This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Did you learn anything about either shoeing for navicular or preventing it that I might be able to use?

Just some information I picked up this weekend...I don't know what kind of shoes that Bay has on, but you might think about getting him in some of these...
The roll at the toe moves the breakover back and keeps the stress off the end of the coffin bone and the rim design on the sides lets their foot roll to the side better as they turn, also decreasing the stress on the navicular bone. But if you don't like these, they said that at least using a normal rim type shoe like these St. Croix Eventers is better for basically the same reasons.

I want to have a discussion with both the farrier and the vet this spring to make sure we're doing all we should do. I want Bay to stay sound and comfortable, not just this summer, but as long as he can.
How is Sarah Lee doing these days? I talked to Mom the other day. I had to let her off the hook about a doll I thought I used to have.

Hey, great to have you here! Hopefully you're wife will drop by and at least lurk for a while. It took me a while to decide to join in, but once I did it was "Katy bar the door"! We have fun and learn a lot too.
I live in NW Alabama so I've got 'em broke in to my "Suthern English" pretty good.
Yeah, I know what you're talking about. They're called a Trooper saddle and quite a few of my riding buddies use them and say they are the most comfortable saddles they've ever ridden. Tucker makes one like this...
but I know an Amish guy in Etheridge, TN that makes a really nice one that's very reasonably priced. He made the one that's on the black horse in this picture. It's several years old and very well worn, but the owner loves it.

Yup... this one makes three serious romances... Mine, Jen and Talon, and Ruthy and Ramius... four if you count another couple who didn't meet on the thread, they were already together, but they did propose on the thread. :~D

I can definately keep the barefoot ones trimmed. I'm not going to even attempt to set a shoe. I can probably get by with the Old Mac boots on Tennessee's front feet, although now that I have his feet in good shape, the size I bought is really too big. But I met a girl there who uses them all the time on all her horses and she told me about a Natural Hoof Trim group on Yahoo who has a boot swap web page that I'm going to check into to see about selling mine and possibly picking up a used set of smaller ones. She also told me a cheaper place to buy them new. It was a very productive weekend.

Your pictures to Hair of the horseshoes reminded me to run out and get some pictures of Harley's new shoes.
Teri called them frogleg shoes, but Chris had never heard of them. He said he understood tho why she want's this done, keeps his foot on the ground longer with will extend his stride...???? I don't get that. Looks to me to do that they would have to extend out the front rather then the back. I'm not getting the mechanics of this, but he did, so I guess I'm OK. I may run him back to the vet and have Teri check it to make sure we've got it right.

Wow, those are some long heeled shoes! I think the mechanics of the long heel is that the trailer on the heel hits the ground sooner, causing the foot to come down sooner and keeping it from hitting the sole of the shoe in front of it. But that's just a guess on my part.
I hope we showed it can work... and the other singles looked around and said... hmmm... :~D
Yeah, those are in the back. No horse could keep those on in the front, I would think.
