Did you know?

Patent leather shoes and handbags can be made to shine again by polishing them with milk. Just use a soft cloth to rub the milk into the material to give it a new finish.

If you can’t get ahold of rock salt because everyone beat you to it, try sprinkling some kitty litter on that ice to prevents slips and spills.

Use floor wax on your snow shovel to keep snow from sticking. If it’s metal it will help to prevent rusting as well.

To keep paint can lids from sticking, rub some petroleum jelly around the rims of the lids.

Heat a nail over a flame before driving it into a plaster wall. It will keep the plaster from cracking.

If you don’t wish to subject your dog to a bath in cold weather, rub baking soda into his fur and give a good brushing afterwards.

To prevent soap scum from building up on a shower door, rub a soft cloth moistened with baby oil over it.

A half cup of rubbing alcohol to 1 quart of water in a spritzer bottle is an excellent solution for cleaning windows and is especially good in cold weather.

Don’t forget the love of your life this month. Do something special for your mate. Such loving expressions have a way of enriching your own life many times over.

"potassium nitrate<<<

"You are correct, Potassium is what is missing from our soil here."

"The other problem is the wind, you cannot get compost or mulch to stay around, it all blows away."

All you can do right now is go out there with a shovel and turn dirt over and add everything in it and mix it up. Then add water to turn it into mud so everything mixes together.

Next spring, plant whatever you want there. Those cold desert winds are bone-chilling and relentless. Most people don't know that deserts get very cold, with freeways shut down with snow and ice and flash floods.

http://earthnotes.tripod.com/soda-bread.htm

No Yeast Bread

If you need, or want, to remove yeast from your diet, but can’t stand the thought of giving up bread, this recipe gives you an alternative. The Irish gave us this one, out of necessity when yeast was unavailable to them, but I’ve made a couple of refinements. The vinegar is essential because baking soda requires an acidic component to do its work. You could also use buttermilk, or milk with 2 tsp of cider vinegar added. This recipe makes a 2 lb. round loaf that looks like the graphic above. Use a pizza pan for baking, preferably one of the silvertone no-stick type. Otherwise you will need to flour the bottom where the bread rests to keep it from sticking.

Preheat oven to 400ºF.
Ingredients
4 cups flour
1 tbsp sugar
1/2 tbsp baking powder
1/2 tbsp baking soda
1½ cups water
2 tsp vinegar (cider or white)

Combine dry ingredients and mix. Combine water and vinegar. Add wet ingredients to dry and mix. Turn dough out onto floured surface and knead for two or three minutes (no need to overdo it). Shape into a round (about 1½ to 2 inches high), then place on pan. Dip a sharp knife into flour and cut an ‘X’ into the top of the loaf. Bake 40 minutes. Remove, and while hot, glaze with 1 tbsp melted or softened butter.

OPTIONS: Go to the bread menu and check out the various glazes. Any of those can be used to achieve a desired result. The butter glaze gives flavor as well as softens the crust.

Corncob Molasses

Yield: 4 Servings

Take about a dozen corncobs (sweet corn preferred)
and boil about 3/4 hour in 3 pints of water. Take
out cobs; strain, add a pound of good brown sugar
to the juice and boil down enough to make a syrup.
this is a very good substitute for maple molasses,
the cobs giving it this flavor.

FINALLY! One that I believe will work! Read on:

Cat litter keeps deer out
What keeps deer out of the garden???

Used cat litter! Deer do not know the difference between cat and
bobcat scat, and won’t go near a spread of cat dirt. They put litter
boxes in the barns for the kitties, and regularly (once or twice a
week) dump the used sand all around the outer perimeter of the
gardens. Deer do not know the difference in feline urines. It all
smells like bobcat to them!

It does indeed work, Granny. I put the cat’s used litter all around the perimeter of my yard. Keeps out the other critters as well. I’m not sure about snakes, but I must say last year after I started this, was the first year I saw no snakes in my yard.

An easy way to add an exotic touch to curries or grain dishes.

Chilling time: 30 minutes

1 pineapple
1/2 cup of raisins

Peel and core the pineapple and cut into strips. Juice the strips and reserve all of the pulp.

In a blender or food processor, combine the pineapple pulp, raisins, vinegar, ginger, lemon juice and cayenne pepper; blend until the raisins are coarsely ground.

The chutney can be served immediately, but it will taste better if it is refrigerated first for 30 minutes. Leftover chutney can be stored in a covered container in the refrigerator for at least a week.

Chopped Zucchini Mexicano
by Nomi Shannon
© 1998 Nomi Shannon. Please copyright notice below.
Serve this ‘hot’ and pretty salad on a bed of sprouts or as stuffing in a red pepper. Use the highly flavored jalapeno, garlic and cilantro to taste. Some jalapenos are devilishly hot, so be careful. This salad is intended to be a side dish rather than an entree. It looks attractive on the plate and its intense flavor works well as a condiment.

1 medium zucchini, chopped
1/4 red onion, chopped
1/2 red pepper, chopped
1/2 - 1 jalapeno pepper, chopped (to taste)
1/4 cup chopped cilantro (or more, to taste)
1 small clove garlic, minced
Pinch ground coriander seed
Dash Bragg’s
Dash lemon juice

Toss together, adjust seasonings. Serves 3-4 as a side dish.
