Hurrican Katrina - Museums destroyed, damaged or looted.
email

Don't know if this has been mentioned before but I have gotten several emails from museum personnel and historians which have some bad news.

D-Day Museum in New Orleans has been looted and much of what wasn't taken was destroyed by vandals.

Confederate Museum in New Orleans remained intact as of 2 days ago. The fear now is that it will be looted or vandalized. The sign outside identifying the museum has been removed to discourage vandalism.

Beauvoir (Jefferson Davis' last home)in Biloxi has been extensively damaged. Some reports indicate that many of the artifacts including Davis' personal papers have been retrieved and secured. Other artifacts are presumed lost including two recently restored Confederate Battle Flags of the 2nd Mississippi Infantry, one of which was captured at Gettysburg.

Old Capital Museum in Jackson has lost most of its roof and many historic artifacts have been damaged or destroyed

Not as important as the human cost but to a historian like me, it just makes a bad situation even worse.

Sigh. Not surprising. Although it would be interesting if the flags/items were removed by someone who wanted to protect them from destruction after watching the looting and lawlessness.

Only a few weeks ago I was making plans to make my second trip to the D-Day Museum. The Pacific Theater exhibit had been constructed since I'd last been there and I'd wanted so much to see it.

Saddened but not surprised. Artifacts that survived Normandy couldn't survive Louisiana.
