Time for a new FreeRepublic folding@home thread.

Our FreeRepublic team of 300+ members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).

Currently, the team is in 144th place (with 1,045 CPUs - 24,200 completed Work Units and nearly 4,000,000 points)

This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 8 folding threads)

We won't pass any teams today but we will pass 3 teams tomorrow. We pass 3 more the next day and then 3 more in the next 2 days. Then 3 more teams the next day.

It's nice when we hit these "clusters".

A little shameless self-promotion here:

If you'd like to be able to track multiple folding PCs via the web, and be able to tell when individual PCs stop folding for one reason or another, I've devised a system to do this.

I won't post the link here for obvious reasons, but Freepmail me if you're interested.

I'd been holding steady at 40 for a few weeks, but just got passed by 3 power crunchers. Way to go!!!! This has been much more enjoyable than SETI. Thanks to all......Colin

I've only got ONE machine here at home worth a hoot. It's reasonably "beefy". The other three are anything from AMD-K6 400MHZ to P-III 800MHZ. It's all in a "heap" on a rollable rack and has been christened the "WSMs"....Wind Sucking Machines.

I'm still thinking about those Sun Enterprise class machines over at work though...heh..heh... talking about an "UNFAIR" advantage! I'll find out tomorrow or Friday if they'll run the client in Linux. :-)

OK, soccer_maniac - I'm sitting at 365 points so far for today, and I have a 404 pt WU scheduled to finish real soon, so I should push over 760 points in this 24 hour period and suddenly appear high up on your list you just posted... Be sure to post it here when I do, since I'll drop like a stone and have another day with 0 points tomorrow. (my chart looks like a pogo stick for the last couple of weeks!)

Well, I lost two machines in Sundays storms (middle TN). I've got one almost ready to come back online, but the other one may be toast. It was my slowest machine, so I may not rebuild it right away. The Budget Director in the kitchen is failing to see the logic in building another AMD X2 machine, but I'm going to refine my presentation and keep trying. Meanwhile, alas, my ascent is to be slowed somewhat.

That's funny! I refer to mine as the Budget Committee. Great minds and all that...

Hi Egon - thanks for the Linux PHP script. Still have'nt figured out how to run it, so I've given up for now - maybe try again when I have more time.

I did find out that I have several different installs of PHP, but I don't have the libcurl installed. I posted some questions to the Mepis (my version of Linux) website & they were pretty helpful in learning more about Mepis and the packages installed. Here's a link, if you're interested:
http://www.mepis.org/node/9511

Anyway, thanks for your efforts. I like seeing how some of our other team members are doing and how many CPUs they have.

Same over here - rain Bay Area CA - lost my buddies systems (he's in Poland) limped back online for a while today - then more rain.

My brave little 667 PowerBook finally completed 11 days of crunching only to get another 11 day assignment.

I actually made the top 20 for a day before everything went south.

Well - back to folding - when things settle down I'm going to do egon's thing!

Hi Egon - thanks for the Linux PHP script. Still have'nt figured out how to run it, so I've given up for now - maybe try again when I have more time.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Still a beginner at this Linux stuff. I'll be watching that thread to see what they come up with, and incorporate it into the help page wherever possible.

I know that the PHP interpreter we're using is able to be invoked just by running the script at the command line. I suspect that the magic is in the first line of the script, which tells the shell where to find the interpreter for the script.

Once you're able to successfully run the script from the command-line, that's where cron comes in. You'll basically create a crontab that will automatically kick off the script on a regular schedule. I've almost got enough information to write that section of the help file now.

As the installation of PHP seems to vary between the flavors of Linux and the installers available (sounds like you're using Synaptec, whereas I use Aptitude) and the availability of different PHP interpreters, I'm not sure I can successfully integrate that into help.

I've figured out that curl and libcurl components are the mechanisms by which the information is actually transmitted via HTTP.

Someone in that thread mentioned the option of creating a shell script to accomplish the same functionality. Not sure that would work. While a shell script could possibly grep the information out of the unitinfo.txt file, I don't think it has the sophistication to wrap the info in XML, let alone send it via HTTP.
