Americans finding soaring food prices hard to stomach can battle back by growing their own food. [Click image for a larger version] Dean Fosdick Dean Fosdick
Home vegetable gardens appear to be booming as a result of the twin movements to eat local and pinch pennies.
At the Southeastern Flower Show in Atlanta this winter, D. Landreth Seed Co. of New Freedom, Pa., sold three to four times more seed packets than last year, says Barb Melera, president. "This is the first time I've ever heard people say, 'I can grow this more cheaply than I can buy it in the supermarket.' That's a 180-degree turn from the norm."
Roger Doiron, a gardener and fresh-food advocate from Scarborough, Maine, said he turned $85 worth of seeds into more than six months of vegetables for his family of five.
A year later, he says, the family still had "several quarts of tomato sauce, bags of mixed vegetables and ice-cube trays of pesto in the freezer; 20 heads of garlic, a five-gallon crock of sauerkraut, more homegrown hot-pepper sauce than one family could comfortably eat in a year and three sorts of squash, which we make into soups, stews and bread."
[snipped]
She compares the current period of market uncertainty with that of the early- to mid-20th century when the concept of victory gardens became popular.
"A lot of companies during the world wars and the Great Depression era encouraged vegetable gardening as a way of addressing layoffs, reduced wages and such," she says. "Some companies, like U.S. Steel, made gardens available at the workplace. Railroads provided easements they'd rent to employees and others for gardening."

So many people are stuck on the latest thing such as the economy, Obama as president, are the car companies gonna survive, and so on. Since President Bush kept us safe for seven years we have gotten complacent. It's important you keep on top of the terror threat. I would think it would be relatively easy for terrorists to take over a few hotels in New York like they did in Bombay, or terrorize a school like they did in Beslan. It's easy to get distracted by stuff but the War on Terror is really the most important issue today. And we elected a guy who has no clue on what to do! God help us.
Good idea! I never run out of ideas—just time! LOL
And energy. It’s dreary here again today. Cold and raining. Makes you feel blah. I think I’m going to spend most of it napping. :) I’d make a good bear.
Wouldn’t it be great if the schools would incorporate this kind of activity for children? Teaching them to give and be creative at Christmas time? The schools never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity. <<<
What do you want out of today’s schools? An education?
Yes, much could be taught, and would be, if it were not meant to be a brainwashing tool.
If you have the time, set it up through your church, they would welcome it.
Or, do as a couple did for me, I am sorry I don’t recall their names, but do every thing else about them.
Both less than 5’ tall and I was already 5’8”, so it was difficult for a 14 year old to bend over to get her orders...LOL
All 5 of us kids were in homes, even then they did not want teenagers in family homes, so I was in the Boys and Girls Aid Society home for children.
This Couple, contacted the home and made arrangements to take 2 of us out, maybe once a month.
Starlight Light Opera in San Diego is worth the effort to go to in the summer, live on an outdoors stage, wonderful and I have never gotten over my love for anything live on a stage.
Imagine “Starlight Opera”, to a young person, who only 7 years before lived in the San Diego river bottom, in a fruit tramp camp....
They also had a pottery studio at home, and the months that we went to the studio, we would take long walks and look for leaves that we could use for patterns in the wet clay and they then fired them for us and I of course made wall pockets and gave them to mom.
LOL, I still do not know what to put in wall pockets.
Since then, I have taken 5 or 6 semesters of ceramics at the colleges and still work the clay on a pattern basis, hate the machine made pots and never mastered it.
But give me a ball of clay and I will roll, pinch, poke and make something.
And believe me, that was a lot of years ago.
The other girl that went out with us, was a real...she was going to be an opera singer, grew her hair almost past her knees and did not have ‘normal problems’, not a friend type of person and not some one that I kept with.
Ten years later, I was a licensed foster home in California, and they asked me to take a family, LOL, I think it was 4 kids, as they were being removed by the court from the mothers care.
I did, and the first visiting day, the mother showed up, and it was the ‘gonna be an opera singer’ from the home.
I do not recall a single detail about the father. Or if there was one?
I finally asked for the kids to be moved, the older boy, about 9, kept the family torn apart and was ruining the life for my own and a couple other kids that i had...If he saw his younger kids having fun, being kids, he would stop them.
If he saw my kids having fun, he would stop that too.
I am sure he thought that if he was bad, then he would be sent home.......but real life does not work like that and he was ruining the younger kids lives to boot.
At the time I was lucky, my case worker, cared about the kids she controlled.
When I complained that 3 year old Mark, the child of 2 unfit parents, was not right in his actions.
She came on the weekend, as my friend and observed him, so she could see exactly what I was seeing.
If Mark went missing, I would find him standing Gils size 13 Navy dress shoes in my bedroom, lost in a daze.
{My first husband was Navy}
If Gil would allow him to touch his guitar, he would go into the dazed / coma.
And he did nothing else, did not play or take part in anything the other kids were doing.
His parents still had legal custody, so mama would come and get him and take him out for the day, except she didn’t bring him back.
About 2 am, I would get a call from the father, “I took Mark away from that bitch and I am putting him in a taxi, to return him to you”.......and he would arrive alone in a taxi.
My case worker, had him placed in a special home, with people who knew how to handle the type of problems he had.
At 3 years old, he was one step from going into a catatonic coma, if I have the term correct, a not unusual thing for battered children and not something a young mother, untrained in caring for them, can handle.
Several years later, I took my sister in law to the El Centro hospital, she was having twins.
I wound up setting in the nurses station, as the event progressed and there was a 3 year old boy there in a high chair, that all the nurses talked to, a little odd, as it was the middle of the night.
When I started paying attention to the child, a nurse took me out in the hall, explained that they were fighting the child step off into a catatonic coma and that no matter what he did that I must not say the word NO to him.
She would only tell me that he was an abused child, on the brink of being lost.
I spent most of the night with the child, as all El Centro choose that night to give birth, but I will always admire the extra effort those nurses put out for him and pray that they were able to help him.
I figured, that I understood what being a child without a home was like, so I should be a foster parent and was in 3 states.
Granny, why don’t you ping the list and tell them here are a bunch of make-a-gift ideas here just in time for the holidays? These are tight times and I bet folks would appreciate some new ideas. Like Garden Girl said, so many store bought gifts get returned, given away or never used.<<<
Vickie has a good idea and therefore, consider yourself pinged.
It’s important you keep on top of the terror threat. I would think it would be relatively easy for terrorists to take over a few hotels in New York like they did in Bombay, or terrorize a school like they did in Beslan. It’s easy to get distracted by stuff but the War on Terror is really the most important issue today. And we elected a guy who has no clue on what to do! God help us. <<<
It is far easier than you may realize and a bigger threat than so many can even dream of.
They came up with a computer disk, about 4 years ago, that had the plan to take a San Diego school, Beslan style.
The subway attack has been planned for years, they have managed to capture the plans, in places like a bombed out cave in Afghanistan and several in Iraq.
Like Hitler, the terrorists, keep journals and plans, down to the tiniest detail.
Good idea! I never run out of ideasjust time! LOL<<<
You’alls commands have been followed...LOL
I never did find a job, that just wanted me to dream up wild plans and did not expect me to develop them.
I agree, the bed is a good place to be on a grey, wet day.

