Ordinary 4-D Minkowski space has ten dimensions. If you need to do quantum mechanics such as thermodynamics, you right away have infinitely many dimensions and theorems to handle them.

For our universe, "Nature picked one -- and we want to know what that one looks like," explains Henry Tye, a physicist at Cornell University who was not involved in the new research.

That's not an explanation. In fact, it doesn't even make sense. What we know as "Nature," or the universe in general, is a direct result of whatever given dimension proposed by string theory...that is, if it's correct.

I'll tell ya, this selection mentality is really getting out of control in the sciences, even from a casual point of view.

Are there no men left in academia?

A map of the cosmic microwave background made by NASA's WMAP satellite shows density fluctuations in the early universe – regions of higher density were slightly warmer than voids. Similar maps by Planck may reveal the existence and shape of extra spatial dimensions (Image: NASA/WMAP Science Team)

Satellite could see shadow of extra dimensions
