Do you think an employer has the right to order their employees to get physically involved in such a thing?

Probably not, unless the employee was specifically employed to provide security, and even then there would be strict limits on what that employee could actually do. I understand that this area is something of a legal minefield. I was just pointing out that the Target corporate statement was ridiculous. A more accurate statement would be, "It is not our policy to protect our patrons from physical assault."

Right. How about "We employ security guards to handle situations like this and do not encourage our 16 and 65 year old female clerks to demonstrate their Kung Fu yellow belt strategies on customers."