I made this using alternate flours since I am allergic to wheat. It was really good. I used 1 Tbsp each of the following flours: quinoa, soy, potato starch and white rice. I added some real vanilla also. It was a real treat for me.
Thanks for all your neat tips.

For really red lips, put diaper rash ointment on your lips b/f bed. In the morning the red will be gone. Do this only at night, not in the morning
especially when you have a job interview in an hour.
Cold Sore Tips
Posted By TipNut On March 8, 2007 @ 6:47 am In Beauty & Health | 3 Comments
Here are several different methods that Ive tried for healing or preventing cold sores from forming and they have worked for me. Its best to apply any treatment as soon as you notice the tingling that happens right before a blister appears.
Some of the methods can burn or cause a sting, numb the sore spot with an ice cube first if that bothers you.
Healing Coldsore Tips
Try *one* of the methods below, do not apply everything all at the same time.
* Perfume
* Vodka
* Nail Polish Remover
* Toothpaste gobbed on the blister spot and left there as long as possible.
* Tea Tree Oil (melaleuca oil)
* Vinegar
* Baking Soda
* Hydrogen Peroxide
Keep dabbing and applying the treatment until blister disappears. I know some people pick and poke and try to get the sucker to pop or drain, but thats never worked well for me (bigger mess and possible scar to deal with).
Also I find it helps to keep the lips covered with chapstick or lip balm, slather it constantly as soon as I feel a blister forming.
Please remember to use separate hand towels, bath towels, and wash cloths when you have a cold sore, its the herpes simplex virus and its very contagious. Also avoid sharing utensils, dishes, cups and avoid kissing for awhile.
This virus can cause blindness if it gets in your eyes, so avoid touching your eyes unless you have thoroughly washed your hands first.
Do you have any tried and true home remedies for cold sores? Id love to hear them!

