Physicists find way to 'see' extra dimensions

A new study demonstrates that the shapes of extra dimensions can be "seen" by deciphering their influence on cosmic energy released by the violent birth of the universe 13 billion years ago. The method, published today (Feb. 2) in Physical Review Letters, provides evidence that physicists can use experimental data to discern the nature of these elusive dimensions -- the existence of which is a critical but as yet unproven element of string theory, the leading contender for a unified "theory of everything." ...According to string theory mathematics, the extra dimensions could adopt any of tens of thousands of possible shapes, each shape theoretically corresponding to its own universe with its own set of physical laws. For our universe, "Nature picked one -- and we want to know what that one looks like," explains Henry Tye, a physicist at Cornell University who was not involved in the new research.

Ordinary 4-D Minkowski space has ten dimensions. If you need to do quantum mechanics such as thermodynamics, you right away have infinitely many dimensions and theorems to handle them.

For our universe, "Nature picked one -- and we want to know what that one looks like," explains Henry Tye, a physicist at Cornell University who was not involved in the new research.

That's not an explanation. In fact, it doesn't even make sense. What we know as "Nature," or the universe in general, is a direct result of whatever given dimension proposed by string theory...that is, if it's correct.

I'll tell ya, this selection mentality is really getting out of control in the sciences, even from a casual point of view.

Are there no men left in academia?

A map of the cosmic microwave background made by NASA's WMAP satellite shows density fluctuations in the early universe – regions of higher density were slightly warmer than voids. Similar maps by Planck may reveal the existence and shape of extra spatial dimensions (Image: NASA/WMAP Science Team)

Satellite could see shadow of extra dimensions

I have been reading a lot of books and web sites on string theory. It all seems very interesting, all these extra dimension and so fourth. I was just curious, it is supposed that these extra dimensions could be real, I have yet to read how the first three dimensions that we take for granted in this universe are real physical things. I know that the term dimension is used in plotting locations and trajectories of objects in space on paper, but are they real physical things that exist in the real universe?

Thank you.

Steve
