Time for a new FreeRepublic folding@home thread.
Our FreeRepublic team of 300+ members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).
Currently, the team is in 144th place (with 1,045 CPUs - 24,200 completed Work Units and nearly 4,000,000 points)
This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 8 folding threads)

I have read about running F@H headless which i believe means without monitor.
I have came into a couple of extra computers but am short on monitors and room for them.
Anyone out there know how to run them without monitor through LAN.
O and those who recently passed me here i come.
Thanks

Hook a monitor up to one, boot it up, and go into BIOS and set the "Halt On:" to "No Errors". Disconnect the monitor cable and go to the next box. Repeat step 1.
Remember to think about a montoring program for each one before starting. This will save you a bunch of time later. Also, be sure each one is set to restart after a power failure, and they reboot smoothly. Check out Egon's monitoring page, it's slick !!!

There is another quick and easy option that they teach you NOT to do during A+ curriculum. That is to "hot adding" (switching) you monitor. Hook up the old computer to your monitor, configure it, get it folding away, hooked up to the LAN and with the 'puter still ON, UNPLUG the monitor!
In most cases it will still run, folding away. However, only do this if you don't give a rat's rear about your equipment. Also try to make sure that when hooking the monitor up, the 'puter is turned off.

That sounds like a very good way to blow up something. Worked on computers when i was in Air Force (B-52 bombing/navigation system) but that was a long time ago and computers have changed faster than i can keep up. I will be looking at hopefully three computers up and running on Monday only two monitors so will have to figure something out maybe try to find a small monitor for now.
Again thanks

Each computer station had two monitors, one keyboard, three cpu's - we used simple Radio Shack A/B switches to switch between each function.
Your set up is just the reverse, but very *do-able* with an A/B or A/B/C switch hooked between your one monitor and mutilple cpu's.

Are there ground rules for razzzzing Egon? Can it be about any subject or does it have to be about using Access (shudder)?

Congrats - I make it 20,877 - you be smokin' - a real joy watching you and Chris rocket north.
I'm on my way!
Heads-up houeto. I'm on your 6 and building steam.
It was depressing to drop from the top 20 down to an average of 170 - got some systems back on line a few days ago - and it's still going to rain more - and they started to kick in yesterday - popped from an avg of 170 yesterday AM and about to be over-run ... to 249 and some breathing room.
I think I can hold abner off - and bounce him out of the top 20 - if my duct tape and bailing wire holds together.
6 more days to go on a Tinker for 241 pts. Geeese. And I 'm sure I'm not the only one - but 2 in a row - back to back? Groan ... ah well - weeds out the weak sisters (DU? Heh- heh)
Folding-ON! Gotta find more systems! ":^) Gotta find more volunteers!

6 days for a Tinker? Is that one of your slower machines? Is it a Pentium, if so rhat specs?
I've got a Tinker project 1162 about to finish that downloaded yesterday morning. That works out to nearly 175 pts/day. That's about as good of a points per day as I get.
The machine the problems is running on (AMD 64, 2 ghz) is pretty good, but not top of the line for sure. I have read that Tinker runs better on an AMD, but I haven't seen figures to back it up.
The 2106 problems are the ones I dread, I get less than half the points per day as I will get for the Tinker above.
