She had gone to Target with her brother and sister-in-law to buy a DVD player for their new house, and had decided to go off on her own. She was looking over women's blouses when a young girl brushed past her. The girl angrily demanded an apology. The woman was taken aback and refused, according to her account, and tried to turn her attention back to the rack of clothes.

Sanchez said some store employees were present when the fight began and didn't try to intervene.
"They didn't do nothing, nothing whatsoever," Sanchez said. "The manager didn't respond when I told her about it. She said, 'We told our employees not to get involved so they won't get hurt.' "
Employees at the store declined to comment, though a spokesman for the franchise released a statement.

The same question for you. If instead of four girls (3 of them juveniles) it was four big, nasty, angry gangbangers from South Central, would you still jump in?
If instead of four big, nasty, angry gangbangers from South Central, it was two little four year olds from Sacramento, would you still stay back?
See, two can play games with hyperbole.
I think we all would use our common sense to decide what we could do to help. For the record, help is stopping the beating. First of all, I would be likely to take greater risks to intervene if a female is being beaten. In this situation, physically putting yourself between the victim and the aggressors could stop the attack or at least buy time. But there might be a shot to take down more than one attacker at a time. Especially if you see others willing to help. I cant imagine seeing something like this and not thinking about my mom or my wife.
I would like to answer your earlier question about the four gangbangers. If its obvious that I alone could not physically stop the attack then your method of getting security and noting details is the only help that can be offered. But I would rather taking the beating myself than live with the images of a woman being abused like that.
Not too long ago, a single man waded into a huge pack of animals who were beating the holy hell out of three girls in Long Branch. By your reasoning, he was selfish and insane and acted only so that he could pat himself on the back.
Had you been witness to that scene instead of him, those girls may well have died. So, while I congratulate you on your cool logic, I can't help but think we need more insane idiots like him in the world.
Probably not, unless the employee was specifically employed to provide security, and even then there would be strict limits on what that employee could actually do. I understand that this area is something of a legal minefield. I was just pointing out that the Target corporate statement was ridiculous. A more accurate statement would be, "It is not our policy to protect our patrons from physical assault."
Fear of lawsuits.
LOL! I think that's understood.
I can not stop all injustice in the world. But when it happens in front of me it becomes my obligation as a member of a civil society to try to stop it.
I find it very sad that others do not. They are so bound by fear of what might happen that they voluntarily relinquish their duty as free citizens.
And yeah, as a five foot female with glasses and a limp I am probably going to get the tar kicked out of me. So be it. It wouldn't be the first time.
If anynody touched the girls they would be sued. Now the victim has a case against the Store and the parents of her assailants.
No.
I think she could. The store has a duty to protect the customer.
You've got Moxie. I like that.
I'd have 'intervened' as well. With relish.
The store has no duty to protect anyone against criminal action, whatsoever. Calling 911 is the end of their duty.
It does not looks like they did call 911.
I think I'm offended because someone would put me in a DVG. We haven't even heard this woman speak yet, so who's to say what her mindset is about all of this. What would you do if you were victimized in a business establishment and no one in that establishment came to your aid? I guess you'd chalk it up to experience?
They did. I'm sure the loss control people called right away. from the article.
"Police arrested the four suspects in the beating at South Bay Shopping Center shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday. They charged the three oldest -- ages 14, 16, and 20 -- with assault and battery and the 10-year-old with the more serious crime of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, because she allegedly kicked the woman."
********
""Sanchez said. "The manager didn't respond when I told her about it. She said,..."
All this means is Sanchez wasn't satisfied with what they said. In particular, she focused on this comment from the manager, "We told our employees not to get involved so they won't get hurt."
Here's the full context:
" "They didn't do nothing, nothing whatsoever," Sanchez said. "The manager didn't respond when I told her about it. She said, 'We told our employees not to get involved so they won't get hurt.' "
The store did nothing wrong. This is MA, so had anyone got involved, they would have had to deal with the jackass cops, and daddy's lawyers. From the story.
"The 10-year-old's father, Robert Lee of Dorchester, said yesterday that the girl is shouldering most of the blame for a fight that she did not participate in. He identified the four as sisters." (Yeah, clown, that's yer spawn)
""How can a 10-year-old kid jump on a 20-something woman and beat her up?" said Lee. "They [police] locked her up, put her in handcuffs. . . . That isn't right." LOL!
"But authorities say their investigation indicates the girl was responsible for the worst of the violence.
Dumber than a bunch of rocks they are. That makes them dangerous.
There are more good people then bad in the world. But if they stand aside and do nothing rather then getting involved then they might as well not be here at all.
There is also a video to the right of the page. It will show what kind of area they are dealing with.
"It is not our policy to protect our patrons from physical assault."
Right. How about "We employ security guards to handle situations like this and do not encourage our 16 and 65 year old female clerks to demonstrate their Kung Fu yellow belt strategies on customers."
