Home gardening offers ways to trim grocery costs [Survival Today, an on going thread]

Americans finding soaring food prices hard to stomach can battle back by growing their own food. [Click image for a larger version] Dean Fosdick Dean Fosdick

Home vegetable gardens appear to be booming as a result of the twin movements to eat local and pinch pennies.

At the Southeastern Flower Show in Atlanta this winter, D. Landreth Seed Co. of New Freedom, Pa., sold three to four times more seed packets than last year, says Barb Melera, president. "This is the first time I've ever heard people say, 'I can grow this more cheaply than I can buy it in the supermarket.' That's a 180-degree turn from the norm."

Roger Doiron, a gardener and fresh-food advocate from Scarborough, Maine, said he turned $85 worth of seeds into more than six months of vegetables for his family of five.

A year later, he says, the family still had "several quarts of tomato sauce, bags of mixed vegetables and ice-cube trays of pesto in the freezer; 20 heads of garlic, a five-gallon crock of sauerkraut, more homegrown hot-pepper sauce than one family could comfortably eat in a year and three sorts of squash, which we make into soups, stews and bread."

[snipped]

She compares the current period of market uncertainty with that of the early- to mid-20th century when the concept of victory gardens became popular.

"A lot of companies during the world wars and the Great Depression era encouraged vegetable gardening as a way of addressing layoffs, reduced wages and such," she says. "Some companies, like U.S. Steel, made gardens available at the workplace. Railroads provided easements they'd rent to employees and others for gardening."

[I think this is the first newsletter that I signed up for on the internet and I have enjoyed it for 10 years now...granny]

~ Welcome to Petwarmers ~
http://www.petwarmers.com

We think you’ll enjoy Lynn’s humorous story
today.
We’re sure all you cat lovers out there
have had a similar
experience. Let us hear from you.

LOVE IS WHERE YOU FIND IT
by Lynn Perrier

This is a love story.

The love story of my cat, Sophia. She was
truly smitten.
Unfortunately for Sophia, it is more like a Greek
tragedy.

I wasn’t much worried when Sophia, my
youngest cat, fell in love
because I am a responsible cat owner and she had
been fixed months
before her infatuation took hold.

Still, it’s sometimes hard when a mother has
to sit by and watch
her little four legged baby grow up. I guess it
happens to the best
of us. That was how I was feeling when I
realized Sophia, my little,
almost-grown 10 month old kitty, had fallen in
love for the first
time in her short life.

Now you should know that I am a strong
advocate of spaying and
neutering pets. There are too many unwanted
animals in this world
and the only way we will eventually conquer the
problem of homeless
and abandoned animals is to make sure we pet
owners do the
responsible thing. Still, being spayed didn’t
prevent Sophia from
falling head over heels.

It all began when I went out shopping and
came back with what
turned out to be her new love interest. I didn’t
expect Sophia’s
reaction to the newcomer. I set it down on the
floor when I walked
in and went about putting my other purchases
away.

When I came out, Sophia had already made
her presence known to
the object of her affection. As a matter of
fact, she was in a mad
embrace and completely oblivious to my presence.

She was rubbing it
all over while her four paws held on to it for
dear life. There was
no way anyone was going to separate them.

Sophia was purring so loud I could hear her
from the doorway.
She was in the throes of absolute and complete
ecstasy.

Now Sophia has a brother by the name of
Fellini. I have had
them both since they were two weeks old. Until
now, they were
inseparable and Fellini is very much Sophia’s big
brother, protector
and constant playmate. It now appeared this was
about to change.

Poor Fellini stood off to the side looking
totally dejected as
he watched this salacious scene between his
sister and the
interloper. Totally unimpressed and obviously
feeling left out, he
moved his attention to the container in which
this newcomer had
arrived. Just like any rejected male, he found
it necessary to show
his displeasure and proceeded to bat it around
the room with a fierce
resolve. It was apparent he held it responsible
for alienating
Sophia’s attention and was intent on
demonstrating his disapproval.

I guess he thought that trashing the container
would, in some small
way, alleviate his hurt feelings.
I watched with fascination as Sophia
continued in her attempt to
attract the attention of her new friend. She was
kissing it and
gazing at it with longing in her eyes as she held
on for dear life,
her paws wrapped around its neck like she would
never let go.

