[Detroit] Lions news is bad news

...With a record of 2-11, the silver-and-Honolulu blue are firmly entrenched at No. 32 on any power poll in this spiral arm of the galaxy. Entrenched, that is, until another loss drops them behind Ohio State, Florida and the Hamburg Sea Devils. Think it can't get worse? Hey, this is the Lions. NFL schedule makers saw fit to arrange the endgame Kitty Cats' so, so long season likewise: at the Green Bay Packers where the Lions haven't won since a guy named Brett Favre took over there (that's right, 1992); against the Chicago Bears in a game which figures to see Motor City backers immortalize the chant "Fire *&#!!%&ing Millen!"; and at the Dallas Cowboys , who on New Year's Eve will probably looking to bag the No. 2 seed in the NFC... Kevin Jones, who was knocked out of the loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, figures to be out for the remainder of the season... Pro Bowl nominee Shaun Rogers... was slapped by the commissioner after testing positive for steroids. The judgment had Rogers forcibly sitting out four games and giving up $250,000. Naturally, "Big Baby" was innocent, protesting that the positive test represented a product that the 354-pound Rogers used to help him control his weight. Or he has asthma. Or he thought they were Shawne Merriman's Pez. Or something... Team officials announced yesterday that WR Mike Williams - you remember him: the former first-round draft pick cum The Most Useless Player in the NFL Today - flunked a weigh-in. At 240 pounds, Williams only missed the target set by Rod Marinelli and Co. by 20. Though no punitive measures have been mentioned, any punishment would seem pointless other then some quality time on the bench... Fire &#!!%&ing Millen.

And, that's their season.

The two guys calling the game for Fox today? One was competent, the other was an overtalkative, useless POS who doesn't belong on the air. It made more of an impact, because I actually don't watch the games, I just listen to them, or I check the results in the evening, and if they happened to have won, watch the highlights on YT. It's a big timesaver.

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/gametracker/preview/NFL_20181216_DET@BUF/

[snip] The Detroit Lions [5-8-0] are technically alive in the NFC playoff hunt, although they would have to vault seven other teams over the final three weeks of the season. [/snip]

according to https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/standings/playoffrace the seven teams are:

Minnesota (6-6-1), Carolina (6-7-0) which plays New Orleans twice with Atlanta in the middle, Philadelphia (6-7-0) (Rams, Texans, Redskins), Washington (6-7-0) (Jaguars, Titans, Eagles), Green Bay (5-7-1), Tampa Bay (5-8-0) (Ravens, Cowboys, Falcons), and N.Y. Giants (5-8-0) (Titans, Colts, Cowboys).

Detroit plays @ Buffalo; then vs Minnesota (they play Miami, then Chicago); season closer @ Green Bay (Bears, Jets, Detroit).

Since there are two 6-7-0 teams playing each other in that group of seven, it would appear that the best outcome for Detroit to get the help it needs would have them win three straight (otherwise, the rest is moot), the Vikings lose three in a row, the Packers get to 9 losses (including against Detroit), Carolina lose 2 out of 3, Eagles beat the Redskins and lose their other two games (actually not unlikely), and Tampa and Giants lose one more game each (that looks likely), and that would leave me with a dry mouth from having my jaw on the floor.

Da Bears (Packers, Niners, Vikings) need to beat GB and Minnesota or Detroit is out, Chicago wins the division regardless, and will probably run the table, even if their motivation falls off a bit, finishing regular season play with 11-5-0 or 10-6-0.

The Cowboys (Colts, Tampa Bay, Giants) beating the Buccaneers and then the Giants would leave them at 10-6-0 even with a loss to the Colts, but at this point I doubt that will happen. No impact on the Lions, apart from possibly hosting the Lions in the first round of the playoffs, y’know, assuming Hell freezes over and stuff. From this vantage point, if the Lions leap these seven teams, their first postseason matchup will be against the Bears, the Cowboys, or the Seahawks.

The Seahawks (Niners, Chiefs, Cards) are likely to end up no worse than 9-7-0, and have been playing better down the stretch. If they wind up running the table, they’ll push past the Cowboys with 11-5-0. That would be astonishing.

And, that's their season.

I consider Matt Patricia to be their rebound relationship. If the 2019 season starts (first four or five games and they have a losing record, he'll be gone. He does not have the skills.

Bad hold on the point after, early in the game, prevented overtime; an uncharacteristic FG miss by Prater would have won the thing. I've not seen the 2019 schedule (it obviously isn't ready yet), but I'll predict right now that they'll have a end with a 6-10 record, screw up their draft picks, lose a bunch of talent to free agency and career-ending injuries, muff a few trades, and still have to face at least five of the 2018 playoff teams during regular season play. And they'll hit 8 and 8. See you next off-season.

