Ha! No Windows 7 in 2009
Tue Jan 29, 2008 11:25AM EST
Sorry folks, but the news seemed a little too good to be true and the celebrations were a bit premature: Windows 7, Microsoft's follow-up to the overwhelmingly hated Windows Vista, probably won't arrive in 2009 as was previously rumored.
Says Microsoft: Windows 7 has not even begun development, and when it does, it will take three years to finish. The Inquirer is pegging a real release date at 2011... at the earliest. (Which is especially sad, since 2010 was the formerly rumored release date.)
Of course, that would be more in line with Microsoft's more recent, glacial development cycles (remember, it took six years to ship Vista after XP came out).
So what might Microsoft do for the rest of the decade? Some are guessing that 2009 might indeed bring a major OS update, but in the form of a biggish update to Vista. Ed Bott predicts a new IE, a toned-down User Account Control, and more media features for the OS. In other words: Windows Vista Service Pack 2.
As a side note, there's also the possiblity that neither scenario is true: All of these rumors are based on leaked roadmaps and at least one "official statement" about Windows 7, but in my years of dealing with the company, it has categorically chosen to refuse comment on future products, especially on something as distant and critical as a new operating system. The latest news is all based on this blog post at WinVistaClub, and you'll have to judge its veracity for yourself. That said, can I believe it will take five or six years to ship a new version of Windows? You bet.
Mac OSX Leopard has Vista (and XP) blown out of the water. Great system!
I like that line.
Vista is pretty and has some great features, but XP is much faster than Vista on my computer. I get the feeling that the "increased security" provided was for Microsoft's benefit more than the users.
My suggestion to MS: Focus on the consumer, not yourselves.

Too bad you can’t run it on affordable hardware. The cost of a MAC is almost double that of an equivalently endowed PC.
I have 11 children, 9 of whom are still at home. We have 7 PCs and three laptops.
The solution?
Linux!
Linux will run on just about anything.
If you like pretty, try Linux Mint.
All the pretty of Vista without the baggage!
IMHO, one the fundamentals of word processing, spreadsheets, relational databases, gaming, graphics, then networking, and internet connectivity, and user interface issues ahve been mastered, the financial wave powering the computer industry has hit the beach.
There will now be continuing market for maintenance of those basics, with a few utilities added here and there, but the next big advance, IMHO, isn’t as readily apparant. Maybe neurological interfacing, but we start stepping into dangerous uncharted waters in that region which might lead to a whirlpool of technology, than a helpful wave of power.
I appreciate that information.
I'm not a software partisan- I really don't care if my boxes are run by the Wizards of Renton, the Gnomes of Zurich, or DOS 3.3, I just want them to do certain things without hassle-- but as my Win2000 gets longer in the tooth, and I keep hearing mostly bad things about Vista, I'm considering Linux.
Like you, we have a number of machines, of varying age & hardware, and it would be nice to keep them set up along similar lines.
I think what we’ll see in Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (which will likely come out in 2009) is a number of changes in the core OS code to reduce the “footprint” of the OS itself without changing the functionality. After all, Windows XP Service Pack 2 was more than just bug fixes and security updates—it also changed some OS core code to improve stability.
Example, please.
If true, that sucks. I was hoping to skip Vista altogether and go straight from XP to Win7. Although it might be worth it if MS starts from scratch - design an all-new OS from the ground up, with backwards compatibility only via virtualization.
Thus, they are trying to diversify by buying Yahoo.
How does Linux Mint compare to Kubuntu (I know Mint is derived from Ubuntu)?
Losing a little less than 2% isnt bad, considering they still command roughly 90% of the world market.Plus quite a few of the intel mac’s contain a version of a Windows OS, MS isnt close to being in trouble.
Am I the only user with three computers installed with Vista who loves it? I’ve had not a single lock-up in three months and it works perfectly. What’s not to like? What’s the beef?
I know two of the actual beta testers and I respect their judgment. I haven’t seen anything here except a bunch of Microsoft bashing but nothing that shows any particular problems. Why haven’t I experienced these alleged problems?
What drove this 20-year+ M$ user off the cliff was when M$ started selling its own anti-viral software, clunkily named Windows Live OneCare.
Think about that for a second.
"We make the finest operating system on Earth -- and for a small additional fee, we'll help you secure it."
I installed Vista on my parent’s computer; it locks up about once a week. There’s a card game they like that works perfectly on XP but Vista can’t “deal” with.
I installed Vista on my computer and had a trade-off: speed for beauty and better file presentations. I prefer the speed.
Idea: MS could make a system that would allow super-speed for home work, and a partition for internet activity that has all the security features.
Could anybody do that?
Its called, MSD-Microsoft derangement syndrome. I Myslef love Vista, in fact most of the people who claim to have problems usually dont.
Vista seems slower than XP to me.
So to you Vista it is as fast and reliable as XP?
What kind of computer do you have , RAM, processors etc?