I use a little bit of Super Lysine Plus cream as soon as the tingle starts. The active ingredients in this are Zinc Oxide and L-Lysine. I works 90% of the time. You can purchase it at a health food store or drug store.

I think Ive tried everything for my cold sores, including Doctor prescribed medications! The worst thing for me was creams, I wanted to dry out the cold sore, not keep it moist, which made it worse. After trying, what I thought was everything, my Doctor suggested L-Lysine. Its a capsule and it not only helps prevent cold sores, but aids in calcium absorption and retention. You can purchase it at any health or drug store. I take one a day and increase if I do get a cold sore. If my cold sore does break out (which is rare since taking the L-Lysine) I then use a clear water type liquid prescribed by my Doctor called Sab- Idoxuridine (its expensive but very little is used). Ive used these two things now for about 10 years and my cold sores are very few and far between :)

Quirky Tips for Noxzema Skin Cream
Posted By TipNut On May 9, 2007 @ 6:43 am In Household | No Comments
Here is a list of what I think are the more interesting tips for Noxzema uses that were published in the following book:
Title: Clean Your Clothes With Cheez Whiz
Author: Joey Green
* For scuff marks on patent leather shoes, try rubbing in Noxzema Skin Cream with a soft cloth.
* Noxzema is also good for removing paint and stains from hands, its more gentle than turpentine.
* Apply Noxzema to insect bites, takes away the itching.
* Remove chewing gum from hair or carpeting by rubbing Noxzema into the bubble gum.
* Removes dried glue residue and gum left from price tags and labels on glass and metal. Apply Noxzema and wipe clean.
* Soothes sunburns & softens rough skin.
If youre not sure what Noxzema is, you can find the description over at Wikipedia: [1] Noxzema
Noxzema is a skin cleanser marketed by Procter & Gamble. Procter & Gamble acquired the brand in 1989 as part of the acquisition of Noxell Corporation, the Maryland-based company headed at that time by the grandson of the brands original inventor.
Since 1914, it has been sold in a small blue jar. Noxzema contains camphor, menthol, and eucalyptus, among other ingredients. Originally developed as a sunburn remedy, it is popular among women as a facial cleanser and make-up remover. It can also be used for cleaning chapped, sunburned, or otherwise irritated skin. Since the introduction of Noxzema, the brand name has appeared on shaving cream, razors, and skin-cleansing cloths.
The brands name is pronounced nock-ZEE-mÉ.

Dry & Chapped Hands Remedies
Posted By TipNut On October 29, 2007 @ 8:22 am In Beauty & Health | 2 Comments
Picture of Hands - Tipnut.comHomemade Chapped Balm Recipe:
Ingredients:
1 cup Cocoa Butter
1 cup Shea Butter
1/2 cup Jojoba Oil
1/4 cup Beeswax
Directions:
* If you have a large enough Pyrex measuring cup, place ingredients in that or just use a deep casserole dish of some kind. Loosely cover the top with foil (for steam and moisture to escape).
* Heat in oven at 180°F for two hours or until all ingredients are melted.
* Stir very well then pour into heat proof jars with mouths large enough for your hand to get in. Once cool, cover with lids and let set fully.
* Use as needed on dry or chapped skin (it doesnt take much).
If commercial hand creams and balms are too harsh for your sensitive skin (due to perfumes, additives, etc.), a couple quick & easy home remedies you could try:
* Crisco Shortening (Plain) - Rub into hands just like a lotion. Strange, but true.
* Mineral Oil (Baby Oil)
* Olive Oil - Rub into hands
* Vaseline - Coat hands then cover in cotton gloves (at bedtime)

