This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Tomorrow we will be back in the 80's
Well, the dog got a reprieve. I got the name of a guy that picks up dogs in this area and he wants to take it to a lady that he works with that rehabs dogs. I told him that I didn't the dog was rehabbable, it acts like it has brain damage, but he said this woman works wonders and can bring any dog out of its shell. If it works out, they will find it a more suitable home, one that's no so chaotic as mine or my sister's.
My shoer got the halter on the filly and it wasn't easy. He had to rope her. I can take it from here. (I hope)
Also, the shoer looked at the donkey and cleaned out a big abscess but she's foundered so many times that the hoof wall has separated. It's getting dirt and grime up in there and causing abscess after abscess.
I hate to hear that about Charlee. Maybe something like an Easyboot would help, but I'm not sure if they come that small. Poor thing!
Looks beautiful! That bay horse is Jake, isn't it?
I bought the smallest size easyboot they had but it was still too big. Donkeys have funny shaped feet.
Good job on the stall doors! They look like they got racing stripes on 'em with those different color boards.
Henkell sure is pretty. Those markings on his upper front legs and thighs are really cool. They look like lightening bolts.
That big tree out by the pasture fence is really nice. It looks like a hackberry from what I can see. Your house sure has some really nice shade trees around it too. It keeps it cooler in the summer I'll bet. I hate it when they go in and bulldoze every tree in sight when they are doing a new house. It's such a waste!
Don't they though! Mules too. All the ones I've seen have been really compact with lots of heel. It's almost like they grow straight up.
Yes, that is Jake. He really loves being out all the time now. He is very bossy though and tries to tell Henkell what to do and when to do it!
I love those trees! They keep the house cool in the summer. Only problem with them is that they drop dead limbs all over the place and spread out laterally. We have to keep them trimmed back. The ones behind the house are fruitless mulberry trees. The horses love to eat the leaves which fortunately are not toxic to them.
I am not sure what the other tree is. It could be a hackberry. Technically, it is on the lot next door, but the lot is empty. A farmer used to farm it but it has been sold to someone so the farmer isn't using it anymore. I wish someone would come out and mow it though. Since the farmer quit farming it, the weeds have taken over.
The boards are different colors because I replaced the rotten ones on the pallets with new boards.
I got those pallets for free some years ago. I used to work for a computer consulting company. We sold a bunch of Compaq servers to a customer which were delivered on these really nice pallets. We were just going to throw them away so I filled up my truck and took some home. I use them to put hay on.
Terrific pictures, I love that you included a lot of shots that show your place and your farm. It's really lovely and your horses show the glow of really fine horsekeeping. I appreciate that.
They basically have a club foot don't they? It kindof cracks me up the way we assess conformation and faults in horses... club-foot, straight upright hocks, narrow steep shoulders, and yet donkeys and mules stay remarkably sound in work.
I feel for you in treating your old guy. - Glad you got a halter on the kid. Heh.... It'd have sure been easier when she weighed 80 pounds. When you work with her, have someone take pictures of the rodeo!
It would be a nice day here today if it wasn't windy. The windy is cold.
I'm sort of glad the weather isn't that great. I'm really feeling lousey today. Haven't hardly been off the couch except to run to town to get the stuff to make a pot of chicken soup:)....UUUMMMMMMM. Witht the weather so chilly I feel justified staying on the couch. Hopefully tomorrow will be better, and I can ride.
Becky
If you're still feeling a little iffy, I'm glad you didn't push it and ride in the cold weather. Harley will sill be in fine shape for your ride, I'm sure.
I really enjoyed both of you guy's pictures:)
Becky
Yeah, I think he will be fine too. As I've mentioned before we are only doing 15 miles each day. That will be easy, for both of us, thank heavens:)
Becky
You better take it easy now or you'll still be sick when it comes time for your ride! We sometimes take better care of our horses than we do of ourselves.