By contrast, the Vikings stayed alive with a 41-17 romp over Miami. Just a day or two ago there was pissing and moaning about how Kirk Cousins was an overpaid bust. Now the boo birds in a different fan base are carping about Aaron Rogers. One difference is, I'm enjoying the latter. ;^)

The Eagles went to Soldier Field and eked out a victory against the Bears? The question is building up on the sports shows -- do they cut loose Carson Wendt, or Nick Foles, and at what point do they make that decision? Apparently Wendt has less impact on their cap. But if Foles wins a second consecutive Super Bowl, do the other numbers on the field really matter? If Carson can't play a full season without injury, his ability is (as one of the sportscasters said) overshadowed by his unavailability. Fan reactions follow -- Caution: some BLUE LANGUAGE:

Huh, the Lions beat the Eagles in Philly, it was not merely a defensive struggle on both sides of the ball as I'd suspected. Lions are (technically) unbeaten at 2-0-1, Eagles are 1-2-0. The other Eagles loss was to the Falcons, who almost pulled it off vs the Colts today. Packers and Vikings both won, Bears play Monday night.

Foles wound up in Jacksonville, is currently on injured reserve due to collarbone / surgery, and the Jags are very happy with their backup, who's suddenly a media star (until *he* breaks something, god forbid).

Minnesota 42-30 over Detroit

Vikings

A

This was the kind of offense of performance that, if executed every week, would put Kirk Cousins in the MVP conversation. Yeah, I went there. The guy was consistent from start to finish, and if not for a Stefon Diggs drop, he would’ve had five touchdowns. Couple that with an excellently complementary running game headlined by Dalvin Cook, clutch depth in the wake of Adam Thielen’s injury and some timely defensive stands, and this was a Minnesota clinic. The only thing that would’ve made their day better was tighter pass coverage.

Lions

B+

Detroit certainly did not fail this game. Penalties were yet again a headache, and the lack of any consistent running game was again a problem, but they were never really out of this game, and while their defense obviously surrendered tons of long drives to Cousins and Co., they were also missing several starters due to injury. The Lions seem somewhat incapable of delivering that “it” play/performance to take a step toward serious contender, but you could do a whole lot worse.

Detroit is now 2-3-1. They've lost to GB and Minnesota, and have to play the Bears twice, and the other once each. Just within their division, they will probably split with all of them (that's the optimist in me), for 4-5-1, and their other games (Giants, Oakland, Dallas, Washington, Tampa Bay, Denver) actually look like a better than .500 schedule, meaning they will probably wind up watching the playoffs in TV, with a record of 8-7-1. Barring some amazing outcomes, GB will win the division, and may even sew up a first round bye (SF's current unbeaten record is a mirage, it was accomplished vs Tampa Bay 2-4, Cincinnati 0-7, Pittsburgh 2-4, Cleveland 2-4, L.A. Rams 4-3, and Washington 1-6). I'd consider that the best-case scenario at this point -- that, and the firing of Matt Patricia.

Yeah, so SF beat the Rams. The Rams have four wins, and only the win over the Saints was an outlier. The other wins have been agains Carolina (4-2), Cleveland (2-4), Tampa Bay (2-4), and Atlanta (1-6).

Cousins grew up about, well, in West Michigan, is an MSU Spartan alum, and the Redskins were stupid to let him go -- although I doubt he really wanted to stay there. This mitigates my disappointment, plus, whatever it is in the brain that processes disappointment with sports teams has been burned out of me by a lifetime of Lions mediocrity.

The Lions coaches decided that, rather than put the team in a position to possibly tie the game, went for two, putting the game out of reach. Nothing beats a team like having its coaches deliberately **** them over. There was no further point to exerting themselves on offense (with their young 2nd stringer QB) when it was no longer even a remote possibility. AND, two points wouldn't have made a difference in the outcome, because they still couldn't have won it with a field goal. See how stupid that was? Get it now? Basically, what they did was, try to win the game as time ran out and failed, but did it ten minutes early and eight points down. WTF. Useless, useless, useless. It's easy to believe that mob-run gambling orgs are paying people off (officials, coaches, players, the NFL itself) to fix games. The other 31 teams should just move to Vegas and get it over with.

Lions 16, Redskins 19.

Lions slip to 3-7-1, IOW, the best they can manage now is 8-7-1, if they ran the table.

They’re not going to run the table.

I’ve burned out on them and their decades-long losing record. Fire Matt Patricia, don’t fire him, who cares?

The fact that they still HIRE anyone with the first name “Matt” shows the whole organization suffers either from amnesia or PTSD.