35 Reusable Grocery Bags You Can Make - Free Patterns
Posted By TipNut On April 12, 2008 @ 7:57 am In Crochet, Green Living, Knitting, Popular Tips, Sewing | 11 Comments
Picture of Recycling Tag - Tipnut.comSure you can buy some trendy brand name shopping bags, but why not make your own bags for cheap (and even free!), they can be as chic and cool as you like (and original too)!
Heres a bunch of free patterns and tutorials to get you started, I have them sorted in three sections: Sewing, Knit, Crochet. Some patterns are pretty similar but there are subtle differences and features in each.
35 Reusable Grocery Bags - Free Tutorials & Patterns
Sewing Grocery Bags & Totes
1. [1] Fabric Grocery Sacks: Replicas of plastic grocery sacks made from vintage sheets and pillowcases (any fabric will do!). These also make cute lunch bags. Features a tie closure for a neat fit in your purse when not in use.
2. [2] MorsBags.com: Offers a downloadable pattern in pdf or word doc format (also an animated web tutorial). Simple tote style, easy to make.
3. [3] Cheap & Easy Fabric Produce Bags: A great alternative to the clear plastic bags available in the fruits & veggies aisles, these are made from repurposed sheer curtains (watch for them at garage sales), drawstring closure. Wash & reuse, lovely!
4. [4] Cheap & Easy Fabric Grocery Bags: By repurposing some old sheets, you can make a batch of these up for less than $2 each, and look how cute your groceries are in bags that are all the same pattern :). Simple design with sturdy webbing for the handles (or just whip up some fabric straps if you prefer).
5. [5] Pillowcase Tote - Sewing Tutorial: Heres a simple grocery tote made from an old pillowcase, including the handles.
6. [6] Sew a Durable, Reusable Grocery Bag: This tutorial suggests using canvas or denim but you can use whatever fabric you prefer. Boxed bottom with webbing or fabric strips for straps.
7. [7] Make a Reusable Grocery Bag: Simple reversible tote with boxed bottom, the handles are actually cut out (and reinforced) from the top of the bag.
8. [8] Green Re-usable Grocery Bags: Another simple fabric bag, this one has the handles cut out with the pattern rather than sewing on straps separately. Another good one for beginners to make.
9. [9] Make A Bird Seed Bag Grocery Tote: Heres an original idea, make a grocery tote out of big feed bags. If you have any woven plastic bags on hand that youre wondering what to do withhere ya go!
10. [10] How To Make A Canvas Bag: Cotton canvas shopping bag tutorial. Very simple design and sturdy!
11. [11] Wallet-Sized Fold-Up Re-Usable Shopping Bag: This bag folds into a wallet size that fits perfectly in your purse so youll always have one at your fingertips when needed. The bag is more detailed than most, but how nice it is!
12. [12] Reusable Groceries Bag With Comfy Bag Handles: Heres a pretty bag with its own bag cozy featuring a strap and metal clip. A bag within a bagvery cute!
13. [13] BurdaStyle Reusable Grocery Bag: This super-simple fabric bag is from BurdaStyle (free membership required to download pattern). No handles or straps to sew on and uses just 3/4 of a yard of fabric. Also features an inside pouch so the bag can tuck into itself
14. [14] Tutorial: Grocery Tote Bags: A simple fabric tote with attached straps, tutorial found on the Craftster forum.
15. [15] SewUseful San Fransisco Shopper: Roomy fabric tote with shoulder straps, folds down nicely to fit into a pocket or purse.
16. [16] TUTORIAL: Singlet Style Shopping Bag (like the plastic shopping bag): A Crafster forum tutorial, this fabric bag uses a regular plastic grocery bag as the template.
17. [17] A TOTE-ally Easy Way To Help The Earth: This fabric tote has straps that run from the bottom of the bag up (to reinforce), fully lined. Very sturdy construction, perfect for hauling canned goods.
18. [18] Make Your Own Shopping Bags: Simple design for a fabric bag, long rectangular shape with reinforced handles attached.
Knit Shopping Bag Patterns
1. [19] Knittys Everlasting Bagstopper: Heres a knit pattern using a mesh stitch but has a solid base for items to sit on). Nice, big & stretchy!
2. [20] Turkish Stitch String Bag: Heres a knit pattern for the mesh/string style of shopping bags with a shoulder strap. Pattern calls for a circular needle.
3. [21] Eco-Friendly Expandable Shopping Bag: This is a free knit pattern from Lion Brand Yarn. Its another mesh style, but its shallow in depth and has a solid knit top band and shoulder strap. If you get the registration page first (without seeing the pattern), try hitting refresh and scroll down the page to view the pattern.
4. [22] Susitna String Shopping Bag: This is another string shopping bag, knit pattern done on a knitting machine (not many of these patterns available!). Nice original design and pattern is available via a pdf download.
5. [23] Net Shopping Bag Pattern: A knit pattern for a mesh or net shopping bag, starts with double pointed needles then switches to circular. Nice length for the shoulder strap.
6. [24] Handknit Market Bag: Very nice knit bag using a lace pattern, great length for shoulder straps. This pattern is one of my favorites! Available in a pdf download.
7. [25] Knit Shopping Bag Project: Project uses worsted weight yarn and measures approx 24 wide x 20 long, excluding handle. Website is no longer available, this is found on the web archive.
8. [26] Knit Shopping Bags in Two Sizes: Sizes: Small Bag: 11 1/2 x 14 ; Large Bag: 13 1/2 x 14 , pattern uses worsted-weight yarn. Website is no longer available, pattern found on the web archive.
9. [27] FREE PATTERN Fantasy Naturale Market Bag: Knit bag pattern, size: Approx. 16 high X 12 diameter. Base uses straight needles, body of bag uses circular.
Crochet Shopping Bag Patterns
1. [28] Vintage Crochet Shopping Bag Pattern: Heres a pattern previously published on Tipnut, its the old style string bags that last forever and hold more than you can imagine. If you crochet, having one or two of these in your purse comes in super handy. Pattern available in a pdf download.
2. [29] Crochet Grocery Bag Pattern: Heres another crocheted bag, you dont have to use plain white crochet threadsee the bright colors used here.
3. [30] Lilys String Bag: Another crochet pattern for a mesh bag, this one has a bottom and handles that are solid. Free pattern, but for members only (its a quick signup).
4. [31] Handicrafter Cotton - Shopping Bag: This crochet pattern is from Bernat (free membership required to download pattern) and its different than the crochet string/mesh style patterns listed above, the style is more tote-like. Cute!
5. [32] Reduction Tote Bag: A crochet pattern in a mesh style with a solid bottom and straps. The bag also features a pocket on the front (great for holding keys and a wallet).
6. [33] Market Tote Bag Pattern: Available from the Lion Brand Yarn site, this crocheted bag is a nice long hobo style with wide shoulder straps. Body of bag is mainly made up of the double crochet stitch.
7. [34] Crochet Shopping Bag Pattern (pdf): This pattern is worked in one piece, has two straps and the body is mainly treble (triple) stitch.
8. [35] Hobo Style Bag: This bag is done in a mesh crochet and has long shoulder straps. Instructions are basic, but you should be able to work your way through this if youre at an intermediate level for crochet.
You can save a bunch of money making your homemade grocery bags by recycling fabric from old sheets, pillowcases, tablecloths and even old pairs of jeans (just sew strips of denim together and away you go).
[36] Furoshiki is another option to replace plastic bags, this is a neat technique from Japan.

