The Hobbit Hole XXXVI - O! Water cold we may pour at need...

Posted on 05/03/2008 8:48:06 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Very nice bayonet for the rifle. I don’t recall seeing a ‘peep’ or aperture sight on any military rifle until the P-14/17 came along. I know my scores went up when I shot the US Enfield; I liked that rifle a lot. But like many of them, went away to fund other purchases. I’m glad to see you held onto yours.

heh, well, we’ll see how this works. Her dad is supposed to put a ‘hot wire’ around the top of the fence. He figures he only has to keep it on a week and then they can turn it off. Phoenix will have shocked himself a couple times and will leave it alone. Time will tell.

My day. It was full of FAIL!

I write, because I know you can understand.

I have a week long thing in NM that starts at 8:00 tomorrow morning. I am currently sitting in my la-z-boy in MD having spent over 14 hours in Philadelphia Int'l trying to get a flight out. Cancellation after cancellation, endless thunderstorms, a near riot by a gate full of Miami-bound Cuban Americans who were strung along for 6 hours before canceling their flights. I read an entire paperback. Texted my DH a bajillion times, walked speed laps up and down the whole airport. Stalked a bunch of flights trying to get stand by. More FAIL!!

Finally I call the special 800 number for refugees and get told that if I want to fly out of Philly, its not going to happen before Tuesday! Hah! I'm going out of BWI tomorrow at 0-dark-thirty but I'm missing half of my first day at my very important event.

Grrr.... the alarm is set for 0300 tomorrow.

Heh. Or you can turn your place into a dog and cat bed and breakfast: Phoenix during the week. Jackson on the weekend.

That would explain the tiny sights! I zeroed in two of our ARs today because I have to teach my wife to “effectively” use hers later this week. I’ve been spoiled with electronic sights, and scopes, and had to just use the peep sights today. But I still scorched my 13 yr old who helps me but has much better eyesight and has come close to outshooting me lately! ;-)

I consider modern optical and electronic sights to be the greatest single advance in firearms since the introduction of the pointed FMJ bullet in the early 20th century. But traditional marksmanship with iron sights has to be taught first. A person then appreciates how much more high-tech sights adds to racking up hits faster, and at longer ranges.

Captured enemy in Iraq say the most terrifying thing is how fast American troops swarm over them, and how efficient Americans are at getting quick killing shots in. Thank training, Armson, Eotech, and Aimpoint, among others.

Say a quick prayer for me this week... I'll be teaching my wife how to use the peeps on her AR. I KNOW she's going to take one look and ask me WHO in the world designed them?! I'm sure that she's never seen anything like them before. I'll be drawing the little picture to help explain first so she'll understand. I think she'll pick it up pretty quick. She's a smart girl too!...an RN with a background in neuroscience. :-)

But I KNOW she's going to have "words" about those peep sights! I'm certain that we'll get past it.:-)

I've been telling everybody for the past 10 years that when they purchase a home defense weapon, budget for TWO additional items on the weapon.

1. An electronic sight.

2. A decent weapons light.

Far too many people don't invest in these items. But trying to wake up at "O-Dark-Thirty" at things that go bump in the night and find your gear is trouble enough only to be topped off by having a weapon that's virtually unusable in the dark, and with no light.

The people who want to argue about lights and sights get my standard "story". I simply ask if in the event of an armed encounter in the home at night, do they want to stop the perp, or potentially shoot a child or another loved one? They usually get mad at me at this point, and I tell them that identifying a target in the dark is very, very important.

Making them think about accidentally shooting family members in the dark usually causes them to SERIOUSLY consider the merits of a decent sight, and a light.

I agree with you. The enhanced ability to get a sight picture on a target in reduced, and low light is a TREMENDOUS advantage! But as you've said...basic marksmanship first! ...and that's what I'll be showing my wife this week. She's an experienced shooter already with the Colt Series 80, .45ACP, as well as several .22 rifles we have here, so I don't think she'll have a lot of problems....but I just KNOW she's going to hate the sights! I'm hoping that (as with a lot of people) that she learns to like them better with time. I'm one of those that really like peep sights, but I didn't start out that way. :-)

but I just KNOW she's going to hate the sights!