Unfortunately for Sophia, her new love
interest didn’t feel
quite the same. In spite of these amorous
overtures it just laid
there and refused to react. It didn’t respond to
Sophia at all.

Although Sophia bit it and rubbed is some more,
purring her heart
out, it just refused to return her affection. I
wondered how long it
would take her to realize the feeling wasn’t
mutual.

I wasn’t looking forward to watching her
inevitable rejection.

Visions of my first dance came to mind. The boy
I thought was the
coolest cat in school never asked me to dance.
He just ignored me
too. I understood how Sophia was feeling. I
could see the writing
was on the wall and I was afraid she was in for
the let down of her
young life.

Why?

Well, you see, her new love interest was my
newly purchased toilet brush!

I may have to buy another one just to make
sure she doesn’t
romance this one after it has already been used
for the purposes it
was meant for. Poor Sophia.

This story does have a happy ending,
however. I have no doubt
that as soon as Sophia realizes her affection is
not going to be
returned, Fellini will regain his position of
favoritism in her life
and the episode of Sophia’s unrequited love will
never be mentioned
again.

I can picture individuals living in urban or suburban areas growing red and green veggies, but not the kinds of grains which constitute real nourishment, i.e. protein and carbohydrates. How are individuals supposed to grow wheat, rice, and corn in enough quantity to help anything?

[This is an excellent list and source of supplies, they are fine people and even though I won’t be making soap in the future, I still like to keep up with this list.

Consider buying the Melt and Pour base for regular soap, I have, although not from this company, it works fine, to simply cut a bar off and go with it, you would melt it, if you wanted to add things, such as the essential oils, or coffee grounds to make it a good hand cleaning soap, or milk and oatmeal for a bath soap.
granny]

FSS List THIS THAT AND THE OTHER

Hope everyone is doing ok. It’s been a crazy
start to 2008 to say
the least. With the economy the way it is, the
primaries and
elections being absolutely bonkers, and just
everyday life being so
stressful I know I have a few more gray hairs
already.

Just a few things ..... first, has anyone tried
the silicone cup
cake molds from Target and other places? I am
thrilled to say the
least, with these little buggers. I got the
mini and the regular
size and they make absolutely wonderful soap
molds. Yesterday in
Target I found heart shaped, both regular and mini
sizes, and can’t
wait to play with them today.

Second, I’m working on fixing the buttons on the
site and thanks to
those of you who let me know when there’s a
problem, I do appreciate
it.

Last, I’ve been getting a lot of requests from
new members for
recipes, both cp and mp. How do you think a
page on the site would
go of listmember’s favorite recipes?

Please have a restful Sunday . I know a lot of
times these days it’s
hard to find the sunny side of things, but it
will get better. And
please everyone, as prices on everything go up,
make sure you
include the increase in your products. Everyone
knows that
transportation, shipping, supplies, all the
things that go into
your products has increased .....so should your
price reflect the
increase. Don’t make the mistake of giving your
things away. I see
this happen so often .

Holler with any questions you have and let me
know if you have pics I
can use and what you think of a recipe page, not
just for soaps but
for any of the favorites you might wish to share.

I am so glad you stopped and posted this idea, it might work.

Can you check your cooking instruction book and see if it says it will cook bread, pies, cookies?

I remember when they came out, they came with a bunch of small square enamel type pans that fit in it and it was to cook it all.

I don’t cook much for health reasons, I can’t be sure that I can finish what i start.

LOL, When I saw them at Walmart, I always looked at them, but had to walk away, as I did not need another toy.

You have good ideas, I do hope you will hang around and share more of them.

Thank you for this one.

Welcome!

I got my book...

the roaster should have a removable rack in it (comes with it)
you have to use the rack to set your baking pan or cookie sheet on.
I have a 22 qt model and I think it would hold a 9 x 13 cookies sheet or pan in it.

From the booklet (I question these times as it will be shorter)

yeast bread 400F for 40 to 45 min
sheet cake 350F for 40 to 45 min
fruit pie 425F for 45 to 50 min

one thing about it... it cooks faster than a large oven and you need to keep the lid on it as much as possible.

One thing I really like about it is the easy clean up and it does not dry the food out.

One of my favorite things to make in it is BBQ Ribs. I grill them first on the gas grill and then I wrap them in foil tightly and set them in the roaster to get fall off the bone tender.