Todays feature is a craft explosion from The Golden Thimble with a collection of [1] 527 Free Crafty Links, is this list a keeper? You bet!
These pages are designed to give you access to lots of links about crafts and projects. Before I was a full time quilter, I was a crafter of many things. I think that if you are creative, it can take you anywhere you want to go. Being a crafter led me to being a quilter. Theres no reason you cant do both! I just prefer quilting over crafting but around Christmas time and birthdays, its always good to know how to do both. I hope these links will give you some ideas and free projects for that special gift.
The page is updated regularly with all sorts of free projects and crafts to do, please check it out. If you like the list, make sure to register at the bottom of the page so youll get an email update each time new things are added.

Picture of Gifts In A Jar - Tipnut.comGifts in a jar typically include all the ingredients to make or bake something that are stored in jars (like mason jars or jam jars, etc.) and presented as gifts.
They can be cookie mixes, cake mixes, bath & beauty ingredients (like [1] bath salts and [2] foot soaks), hearty soup mixes, bread, buns, pastry ingredients, seasoning mixes, hot beverage recipes (like [3] Homemade Spiced Mocha Mix), any recipe that will keep well in a jar pretty much works.
Sometimes the ingredients are all layered in the jar and this can look quite appealing if theres some contrast between the colors, other times the recipe ingredients are fully mixed together before being placed in the jar.
After filling the jars, you can decorate the lids to look pretty and more festive. Make sure to include the list of ingredients and recipe directions for cooking or baking the mix or how to use the gift.
Heres a collection of resources that share hundreds of free recipes for these lovely homemade gifts. I also added a few treats at the bottom for how to decorate the jar lids.
