A Tribune staff report
Published: Sep 24, 2006
Bucs QB Chris Simms was admitted to St. Joseph's Hospital in critical condition because of injuries suffered in today's loss to the Carolina Panthers. The nature of his injuries has not yet been disclosed.
Simms briefly left the game in the third quarter to take treatment for deyhdration. He returned and and helped the Bucs rally from a 17-point deficit, though they ultimately lost, 26-24.
After the game, Simms was transported by ambulance to St. Joseph's, which is near Raymond James Stadium.
Coach Jon Gruden acknowledged in his post-game press conference that Simms was sore but didn't seem to know he had been transported.
Stay with TBO.com for details as they become available.
They just announced on NBC that this is not correct and that Simms is OK.
Thank God.
Big names equal source material.
Prayers out to Chris and his family.
It's official, he's one tough hombre. Hope he recovers well.
Relee says they removed his spleen. But your post was a good point about heat stroke in light of the Korey Stringer death.
Following splenectomy, the platelet count may rise to high levels in blood leading to an increased risk of clot formation.
Heparin or Coumadin could possibly counteract this. Of course, they could also lead to excessive bleeding.
They are more susceptible to certain times of infection but clotting of the blood isn't that big of an issue.
A hockey player for the Avalanche I believed had a similar injury and thought he'd be back before the end of the playoffs...
The problem is that Simms isn't just you're everyday pedestrian. His spleen is like a bag at the end of an artery. You can take the bag off and "tie" off the artery. But the area where you tie off the pedicle (stump) can be knocked loose and then you'll have tons of bleeding into his belly very quickly and then he may die. So it's advisable to wait a certain amount of time in order for scar tissue to form.
He's a tough dude and should have had a "flak" jacket on in order to minimize this possibility.... I guess when you're young you want the increased mobility and less weight.
But as many here know.... you take off your body armor.... you just might get hit there....
Nobody said life was fair... but the Bucs are scr#wed.
LOL! That was evident in week one!
Wouldn't want to place with important stuff like "Sunday Morning Talk Crap"
"Would this be a retirement injury?"
It's a main part of your immune system producing red blood blood cells and storing blood volume. I can't see him having the stamina during an entire football game in the future. I've had my spleen removed and tire much faster than most and run a low grade fever almost everyday. But that's just me. He's lucky he didn't bleed to death!