My oven/stove burned up a few a weeks ago. (a major 1/4 power surge that happened overnight - power was only about 1/4 coming into the house - luckly it only killed my oven/stove.)

My hubby was whining about us not having a big oven to bake pizza in. I laughed and told him that I could live without a big oven since I hardly ever use the big oven once I bought this roaster oven 3 years ago. (it is still cooking great even after 3 years of regular use) It sits on my counter 100% of the time now.

I just love it!

(PS: a new/stove oven was delivered Friday. It wasn’t even plugged in for an hour before the hubby was making a pizza and popping it into the big oven.)

How are individuals supposed to grow wheat, rice, and corn in enough quantity to help anything?<<<<

If you start now and learn what will grow for you, then you will survive.

Rice, I have no knowledge of growing, I think it will take lots of water.

Corn does not grow for me in Northern Arizona, but the black Aztec corn will grow, Think I got those seeds at Nichols Garden Nursery in Oregon, the address is in post #107.

the named bean seeds will not grow here, but the “yard long or Asparagus” bean will.

Many of the common garden plants do not grow, it is too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter and the wind is always blowing.

I can grow greens, if I use the oriental seeds, non-hybrid types.

I would do as I did in the past, attach a lean to or built on solar greenhouse to my house and grow something the year around.

My husband built mine and it worked, the years are past for me to garden and the wind has ruined it, but I still grow in the beds, or did, until I could no longer go out doors.

Learn which wild foods you can eat, and how to prepare them.

These are wild food links:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/chat/1990507/posts?page=958#958

This is an excellent wild food link:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/chat/1990507/posts?page=1060#1060

I have bought weed seeds to plant, purslane and amaranth families and like them fine, plus they are good for you.

If you have to barter for part of the food, then that is the way it is, but know what you can eat off the land and grow, has always been my thought.

One could survive on what they find, not to say they would like it, and there are wild animals.

I do not have a perfect answer, there is not one, read through this thread and chase some of the links that we have posted.

It will take time to have a complete survival file here, this is only 2 weeks old and will keep growing, join in, share what you find with us, none of us know it all and many of us know about what has interested us in the past, but not all that we need to know today.

Welcome and do join us here, there may be someone on here that lives in your area.

Thank you, very much.

I looked at the link that you posted and it has many of the things that I like.

I will have to check with my brother and make sure that my wiring will support another electrical machine, my place is getting old and is not up to modern standards.

Thank you for having a workable idea, as the effort to move the stove out is more than I can cope with and I don’t cook enough to warrant the effort.

Laughing and thinking, “ you must not stop a man from having his pizza.”

LOL, man you are hooked.

Wish I could be there to watch you, make your first loaf.

And wait till you smell it baking.

When you get it, open the box, take out the instructions, and go to another room, read it, highlight it and you will be off and running.

Bet you learn to like ‘open face’ sandwiches on the bread that didn’t hold its shape for sandwiches and save the ends and pieces for a bread pudding and to make turkey stuffing.

Let your wife watch your waist, enjoy your bread.

Rosemary Hair Oil

2 T. dried rosemary
1/2 cup olive oil

Mix together the rosemary and olive oil. Heat gently in microwave or on
the stove top, but do not boil. I usually microwave it for about 2
minutes on high. Cool oil mixture completely and let sit for 2 to 3 days
to allow the oil to absorb all of the essential oil from the rosemary.
Filter out all the solids in the oil by pouring through a funnel lined
with a coffee filter. Pour into a clean bottle. Use by massaging a small
amount into your scalp after shampooing land before going to bed.
rosemary is believed to stimulate hair growth. Mixed with olive oil, it
makes a hair oil that can be massaged into the scalp. I see this hair oil
sold in almost every natural food store I go in, but it’s so easy and
so much less expensive to make at home.
Makes 4 oz.

