the first time we have seen evolution making a new and rare trait. That does not mean it is the first example of evolution within the lab, but the first time for this new and rare trait, much more of a complex jump than typically witnessed.
