A (quasi-official) Weekend Singles thread
Teh Intarweb; Free Republic | 20 April 2007 | Singles Thread Denizens 8^)

This week's (unofficial) topic: Open-Line Weekend. Anything that is FR-safe (for News and Chat) is fair game.

Only thing is: let's not get at each other--this is (well, I hope it is), a place to put politics, issues, etc. aside...

That said, let the games begin...

So, which is it going to be? Russell or Calvin Johnson?

Let's not forget a vital date in American history, the anniversary of which passed a couple of days ago.

Unfortunately, Americans with very short memories and/or who failed to learn history will only remember April 19th as the anniversaries of Waco and OKC, and the day before the Columbine anniversary. But it's also the anniversary of the beginning of the American Revolution.

On April 19th, 1775, Captain Parker and his 75 member militia company gathered in the early morning on Lexington Green to face the 600-800 British redcoats on their way to seize powder stocks said to be in Concord. Parker told his men to fire only if fired upon, but if the British meant to have a war, "then by God, let it start here". In the resulting firefight, eight members of the Lexington company were killed, and the British marched on to Concord.

When they got there, most of the armaments had been moved, the townpeople having been alerted the night before by Richard Dawes (not by Paul Revere, who had been captured by the British that morning). The redcoats set fire to what was left, then turned to march back to Boston.

The warnings issued by Revere, Dawes, and Dr. Richard Prescott, and the smoke from the fires in Concord alerted militas and citizens in surrounding villages and farms. They turned out in the woods lining the road to Boston, and attacked the British column, killing roughly 75 and wounding another roughly 175. The American patriots lost roughly the same amount dead, and another couple of dozen wounded. Thus began the American Revolution, on April 19th, 1775.

Here in Boise, I was fortunate enough to have witnessed Gov. Butch Otter sign a proclamation declaring April 19th to be Patriots' Day in Idaho. My adopted home state joins only nine others in officially recognizing this vital day in our history, a day that has been overshadowed by evil deeds committed on that same date. I urge everyone to write their state legislators and governors, asking them to recognize April 19th for what it is, and to restore some of the honor of that day.

This might not be a bad idea, since my very own and beloved Raiders are on the clock as we speak. :)

Can we put you down for next weekend? I'm sure that you'd do fine.

Sharing our angst over a George burger and a beer at the Hokie House would do much to help, I think...or a bowl of really hot chili and a basket of curly fries and a pitcher at the London Underground. Too bad I'm unable to go there any time soon.

Strangely enough, I don't remember those places from being there in the early and mid eighties. I remember Mike's bar, but I rarely went because I was in the church groups back then. I remember people talking about a place called "Our Daily Bread," but I don't remember eating there. I remember Gilley's when it was just an ice cream place.

I was there in December of 2005. A friend was in Blacksburg during that time, and I went up during Christmas week to see him. We walked all over the campus. I was amazed at the changes. I hadn't been there since the early 90's.

Well, with the idiocy I've seen the last couple of days at work, this pretty much sums it up...

Sorry for preaching, but I've made it something of a personal quest to try to get April 19th remembered for the greatness it stands for, not he evil committed by a few scumbags. Thanks for bearing with me.

As quests go, yours is very worthy. I don't know whether the Columbine or Virginia Tech killings were related to other events of the third week of April. OKC happened on that day because the Waco tragedy had happened on the same day. The Waco tragedy happened because we had an idiot in the White House. Like you, I would love to see our attention focused on events in history where we took positive steps to make things better instead of tragedies.

Bill. I am sorry about the loses at VT for so many reasons & sorry that this affected you w/being your alma mater.

I graduated from Kent State & had already left when the National Guard shootings killed the 4 students & injured many others. I felt a profound sense of pain. Was living out of the country & the news was non existent in Central America .. and then there was the language barrier for the little bit that might come on. I spoke spanish but not well enough to follow all.

Thanks for volunteering for the weeks you did. and you surely can do those or whatever. I am not sure that will carry us through enough for me to continue, I am not sure about snugs. I will keep the ping list up for those who want to use it for a few weeks & will then be eliminating some of the things from the server. People can use any method they wish to keep the list. I felt one central place on a server for all to access was the easiest/best way. One person keeping it updated is also the easiest.

I may in the summer start a midddle age(45 +/-) up singles thread depending if my life gets less complicated. i have had many contacts from people interested in this type of thread.

THere are a lot of things to occupy peoples time & attention & we all need to go where we want to go & never feel obligated to do things we dont’want to do. At FR there are hundereds of threads daily to post at and with elections & so many hot stories, it will increase.

Folks not wanting to participate in hosting is okay & I am not upset but just understand that sometimes things just play out & we need to let them evolve elsewhere, die a gentle death or rejuvenate if wanted.

I recall when I started a singles group in NC in the early 80s (I was married but saw the need for it) . DId excessive research & overwhelming read that one of the biggest obstacles in Singles groups is the lack of commitment & reliability for those that are single. I found that to be true then & to a degree now. But the small group that started with 10 in 1980, had 125 in 90 when I left the area & now has a membership of 0ver 300 & a multitude of activities, discussion groups, trip & opportunities in about every interest area imaginable. THey have a lots of good leaders & lots of couples find each other there & leave the singles group when they marry

I believe threads such as these serve a useful purpose for friendship & helping each other along the way. Those of you who wish to do threads can do so. When I decided to take the reins to add structure the threads were hit/miss. There were power struggles as to who was in charge. Sometimes there was a thread & sometimes there wasn;t. About 5 pings lists were maintained & they were all different

I have learned in life & the business world that for things to be successful it takes team work & it takes commitment..I stated when I started it would be for 6 months & I have well exceeded that trying to get folks involved & make a good place for folks to hang out.

Yikes, I lost tract of time. Must feed mom, pets & get dressed to leave for church in about 15 minutes.

I am afraid at present with weekend’s all over the place with dad in hospital I cannot commit to posting a thread but as soon as he is home I will jump back in.

At present a dear friend has invited me to his home for at least one evening each weekend for some company so this has meant that I am out of the picture at present.

Thanks for jumping in

Okay, let’s do it. I’m actually at work from 4p-midnight (Mountain time) so if either you or Dolly would be so kind as to send me all the specifics and HTML coding for the thread by Friday afternoon at 4p MDT, that would rock!

Thanks.
