Can anyone describe the process for ripping a cd to an MP3 format? Is aftermarket software required?

I use Music Match, version 7.5 and converted all of my 100s of CDs to mp3. No problem and mostly automatic.

It's just a matter of importing the .wav recordings you make into iTunes, and having it convert them.

Use Exact Audio Copy which can link to Lame. Both are free and there is nothing, repeat nothing, either free or paid that can touch them for quality.
Quick start guide is here.

FLAC > LAME.
But EAC is a good program. Just not as good as, say, Easy CD-DA Extractor. :)

"FLAC > LAME" Agreed, flac lossless is better Lame encoded mp3. Indeed all my stuff is in FLAC for a network Squeezebox. Indeed the Squeezebox with flac sounds better than the original CD on a Sherwood CD-980 which is a fairly well regarded player.
However, the original question was for mp3. I know some portable players will play flac but its been a long time since I looked.
Considering that my ears are over 65 years old, I probably can't tell the difference anyway between a high bitrate Lame mp3 and a lossless flac recording. :-)

Alright, I give. In the context of mp3, LAME is pretty good. Though alt.preset.extreme is IMO the best quality one can wring out of an mp3.
It's amazing how much better the encoders have gotten in the past 5 years.

My 2 cents says...use
Audiograbber.
I've used a bunch of different software and this one is the easiest and most configurable.

How much sound quality do you lose going from CD to mp3? I am a fairly serious audiophile, and am considering the purchase of an IPod, but not if my sound quality is going to degrade.

It depends on the format you select and the encoder you use. For the most part, 128kbps MP3s encoded in iTunes with error correction and VBR enabled will give you an identical-sounding music file. Use 192 or 256kbps if you're really worried, but music encoding routines have come so far from where they were 5 years ago that it a 128kbps mp3 created today sounds better than a 384kbps file created a couple of years ago.

Windows Media Player version 10 will allow you to convert to MP3 format.
ITunes works as well.....
You don't need to pay money for that, or at least I wouldn't.....
