RETHINKING ‘IDOL’
AUDITIONS SHOWN AS FLASHBACKS NEXT YEAR
Post Staff Writer
April 28, 2008 — THE producers of “American Idol” - worried about sink ing ratings - are considering some major changes to the show, including making the auditions flashbacks.
Execs for Fox have quietly begun taking audience surveys to see how fans might react to a number of changes in the hit show’s format, according to a report yesterday.
“Suppose the first few weeks of ‘American Idol’ started in Hollywood with flashbacks of the auditions,” one survey question asks. “Would that increase or decrease your enjoyment of ‘American Idol’?”
Though “Idol,” now in its sixth year, is by far the most-watched series on TV, the ratings have begun to slip this season - the first time that has happened on a regular basis.
Last Wednesday’s results show, which saw Irish singer Carly Smithson booted, was the lowest-rated episode in five years, according to trade reports.
“We’re not in denial,” Fox exec Preston Beckman told Broadcasting & Cable, the TV business weekly. “It’s still the biggest show on TV, but that doesn’t mean there are things we can’t do.
“The feedback from this year, you’ll probably see on the show next year,” he said.
Among the other questions on the survey, a copy of which was obtained by B&C and posted online yesterday were:
* Is the banter among the judges too much or too little?
* And do fans want to see more of host Ryan Seacrest, or less?
The survey is being conducted online, the report said.
Those types of polls are notoriously unscientific. But the execs say they are looking for results that are overwhelming - one way or another - to base decisions on for next year.
The talent show is hardly in a panic about plugging the leaks in its ratings.
Even in its worst week, “Idol” drew 22.6 million. That’s 30 percent higher than the usual No. 2 show, “Dancing with the Stars,” a huge margin in TV terms.
And though it does seem clear that some of the shine is starting to wear off “Idol,” the erosion may be beyond the control of Fox and the show’s producers.
As one cable news analyst pointed out after the last week’s Pennsylvania primaries, the Hillary Clinton-Barack Obama race has gotten so exciting, “it’s even beating ‘American Idol.’ “
That's a good point.
Between that and the Idol Gives Back maniputhon, the AI appeal is wearing thin.
I want to be entertained, period. Good old fashioned, guilt-free wholesome pleasure.
Don't hit me up like grocery store panhandlers.
I think AI is trying too hard to find an excuse, ANY excuse for the slipping numbers. They don't want to admit what is obvious to the rest of us. Their beg-a-thon is ruining their numbers.

What a great vacation hairdo ~ just coordinate everything in pink & green to match the beads!
So, what was the deal with Carly talking animatedly with Seacrest in the background as Syesha was singing her song (the night Carly was eliminated)?
The camera cut to that quickly - she was talkin rather than watching Syesha perform - cut away, and then you could see it again in the long shot.
Kinda rude, I thought.
Did you see Jason yawning while seated during the results show? I spotted it and then they reshowed it on TV guide network. I really think Carly thought Syesha was leaving....
No, I didn’t see that. Oops.
Hey kids, you’re on about five different cameras! (grin)
Two reasons for that:
1) Most of the viewers don't know who the hell Andrew Lloyd Weber is, and/or they don't like his songs.
2) The results show is an hour long. Everyone knows that the first 55 minutes of that are nothing but fluff and stage drama. They might watch something else until the last 5 minutes.
Absolutely right!
The producers usually have a sharp eye for spotting problems with the show and for getting rid of them (like celebrity guest judges).
Someone there has to understand that this preachy, guilt-filled, THREE HOUR begathon is the problem--not the auditions.
Well said!
I might post that at the beginning of next year's thread :)
I agree in part.
I like to see the auditions of possible winners. But the focus on the auditions has always been on the clowns - those who have no chance to win. I find that very distasteful and boring to boot. Show us the future talent. That will keep my attention. As it is, I really don't watch the early shows and won't unless they make this change.
They didn’t show as many of the bad ones this year which was nicer.
That is precisely what I did with the first two seasons. I only saw that last 5 minutes of both of the first two seasons. I kind of wish I had watched both seasons fully.
How would you compare those first two seasons with the others seasons? Do you think they are all equal or were there improvements made?
