Demerol Addiction
Demerol, an opium derivative, is a narcotic analgesic with effects similar to morphine. It is a widely prescribed drug and an effective painkiller. Demerol can increase the effects of other sedatives. In combination with pain relievers, alcohol, or antihistamines, it may cause drowsiness and lethargy. Moreover, when combined with other depressants, Demerol can lower the respiration rate. This drug can be fatal in very high doses. People may develop dependency on prolonged use of the drug.
Demerol can cause addiction and withdrawal symptoms and many other harmful effects in an unborn baby. It may also cause addiction and withdrawal symptoms in a nursing infant.
Symptoms of Demerol Addiction
Physical and psychological dependence to the substance and withdrawal effects associated with the discontinuance of it are the main symptoms of Demerol addiction. Some people may develop an allergic reaction breathing and throat problems and swelling of the lips. A constant drug craving is common among Demerol addicts.
Severe anxiety, insomnia, muscle spasms, and shivering are some other symptoms of Demerol addiction. Addicts may begin showing withdrawal symptoms four to five hours after the last dose of the drug. This frustration may last 7 to 10 days.
