Well, I said that the cookies are all she asked for. She knows she'll get more than that. But she is a good kid...most of the time. Even as a kid, she would tell me, at those times we were having a hard time making ends meet, that I didn't need to worry about buying her a lot of stuff for Christmas. She never went without, although there were Christmases I had to cut a lot of corners. She never minded.

Southern Football vs Northern Football

Women's Accessories:
NORTH: ChapStick in back pocket and a $20 bill in the front pocket.
SOUTH: Louis Vuitton duffel with two lipsticks, waterproof mascara,
and a fifth of Captain Morgan/Crown. Money is not necessary - that's
what dates are for.

Stadium Size:
NORTH: College football stadiums hold 20,000 people.
SOUTH: High school football stadiums hold 20,000 people.

Campus Decor:
NORTH: Statues of founding fathers.
SOUTH: Statues of Heisman trophy winners.

Homecoming Queen:
NORTH: Also physics major.
SOUTH: Also Miss America.

Cheerleaders:
NORTH: If you are slightly coordinated, you make the varsity squad.
SOUTH: You begin cheer camp at age two, complete with ballet, dance, &
gymnastic training.

Getting Tickets:
NORTH: 5 days before the game you walk into the ticket office on
campus and purchase tickets.
SOUTH: 5 months before the game you walk into the ticket office on
campus & put name on the waiting list.

Friday Classes After a Thursday Night Game:
NORTH: Students and teachers not sure they're going to the game,
because they have classes on Friday.
SOUTH: Teachers cancel Friday classes because they don't want to see
the few hung-over students that might actually make it to class.

Parking:
NORTH: An hour before game time, the University opens the campus for
game parking.
SOUTH: RVs sporting their school flags begin arriving on Wednesday for
the weekend festivities. The really faithful arrive on Tuesday.

Game Day:
NORTH: A few students party in ! the dorm and watch ESPN on TV.
SOUTH: Every student wakes up, has a beer for breakfast, and rushes
over to where ESPN is broadcasting "Game Day Live" to get on camera
and wave to the idiots up north.

Tailgating:
NORTH: Raw meat on a grill, beer with lime in it, listening to local
radio station with truck tailgate down.
SOUTH: 30-foot custom pig-shaped smoker fires up at dawn. Cooking
accompanied by live performance by "Dave Matthews' Band," who comes
over during breaks and asks for a hit off bottle of bourbon.

Getting to the Stadium:
NORTH: You ask "Where's the stadium?" When you find it, you walk right
in.
SOUTH: When you're near it, you'll hear it. On game day it becomes the
state's third largest city.

Concessions:
NORTH: Drinks served in a paper cup, filled to the top with soda.
SOUTH: Drinks! served in a plastic cup with the home team's mascot on
it, filled less than halfway with soda, to ensure enough room for
Captain Morgan/Crown.

When National Anthem is Played:
NORTH: Stands are less than half full, and less than half of them
stand up.
SOUTH: 100,000 fans, all standing, sing along in perfect four-part
harmony.

The Smell in the Air after the First Score:
NORTH: Nothing changes.
SOUTH: Fireworks, with a touch of Captain Morgan/Crown.

Commentary (Male):
NORTH: "Nice play."
SOUTH: "D@mmit, you slow sumbitch - tackle him and break his legs!"

Commentary (Female):
NORTH: "My, this certainly is a violent sport."
SOUTH: "D@mmit, you slow sumbitch - tackle him and break his legs!"

Announcers:
NORTH: Neutral and paid.
SOUTH: Announcer harmonizes ! with the crowd in the fight song, with a
tear in his eye because he is so proud of his team.

After the Game:
NORTH: The stadium is empty way before the game ends.
SOUTH: Another rack of ribs goes on the smoker. While somebody goes to
the nearest package store for more bourbon; planning begins for next
week's game.

Goodnight Westy, I can't wait to see your pictures each night. Elliott BAY. I went up in the Space Needle last Saturday and saw the sunset around the Sound. It wasn't nearly that dramatic!

Regarding football, it's all true, Nully. I might add the following:

Memory:
NORTH: Even the most dedicated fan can only vaguely recall who played last week.

SOUTH: Anyone entering kindergarten is expected to know the stats, scores and bad calls that resulted in a loss for the home team for every game since the Taft Administration.

*rolling eyes*

This year: North: Two teams play in the most watched bowl (Fiesta)

South: Two teams (West Virginia has a team?) play in the least watched bowl in history (Sugar).

For the.....ahem....elderly Floridians: Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno put the pads on and play one on one.

Alas, poor Michigan........all dressed up and no where to play.........

:-)

Thank you for proving my point about typical northerner knowledge of football, Mr. Northern Football. West Virginia is not a "Southern" team and is a member of the BIG EAST conference that includes other "Southern" teams such as Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Connecticut, Rutgers and Cincinnati.

As for the Fiesta Bowl (actually the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl which is of course sacreligious since everyone knows that real bowl games have names that begin with Rose, Orange, Sugar and Cotton) ... anyway, as I was saying, who wants to watch the ghost of Woody Hayes rassle the ghost of Frank Leahy?

Besides. I think that you have confused "most watched bowl" with "most eaten" bowl game snack (Tostitos). It is a common mistake among those who have spent too many sunless days in the frozen north.

*ahem*

AS I recall, Miami was in the big East two years ago along with Va Tech, and Fla. State wasn't in the ACC.

Now how did that happen, Mr. Southern football?

:-)

Sigh ...

Anyone south of Detroit knows that Miami, despite its geographical position, was until recently a northern school in a northern city, populated by those few yankees who had sense enough to move south BEFORE retirement. Along with Virginia Tech and Florida State, Miami is now in the ACC. Where they may have been in the distant past is irrelevant.

The "Alamo" Bowl? I thought that was a car rental company.

Why, of course.......Doh! *slapping forehead*......Miamia is a Northern city.....

The "Alamo" Bowl

No excuses for the rental cars, but it will probably have about the same interest and viewers as the Sugar Bowl...........West virginia? Ugly.....very ugly.

Florida isn't a southern state. It wasn't part of the Confederacy, and parts of it are packed cheek to jowl with newyawkers.

West virginia? Ugly.....very ugly.

NEWS FLASH: Several thousand angry coal miners led by Senator Robert Byrd today descended upon Michigan in what on-scene observers have described as a determined hunt for a Mr. L. Shark. Mr. Shark, reportedly mired in deep depression because of Michigan's failure to secure a meaningful Bowl Game bid, is alleged to have insulted the good people of the Moonshine Mountain State whose team will face the awesome University of Georgia Bulldogs in this year's Sugar Bowl.

Go Huskers
