We had a house overlooking Lake Erie, with steps leading down the cliff to the beach if you would call jagged rocks a beach! My dad used to work on ore boats and we could see ore boats from the cliff sometimes, way out in the distance. Probably just one of the reasons that I like the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Sounds totally beautiful.

I like the song, but I'm not sure it would work for AI. It's a story song that wouldn't fit in the short timeframe the contestants have available to them. The contestants need something that makes an impact in about 90 seconds.

There are several songs on that list I could see Taylor doing. I could easily see him doing numbers 2, 5, 10, 12, 20, 24, 26, and 29.

The question is what songs has AI obtained rights to. I would love to see Taylor do Rod Stewart's 'Tonight's The Night.' Sexy song and it's perfect for Taylor's voice. But Stewart didn't let them do any of his material during Rod Stewart night, only the old standards he's been recording recently.

I think Taylor would do a great rendition of 'Heard It Through The Grapevine,' not the Creedence Clearwater Revival version, but the Marvin Gaye version.

They can be sued, of course, but I doubt if the complainant would win, because the manipulation is so crafty and known only to the insider producers. It would be a hard case to prove.

But if someone sues and wins, it could ruin the careers of the two Simons; the Randy, the Paula, the Seacrest and others. It would be like the $64,000 Question scandal of the olden days.

Someone suggested on Scarborough that the FCC shoud crack down on AI and its producers and give them a hefty fine (if the public is being manipulated). Joe's expert said the FCC can't do a thing because the production company is British??? Maybe some legal-type person on here can clear that up.

True. It WOULD be a hard case to prove unless it was possible to catch someone redhanded messing with the sound system just before a contestant went on the air, or something equally nasty like that.

You're so right, misterrob. It is not a beauty contest.

I've been thinking of all the oldtime singers who were really homely (Elliott is not. He's an average-looking guy.) Just naming some of the oldtimers made me smile--Mickey Rooney! Jimmy Durante! Louis Armstrong! Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gormet! Sammy Davis Jr.! Danny Kaye! Tex Beneke! And more recently--Mick Jagger; all of the Beatles; and Lyle Lovett.

And when you get right down to it, Randy, Paula, and Simon ain't all that in the looks department.

What do looks have to do with being a wonderful singer and entertainer? With being an American Idol?

Heard it through the grapevine has been done too much. I think he'd be better off with the Rod Stewart one (but as you pointed out, will he let them use his material) or Seeger's - Night Moves. I could really see him doing that one.

There's another song from 1976 that wasn't on my list, "All By Myself." I love that song and I think Taylor could do a very good job with it.
