The Hobbit Hole XXXIII - And the brook that leaps from hill to plain...

Posted on 03/08/2007 2:40:27 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Well, dangit. I was really hoping it’d at least warm to 60. But it hasn’t, and now the wind is picking up.

I’m very dissatisfied with this weekend’s weather. :-\

I think it feels pretty good out there mowing... the breeze keeps it from being hot.

Looks like my velcro tape plan may work. I’ve hung a curtain (an old tablecloth) on the southwest side of thesunroom. With half the sunroom doors open, it reads 90 degrees. Weather Underground has the temperature at 88.

Good idea!! Anything that can block that vicious sun from the south and west is a help. That portion of our backyard which was shaded by the big hackberry is intolerable in the late afternoon/early evening when the sun is in the west (sigh).

Abrupt breezes *don’t* feel so good when you’re on a bike broadside to the wind, trying not to get pushed into traffic.

But I did ride to work and back. Took a different way. More road, but it’s a road through mostly housing complexes and there’s a big bike lane - sometimes almost as wide as the car lane. It’s about a mile and a half shorter. Does require crossing interstate exits, though - on Pacific.

And the crosswinds were reallllly messing with me on the way back. I almost got off and walked a few times.

Heh...also felt like I needed to stop and eat something or get something sugary when I was coming back.

It was about then that I realized I’d had “Running on Empty” stuck in my head for a few miles. Maybe my brain trying frantically to signal me.

I heard you out there mowing.

Our mower may be broken... again. It ran out of gas... but after filling it, we couldn’t get it started. Letting it cool off and think.

Feel free to borrow mine if you need to.

Whew...now I’m hot. But the lawn is about as mowed as it ever gets. The front by where I park the van is not really lawn. :-\ Makes it frustrating to mow.

BTW....lawnmowers think?

Heh...mine is marked “Do not use around pets or others”.

I’ll be careful of Benry while mowing.

It gets to be 100 in there when it gets in the upper 80’s-90’s whether I open all the sliding doors and close the room off, or close all the sliding doors and open the room to the AC. But I’ll have to do better than a tablecloth if I want to curtain off that whole side. Can’t have things mis-matched, ya know.

BTW....lawnmowers think?

I'm giving it a chance to, anyway.

I wonder how the others are supposed to mow?

Thanks for the offer. If ours doesn't decide to start, we will have to take you up on that... our lawn needs mowed every 3-4 days now :~)

I don’t think others mow.

Maybe the black swirly thing does it for ‘em.

Ungh...I forgot cat food while I was out, and though there’s still some in their bowl, it doesn’t fit Tam’s idea of proper food. He’s loudly lecturing me. Guess I gotta get cleaned up and head back to *town*. At least the pet store should be open, though I missed the feed store again, I’d guess.

Indeed!

Yes, the story of Captain Healy and the Cutter Bear is indeed pretty much number one among legends in the CG. That history firgures prominently in boot camp as part of the essential lore that everybody must know.

There will always be a CGC Bear in commission, and as of the mid eighties (perhaps before) also a CGC Healy.

Cool stuff. Thanks for the tell.

Heh, I know that yowl well!

The last of our houseguests left a couple hours ago. We had two stay over the past two nights, and something like 18 people at our cookout last night. It went really well, except for the poor guy who was deathly allergic to chicken and arrived after we’d started cooking chicken on the grill. Heh.

Good party.

I spent the afternoon in the basement and now have four boxes of stuff ready to go to the Thrift Shop. That will give me more room to move around and gather other stuff. I’d love to finish the basement packing before I head down South on the 27th, for my Girl Cousin reunion. I’m also going to show Clare how to do the stripping and sanding of the cabinet doors so we can start priming and painting them when I come back.

We had 70 of these in the back of bigred...24 of them mine and the rest were a friends. We butchered them on Thursday and ate one yesterday. They cost about $8.50 a bird to raise. Each one was between 5-8 lbs. dressed out. The family down the road that butchered them with us gets $2 a pound when she sells hers.

For father's day, we went to a friends and thegirl got to ride a Paso Fino.

The boys played on a slip and slide. It was a beautiful day. I am thankful for my father, the father of my children, and the best Father of all. G'nad sang in church today...I was all fahklempt. He sang "Give Me Jesus" as arranged by Fernando Ortega...absolutely beautiful!
