Ancient Minoan Culture Comes To Life At The Onassis Cultural Center
Art Daily ^ | February 16, 2008 | unattributed

On March 13, 2008, more than 280 artifacts from the ancient land of Crete, most of which have never been shown outside of Greece, will be on view at the Onassis Cultural Center... through September 13, 2008... The exhibition will chronologically map in 11 thematic sections covering the establishment and great achievements of the Minoan culture... Information gathered from studies of the Early, Middle, and Late Minoan periods -- also referred to as the Prepalatial, Protopalatial, Neopalatial and Postpalatial periods -- is derived mostly from objects excavated from the island's burial grounds and settlements... gold jewelry... inscribed clay tablets... ceremonial vessels... votive figures of clay... the Minoans experienced a period of active trade with the other civilizations around the Mediterranean basin and maintained control over the sea routes. Exports consisted of timber, foodstuffs, cloth, and olive oil, while Cretans imported tin, copper, silver, emery, fine stones, and some manufactured objects. For their basic needs, however, the Minoans were self-sufficient... tablets in Linear B script, deciphered in the 1950s by M. Ventris and J. Chadwick. Although borrowed by the Linear A, the symbols of this script render an early form of the Greek language, spoken by the Myceneans that had already reached Crete... Lavishly decorated swords and a rare Boar's Tusk Helmet such as those displayed in the Warriors and Weaponry section, along with other precious metals and jewelry, are evidence that a proud and ostentatious military class developed in Crete after the appearance of the Mycenaeans...

So, you want to ban boxing?
by Terry Dooley
Feb 28th 2008
One of our earliest existing artworks is a painting of Minoan boys in a boxing pose; they stand in this combat pose without a PC social commentary attached. In Ancient Greece - the dawn of our Western civilisation - Pindar wrote poems about boxing, young boys boxing as well, in his 'Pythian Odes'. Socrates spoke about boxing when philosophising, the philosophers of the day spent their time in Palaestrae's, gymnasiums where they would watch the athletes train. If we proudly take from our Greek heritage democracy, philosophy, tragedy, poetry, sculpture (the study of human form, one aspect of boxing as shown by Hellenistic boxer sculptures from 100BC) and history (with Herodotus the father of historians) then why leave boxing behind? Especially as it was one of the most admired pursuits of that time. It has also remained strong throughout the ages, constantly engaging minds from all walks of life.

Minoans...maintained control over the sea routes.

One often hears that, but it's never explained or demonstrated.

Boxing lasted for thousands of years until the advent of Don King saw its final flowering and decline.

In every movie I’ve ever seen on the subject of ancient things coming back to life, it has never went well.

As a young adolescent I developed an intense interest in the Minoan civilization - when I discovered it was the fashion for the women to bare their breasts.