Jalapeno Hair Tonic

2 small or 1 large jalapeno pepper
1/2 cup vodka
2 T. castor oil

Chop the jalapeno pepper into tiny pieces and place in a small ceramic
bowl. Pour the vodka over the peppers and allow to sit for several
days.Strain off the vodka and discard the peppers. Add the castor oil to
the pepper vodka and pour into a clean bottle. Shake before using.
Massage a small amount into your scalp before going to bed . I twill cause a
slight tingling sensation on your scalp. Makes 5 oz.
On a recent trip to Mexico, I complimented a beautiful woman working at
our hotel on the condition of her hair. It was very thick and shiny
and she shared with me this family recipe. Jalapeno peppers are used to
prevent hair loss by stimulating new hair growth. A small amount is
rubbed into the scalp by both men and women before retiring in the evening.
Make sure you use caution when using peppers, and wash your hands well
before touching our face or eyes. The juice can burn.

The Florida Department of Health is waiting on the results of lab
tests to determine what caused an outbreak of _Staphylococcus aureus_
infections among 12 people treated at a Tallahassee pain clinic.

Officials from the Leon County Health Department, who have been
tracking the cases, say they are not MRSA, the drug-resistant form of
the bacterium. Four other patients were hospitalized for observations
but were not confirmed as having staphylococcal infections, said Page
Jolly, spokesperson for the Leon County Health Department.

Infectious disease specialists who inspected the Pain Institute of
North Florida ruled out skin contact or unsanitary equipment as a
cause, said Dr. George Arcos, who runs the institute, and the main
focus of the investigation is a batch of medicine that was likely
contaminated. Lab results are expected to arrive early next week,
said Page Jolly.

A 64-year-old woman of Bainbridge, Georgia was one of those infected.
After getting an injection about 2 weeks ago at the Pain Institute of
North Florida, the woman said she felt some relief from her severe
back pain. But then she started experiencing severe pain on her left
side. She began hallucinating, and pretty soon she couldn’t recognize
her own children. She’d scream when touched because the pain was so
great.

Staff from the Pain Institute called her and her husband and told her
to get a blood culture and to report to the emergency room at Capital
Regional Medical Center, she said. She was diagnosed with a _S.
aureus_ infection and began treatment with antibiotics immediately,
her husband said. A week and a half after checking into the hospital
on 24 Mar 2008, she was feeling much better and asking to go home.

17 people were hospitalized for observation or treatment in
connection with the outbreak, and the Leon County Health Department
is asking anyone who received injections from the institute between 1
and 21 Mar 2008 to call (850) 606-8161.

Arcos said that based on the nature of the infections, the outbreak
was likely caused by contaminated medicine. “These injuries were at
the site where the medicine was deposited,” he said. “They’re deep in
the tissues.”

[The mechanism of contamination is not clear but could be the use of
a single dose medication vial for multiple patients. If each patient
who was infected received injections from separate vials, the single
dose vials could have been contaminated during production. If this is
the case, more cases should be found in more places. - Mod.LL]

I couldn't wait for my Radishes.

Photobucket
Fresh from the garden, early Radishes

Photobucket
Fresh into the chill glass, for crispness (with a touch of salt)

The weather here in VA is colder then usual, but Radishes grow almost anytime of year.

Beautiful.

Good for you, food from your own efforts.

Did you steam the tops?

I can taste the tops, save a few for the salad bowl.

I envy you.

I didn't steam the tops, I needed fuel for the compost.
The tops went into the compost pile, this round.

[History of Quilts Newsletter] April 2008

Dear Quilt History Enthusiasts,

I’ve had a lot of fun putting together a pattern and the history for
a red and green pomegranate quilt. It’s at
http://www.patternsfromhistory.com/civil_war/pomegranate.htm Even if
you aren’t thinking about making a pomegranate quilt you will enjoy
reading about them.

Other new items you will be interested in are a review of The
“Quilter’s Catalog” by Megan Fox
http://www.womenfolk.com/quilt_notes/quilters_catalog.htm and
information about the “Quilts and Human Rights Exhibition” at the
Michigan State University Museum
http://www.womenfolk.com/quilt_notes/human_rights.htm

Also Kimberly Wulfert did a little write up on quilt history making
it into textbooks and my part in that.

That’s it until next month.

How to Draw a Creature from The Deep!

On a recent trip by ship from Southampton, England to New York, my
husband, Joe, and I heard a lecture from the British Oceanographic Data
Centre, Deep Sea Research Studies in Oceanography on a most remarkable
fish, the Viper Fish. Viper fish live in the depths of the ocean and
have an amazing quality - they can light up in the dark! In my latest
How to Draw video, I’d love to show you how to draw the Viper Fish.
The new video is best viewed in a darkened room.
