Dog back home after seven years
BBC ^ | 15 November 2007 | staff reporter

A dog has been reunited with its owner after seven years.

Lyn O'Byrne, from Brighouse, West Yorks, had her Lurcher, Rhia, stolen from the veterinary practice where she worked in Kent in January 2001.

Last week she received a call from the Lost Dogs and Cats Line at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home to say they had a dog registered to her address.

Ms O'Bryne was traced through a microchip inserted into the scruff of the dog's neck containing her details.

'Happy ending'

She said: "When I received the call I didn't twig why The Lost Dogs & Cats Line were calling me. I thought it might be something to do with my work.

"When they said they had a dog at Battersea called Rhia, registered to my name and address I literally collapsed on the floor."

She travelled to the home and was reunited with Rhia, who she said was in good health apart from appearing a little underweight and having a few additional cuts and bruises.

Scott Craddock, from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, said: "So far this year Battersea's Lost Dogs and Cats Line has reunited over 2,100 lost dogs and cats with their owners.

"We are hoping Lyn's happy ending encourages more people to get their pet microchipped and update their details if they move."

Since when is "twig" a verb?

Since at least the 1800's. You haven't twigged to British slang yet?

I did know it was raining cats and dogs, because I stepped in a poodle. I saw this very hungry dog. Why did I know it was hungry? Because I saw it chow down. I hope you do not believe I am barking up the wrong tree.

My Husky is microchipped. Which is a good thing, considering that he can leap our 5-foot fence easily. He is such a loving, affectionate dog, and yet he scares people who are afraid of dogs. If he sees you, he will run toward you with a big smile, wanting to sniff you and be petted by you, completely trusting that all humans are good. Yet I have neighbors who see a big, wolflike dog running toward them as a threat. How I wish we were all on the same page.

My Husky has taught me quite a few things. He has taught me how to stop and listen, how to pounce-bounce to dislodge a cagey rodent, how to greet a wary possible-friend, and how to enjoy life no matter what.

I have tried to teach him about cars and trucks. He replies, "what cars and trucks?". He is oblivious to the mechanized behemoths all around him, and completely tuned in to the tiny creatures all around him. As it should be. But unfortunately this worldview makes the leash necessary.

Your Husky has taught you the Power of Now: "The playfulness and joy of a dog, its unconditional love and readiness to celebrate life at any moment often contrast sharply with the inner state of the dog's owner - depressed, anxious, burdened by problems, lost in thought, not present in the only place and only time there is: Here and Now. One wonders: living with this person, how does the dog manage to remain so sane, so joyous?"

To be still, to just look and just listen to your Husky will bring you to a place of stillness without thought ... the essence of wisdom. That is why, I think we love our dogs so. ;-D

On this side of the pond, another microchip story about a feline:

Cat Apparently Hitches From N.J. to Ga.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.

Heathcliff the cat somehow hitched a nearly 800-mile ride from New Jersey to Georgia most likely on a moving van, authorities said.

The orange and white shorthair was reported missing Oct. 24 from Sicklerville, N.J. The animal was identified Nov. 9 at an animal shelter in Lawrenceville where a resident took the cat after trapping him.

D. Mosier, an animal control officer, scanned Heathcliff for a microchip, as she does with all animals that show up at the Gwinnett Animal Welfare and Enforcement Center. The microchip led to information that the kitty was reported missing.

A volunteer rescue group shuttled the cat back to its owner Wednesday.

Last week, a Lawrenceville woman provided what might be the answer to how the cat ended up in the Atlanta suburb. The woman called Mosier and told her she helped her son move out of a New Jersey apartment shortly before the cat turned up in Georgia.

Thanks for your reply. Yes dogs do have the ability to put us back into the here and now. It's so easy to get wrapped up in our problems and miss everything.

Microchip? Must be cheaper than just gettin’ a new cat? ;’) Cats sleeping 16 hours a day probably makes trips like that more commonplace than we usually know. Lost your cat? In another state. “Your kitty didn’t go to a big farm out in the country, er, actually, maybe he did...”

Aww...

Last night we found a dog running around loose in the neighborhood. He had a tag w/ the owners phone number. The last two digits were scratched up so we had to try several different numbers.

We were able to locate the owner and he claimed his pooch. A nice, well behaved dog, something akin to Toto, but a bit larger. The dog has a history of digging under the fence and escaping.

Microchip or it can become a case of mistaken identity ...

You’re a great-great person to take the time to find the dog’s owner. And less traumatic for the dog ... rather than calling animal control to solve the problem.

Our kindly local UPS driver used to deliver our wandering dogs home, when he found them across town. Small towns .. gotta love ‘em. ;-D

If you find yourself in a place of talk and action without thought, leave. That is the essence of Democrats.

Can't blame the democrats/socialists for everything. LOL... Stillness is the only thing in this world that has no form. But then, it is not really a thing, and it is not of this world.

But what is wisdom and where is it to be found? Wisdom comes with the ability to be still. Just look and just listen. No more is needed. Being still, looking, and listening activates the non-conceptual intelligence within you. Let stillness direct your words and actions. You can do that even with blithering democrats filling your ears with lies.
