Monday night's Fiesta Bowl was as good as it gets for underdogs like Boise State, an imperfect college football system and any sandlot kid who ever drew up a trick play.
Seldom has a major event in sports ended up this way
Billy, you go deep, run around the fire hydrant, and I'll hit you between there and the ice cream truck.
Boise State's 43-42 overtime win over Oklahoma at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., was the kind of thriller with the kind of buzz that spilled into the next day.
It was a victory for big dreamers and have-nots.
Oklahoma has won seven national titles in football. Boise State was a junior college until 1968.
"It shows that the gap is decreasing fast," Boise State running back Ian Johnson said about the gulf between the top teams and those not considered among the elite.
The Fiesta Bowl was supposed to be a nice prelude to next Monday night's Bowl Championship Series title game between No. 1 Ohio State and No. 2 Florida in the same stadium.
Instead, the first Fiesta stole the spotlight, at least for a day, of the "big" game.
"I hate to say this, I fell asleep and my wife kept hitting me," Florida Coach Urban Meyer said after arriving in Arizona on Tuesday. "She said it was the greatest football game she ever saw."
Shelley Meyer was not alone.

Ditto that!..........It may well be the greatest Football game ever!...........
It was a heckuva ballgame! No way OSU and Florida top this.
I think the writers may give them a lot of votes next week, if Florida wins.
Can't believe I fell asleep and missed the 2nd half!
Just think, if Ohio State wins, they'll be able to say that their record is as good as Boise State!
Agreed. And if OSU loses, I think Boise State should get a share of the title.
I kind of liked that; the Hook and Ladder followed by the old Statue of Liberty.
Ending for Men: Down by one - play call - Statue of Liberty Play for two point conversion for win and finish of undefeated season
Ending for Women - After star running back scores game wining touchdown he gets down on one knee and proposes marriage to cheerleader in front of the 50,000 fans and entire media...
I couldn't believe that play...and it was so great! What is interesting is that it wasn't the only trick play they tried. It was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When I started there it was Boise State College; my uncle was in the first graduating class of Boise Junior College in around 1934. They had good junior college football teams, and in the 70s great come-from-behind teams with players like Jim McMillan, Don & Terry Hutt, and Mike Holton.
Hadrian (BA Boise State 1977)
That would be the 1984 BC-Miami game.
The problem with these games is that the overtime period has a "contrived" look to it.
If Boise State had won the game on a two-point conversion like this after they scored a touchdown a the end of regulation, then this would certainly go down in my mind as one of the best games ever.
The rules are the rules. You plays the game with what you gots.......
Excellent way to spend 10 minutes:

I hope that the result of this fine game will open the eyes of so many who are unaware that there are excellent football programs out there who are locked out of higher level competition, and Bowl money, every year by the BCS cartel.
So far, there have been two non-BCS teams allowed to compete in the BCS system. In both cases they have won. Yet, we are told day in and day out that "mid-major" programs cannot compete with BCS teams.
I believe the answer was given again by Boise State.
Now, if only they will let my beloved TCU Horned Frogs play next year...
If this game had been in a Hollywood movie, it would not have been believeable..........
BCS S/B BS-C.......
I do not care for the overtime setup, but that is what they have, so I have to agree with Badger here.
It was a great game, but in that top photo, the ball carrier had his left hand out of bounds and the ball was not over the goal line. That should not have been called a TD. IIRC, it was called a TD.
