The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Actually there’s a good series of technical books on writing and at least one of them is mystery novel mechanics. I remember looking at it in B&N one time. Swing by the local bookstore on the way home and check out their fiction writing section - it might be just what you need.

Sure hope you decide to continue writing your story, just keep on pounding the keys, we’d like to know how it turns out.

Thanks. I know the ending. It's just all that in-betweenness that's got me bogged down.

This morning I've been to the recycling center (old paint), Goodwill, the Dollar Store (fireplace candles) and DMV. DMV is still being a pain in the butt. They told me I could get the salvage certificate for Jr's car for $10. That's true. What they didn't tell me is that DMV has to inspect it. And that costs $125. We're still under the amount insurance paid, but the fact that it took two phone calls and two trips to DMV to figure that out really pi$$e$ me off.

Getting ready to pull the Christmas extravaganza out of ~the attic~. Then it's back to the leaves.

Generally bail is used to ensure that the arrestee will return for trial. It’s enough money to make sure they don’t want to lose it. Or that whoever is loaning them the money will not let them run.

Bail can be denied and the person held in jail if the judge deems them a flight risk. If the judge can be persuaded that they’re going to run off nomatter how big the bail is... they can be kept in jail.

I’m sure the timing of trials varies greatly, but it’s safe to assume that a trial may be at least several months after an arrest.

Holidays have turned into passive-aggressive warfare with my brother's family. His wife is the culprit and he's a little lilly-livered about it all. I'm the ogre of an aunt who never visits. But when I do visit, it is wildly uncomfortable. Everything is on their terms, on their schedule, and on their calendar. Our plans don't matter. If we don't arrange our plans for them, well, that just proves how mean we are. LOL

The SIL always has to make sure her mother is there, I guess as a chaperone, I don't know. They belong to a small, very judgmental denomination and I always feel like they're checking me over over horns, hooves, and a tail. I can never say anything right. Nothing I do is correct. And somehow I make her cry?? Her mother is a man-hater and always has snarky things to say about how I center my life around my husband. Yeah, so I cook the man dinner... The two of them are extremely bossy and overly full of themselves. They suck the fun out of any occasion.

Ah, family.

I cain't wait for Christmas. (Did I mention I'm on strike this year?)

and get something at Denny’s.

Do Cracker Barrel instead. Big'ol and I did that for years before we had family move to the area.

Hm...what I’m writing isn’t strictly a mystery (since everything is exposed at once, and then we have to watch the character try to figure it out...), but that sounds useful. Any idea of the title?

Heh...ain't that always the way?

I have a last scene in mind...might just write it one of these days so I have a clear goal post to aim for.

Well, since you know they always go to the in-laws, just plan to have dinner with Hair and the gang, since that's all set up, and don't worry about it for this holiday! You could still call him, and wish him Happy Thanksgiving, telling him that you wanted to be sure and catch him, since you were planning on doing Turkey Day with friends!

Then, you can just enjoy your day tomorrow, and save your worrying for Christmas!

Cool...good info!

Does anyone have to vouch for the person if they’re able to get bail? And when they’ve been bailed out, do they just have to stay in the general area? Can they live at home and all?

I’m thinkin’ it likely would interfere with one’s job...ungh. I’m worrying about little details that don’t matter, like the house. If someone ends up convicted, what happens to their stuff?

Rhetorical questions — I don’t expect you to answer. And really, most details like that are glossed over in a book. The reader doesn’t ask themselves who got the guy’s car — in general, anyhow.

Heh, you know, that’s the one thing I’ve really enjoyed about living so far away for so long. We never had holiday issues because everyone knew we’d never be there anyway. ;o)

It’s the “Howdunit” series. This link on amazon is to what seems to be a “greatest hits of the Howdunit series” compilation

Usually all the court cares about is that the bail money is turned over and the rest is up to the defendant. I don’t think there’s usually anybody that has to vouch for them or take responsibility for them. Judges might have a travel restriction (like don’t leave the country) but most times not, I think. As long as you return for trial, most of the time I don’t think they care what you do in the mean time.

So yes, they can work and live more or less normally. Maybe there’s additional no-contact orders and whatnot.

What happens to somebody’s stuff is their problem. The court isn’t going to care.

Yah...that part I know. But I'm still thinking about it, from the arrested person's perspective. If they end up in jail for life (or for years, anyhow), they'd want to sell their house and things, but how do you do that from jail? With the help of attorneys, I guess. Or someone with a power of attorney. Assuming you can find someone to act on your behalf.

Like I said, for story purposes, it really doesn't matter. No one wonders about that stuff. But as the writer, I do. ;-)

I don’t really know the exact end of mine. But with 6 or 8 years of kicking the idea around I have the in between down fairly well. And it keeps growing. Most of the story was suppose to take place off the earth and I still am thousands or words from them being able to leave.

Hm...looks good.

Would it be in really, really poor taste to ask family for various books from the series for Christmas? ;-)

“Hey, Dad...for Christmas I want ‘Body Trauma: A Writer’s Guide to Wounds and Injuries’, OK?”

I am not sure Sean should have let that alien scientist keep the submachine gun. Even with the safety briefing...

Pointing to the various parts of the MP-5 he said. “Muzzle, only point it at things you want to put holes in. Trigger, only touch it when the muzzle is pointed at something you want to put holes in. At that time squeeze it with your index finger. This finger here. This is the Magazine; it holds the projectiles. It is removable. Magazine release, only use it to make the magazine fall out. Bolt, if you have to reload, press the magazine release, put in a full magazine, and then pull this all the way back here and the left go of it. This is the selector switch. In this position it will fire one projectile when you pull the trigger. In this position it will keep firing for as long as your finger is pulling the trigger back or until you run out of projectiles. In this position it will not allow the trigger to be pulled. Don’t bother with that one.” He reached down to the body and opened pouches on the dead man’s vest. “Here are two full magazines. Do you have pockets them put them in? Good. Oh, and never point the muzzle at anyone you don’t want to put holes in. It is considered very rude in this planet. Ok, let’s go.”