Is there an indoor range where you can rent something with ordinary open sights, like a .22? Explain to her how she would have to focus on THREE different objects at different distances. A peep sight eliminates half of that workload.

It's important to become an expert with iron sights, if just to gain confidence in yourself and your weapon. The Marines still emphasize that, but the Army dropped that concept ages ago, just going for pop-up silhouettes, rather than paper bulls eyes. You've got to learn confidence in your rifle and your basic skills. Once you know you can make certain shots with just the peep sights, you know you're going to clean up with some advanced sighting equipment. You'll also be able to fall back to iron sights if you ever have to with nothing more than a sense of annoyance.

Yikes! We're supposed to fly out Thursday morning! Hope we don't have too many delays! At least if we're delayed a day, it won't be too bad, because we're actually getting to H'burg a day earlier than we needed to be there. I wanted a day to do all the shopping for stuff that Joseph will need for his dorm room.

It has been a bear of a summer for flying, at least this last half of it has been.

Fun, for the most part! I mostly hung out with some folks from the slow jam, talking and playing a bit. The guy that runs the jam has a music store, so he had a booth set up with all kinds of stuff for sale, and a lot of us hung out in the near vicinity when we weren’t listening to the bands. I learned a cool new tune, too.

I would have liked to do more jamming, but when it got dark and people were playing out in the camping areas, I chickened out, because I didn’t know where the people I’d met were camping and I felt funny wandering around in the dark with a guitar, peering into groups of strangers. Next time, I’ll make sure I know where folks are going to be camping. Or get better about crashing the jams. ;-)

Of course, I’m also feeling pretty humbled, ‘cause although I think I’ve improved quite a bit in the past few months, I’m still very obviously a rank beginner when it comes to this style of music. On top of that, I tense up and can’t play worth doodly when I’m in front of people, so I looked like even more of a beginner. But it’ll come with time and practice, I know. Just frustrating at times.

I woke up yesterday with a horrible headache, I think partly due to tension (which continued during the drive home — driving in the dark scary!!) so I kind of laid low.

Slow jam next weekend...’nother (free!) festival the weekend after that...so I’ll get more practice!

How fun! Glad your comfort zone is expanding.

We spent the weekend working on house projects, getting churched up, and ready for our anime convention this week. I spent about five hours Saturday with a spreadsheet making schedules for that...

Yeah...well...what's frustrating is that it *was* expanded, once upon a time. I played open mics. I sang in public, even.

I don't think I'd realized how much I pulled back until I started up with this stuff again. Oh well....

I did hear that the local Irish session is still going, despite word to the contrary on the site where it was listed. There was a guy at the festival that heard me playing an Irish tune and told me I should come. I guess the guy who used to run it isn't running it anymore, and took down any information on it, but it *is* actually still going.

Oh, and...

Ow.

Spreadsheets can be evil things.

Though...unlike Microsoft Word, they probably don't spend their off hours plotting ways to make me tear my hair out.

I *hates* Word. Luckily I don't hafta use it at home.

Yeah, but I had to make the spreadsheet in *OpenOffice’s* version of Excel. Which is like Excel only really really really painful.

Ah well, I volunteered.

Hey guess what! I have a serpiginous lesion in my left inferior colliculus!

Gee, 2J...I'm just now reading this. Will you find out more about what that means today?

I'm thinking lesion at least sounds like something that shouldn't spread much, right? Better than some alternatives....

Keep us updated! We're worrying about you!

Heh...yeah, that’s what I use at home. But I don’t typically bother with the spreadsheet.

I like the OpenOffice word processor better than Word. But I admit to liking Excel. As you said, the Open Office equivalent is...painful.
