'Brokeback' finds a welcome in the 'burbs
The Los Angeles Times ^ | December 19, 2005 | R. Kinsey Lowe

Will "Brokeback Mountain" play in Plano? In the movie's first weekend in the Dallas suburb where the 2004 Mel Gibson film "The Passion of the Christ" earned some of its biggest grosses, the answer appeared to be yes.

After setting a record for the per-theater average for a dramatic movie in limited openings in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, critically acclaimed "Brokeback Mountain" faced its next obstacle as Focus Features expanded the so-called gay cowboy movie to strategically selected smaller cities.

The movie, directed by Ang Lee and starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal as two ranch hands who develop an enduring emotional bond, "Brokeback Mountain" took in an additional $2.36 million in its first foray outside those three metropolitan cities, rising to No. 8 at the box office, Focus Features estimated Sunday. Its 10-day total is $3.3 million.

The closely watched debut in Plano, Texas, "was a revelation about the accessibility of this movie," said Focus head of distribution Jack Foley. "This is not gay-dependent. Attendance at those theaters indicates the film has the attention of suburban moviegoers."

It was the first time since Disney's animated "Pocahontas" in 1995 that a movie in fewer than 100 theaters cracked the top 10 box office ranking, according to tracking service Nielsen EDI Inc.

Brokeback Mountain" faced its next obstacle as Focus Features expanded the so-called gay cowboy movie to strategically selected smaller cities.

The venue was chosen to be "strategic" only in that they thought they could spin this as some sort of indication that the movie is doing well with the average American, which we all know is not the case. They're reporting this as if the movie got a huge draw in small-town America. Plano has a quarter million people and it is inside the major metropolitan area of Dallas. Show it in a true small town away from a metropolitan area and see what happens. Pack the theater in some place like Brenham, TX and I'll admit that would be significant, but getting some people to go to the movie in Plano proves nothing.

There was a similar story about it opening in Jackson Wyoming, which is of course the only town in Wyoming where they wouldn't burn down the theater.

I don't see who will go to this movie? Straight 20-30 y/o males won't be caught dead near a theater showing a guy on guy love story. That's half the demographic they need to claim success. This is plainly an attempt by gay activists to shove the gay agenda down everyone's throat.

Well, the people's Detroit Free Press "movie critic", Terry Lawson gave it four out of a possible four stars on Sunday. Lawson is a distinguished alumni of the Josef Goebbels school of journalism. I'm sure the for sale Ebert and Roper have given it two big thumbs up as well.

As they did Farenheit 9-11. The same movie they discussed as if it were not a propaganda piece.

That just cannot be true.

People in Middle America will not submit to such filth!

That was my first thought also. Would have been interesting to see the crowd coming out.

When the trailers were shown there was derisive laughter everywhere.

Oh jeez! I took my kids to see Kong the other night, forgetting that the evening previews sometimes differ from matinee versions. I was praying that the trailer for this "gay" flick wouldn't run. I really don't care to have the "gay" discussion with my pre-teens.

A film about gays setting records in SOLID blue country - Imagine that!

This does not mean it will play well in red country. But I guess the hollywierd folk have to try to convince us red staters that its OK to see this dog.

What is Plano? I've heard the name before, but have no clear understanding of the place.

I'd hate to be the usher that has to clean up after one of the showings. Probably worse than a porn theater after Pee wee Herman was in the audience.

I'm willing to bet that they counted the box office from the Angelika Theater in Plano. It is an arthouse place that is frequented by the gay and lesbian community of North Dallas.

Go to any mainstream theater in Plano and they can;t give away tickets to Brokenback (sip) Mountain.

I guess there is no story in the fact that its done less than 3 million at the box office after 2 1/2 weeks.??? Go to box office mojo. com...Google it. This is the 2nd story ive seen proclaiming it to be a cultural phenom...yet NO ONE is going to see it. Thats so weird that the media would try and push this movie on us..??

Plano is also where cops arrested Michael Irvin for having a pot pipe--with NO pot in it. That's queer enough.

Oh, that's cold! Or are you saying it's not playing in Southern Ohio and it is in Northern KY? They'll be a lot more people crossing the river for the next Bengals game for sure.

Like so many movies these days, it had 4-star reviews since before the first scene was filmed.
