Underwood, Martin Are Sexiest Vegetarians

1 hour, 58 minutes ago

If only Bo Bice had cut down on the ribs. Carrie Underwood, who beat out Bice to win the "American Idol" crown in May, was voted the "World's Sexiest Vegetarian" in PETA's annual online poll. She shares the honor with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin.

More than 13,000 votes were cast in the contest run by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the animal rights group announced Tuesday.

Underwood, a 22-year-old Oklahoma native, wore a "V for Vegetarian" T-shirt on the Fox show. Martin, 28, and his wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, made headlines when they gave their 1-year-old daughter, Apple, a vegan birthday cake.

Underwood and Martin beat out other famous veggie lovers including David Duchovny, Reese Witherspoon, Avril Lavigne, Joaquin Phoenix and Prince.

Last year, Andre 3000 of OutKast and Alicia Silverstone won the "sexiest vegetarian" title. Other previous winners include Tobey Maguire, Lauren Bush and Shania Twain.

Respect for life involves respect for All life.

If that's true, it includes vegetables, you murderer you.

I was a little tongue in cheek, but serious too. River was also a vegan and claimed only to eat natural, organic foods.

I had an opportunity to hang out with River one night in 92 and he chain smoked like a fiend while guzzling beer the whole time. He even took a leak in the alley while taking a walk - *very* hip! /sarcasm

One of my friends all the way back to 2nd grade is a cousin of the "Phoenix" family (real last name is Bottom - yes, it's true, River Bottom was his real name). The sister Rainbow was just as hypocritical - she wore leather but claimed to LOVE her some PETA!

Maybe its because I know too much, like E. coli O157:H7 ;), so I approach meat in a very cautious fashion. Like you said, it doesn't take much for me to have enough. If it isn't super fresh and really good quality, it can be pretty nasty.

Like the last time I tried a burger at Checkers...DEAR GOD! How old was that heifer when she died!

Since I was raised on near the coast, I will almost always eat fish, shrimp, oysters etc over beef, pork or chicken.

Meat still isn't the 'star' of a meal for me. Something like whole grain pasta, fresh beans, cherries, raspberries, asparagus, leaf lettuce, sweet corn, fresh bread and CHOCOLATE will always win out as my center of the plate ;)

We are killers, we humans. Born and bred. Our teeth are a carnivores and our gut is designed to break down proteins, predominately from other animals.

Vegetarianism is an abberation. A hypersensitivity to the "suffering" of non-sapient species that borders on the delusional.

But, it's a free planet. In my opinion you not only have a right to life, but a right to chose when to end that life. Just don't come crying to me when your restricted diet starts screwing with your ligature or your nervous system because you aren't getting the right kinds of amino's from your carrots and soybeans.

Vegetarians have always looked sallow and unhealthy to me. The two in the article are no exception.

Like I haven't heard that one a million times.

For clarity, here's my vegetarian's creed:

1. I won't eat it if it has eyes; or
2. I won't eat it if it has parents; or
3. I won't eat it if it screams when it's killed.

And as for that last, I'm an ex-hunter and I have visited slaughterhouses, so I know about the screaming.

Hunters like to kill things for fun. It's not tradition or a love of the outdoors ("I love the nature, I want to go kill something"), or some American Indian mysticism--it's killing for fun.

I do my best to respect all life, human and unhuman. I'm not perfect but I try to minimize the damage I do.

Oh, and "fruitarians" live only on fruit, which means NOTHING dies when they eat. I'm not convinced that's a healthy lifestyle, though I have several friends who are trying it out.

"Gwyneth Paltrow, made headlines when they gave their 1-year-old daughter, Apple, a vegan birthday cake."

That stupid cake, plus the ridiculous name, are reasons enough to put Gwyneth into a crooked nursing home.

How come these Peta tards never mention a very famous vegetarian, Hitler?

Vegetarianism is a choice not to kill. To embrace a destructive lifestyle such as you do is to stagger through life mindlessly, believing the commercial meat industry's many propaganda messages that you were born to eat carrion.

No potatoes, then?

I hunt (upland) because of tradition and a love of the outdoors. I fish for those reasons, too. I'm sure many people hunt because they get a rod over killing or destroying something, but among the people I hunt with, or have met while hunting all over New England, and in Michigan, too, I'd wager my yearly salary that there's not a thrill-killer in the bunch. The kill is the worst part of the evolution, if you ask me.

Nice resonator, by the way.

Well, now you've heard it a million and one times.

"Hunters like to kill things for fun."

At least we agree on something. Hopefully I'll nail another deer this fall.

Fluffy-headed nonsense. Everything about us is built on the predator model, not the herbivore.

I'm a vegetarian. I'm also a militant conservative of the Dark Side school.

Make distinctions between vegetarians who are PETA idiots and those who are following a variation of my grandfather's old dictum, "Self denial is good for the soul".

For me, it is a discipline, and a good one. I would not force it on others.

Regards, Ivan

Didn't Joaquin change his name from Leaf? I take it the parents were hippies.

Yes, Joaquin did go by Leaf a few years back but I'm not so sure that the term "hippie" would apply to the family - they're originally "Okies" (from Oklahoma). Just to give you an idea of how odd the family tree is, my friend told me that she is the product of wife-swapping (just the fact that she would be aware of this is odd in and of itself). Apparently her mom was married and her dad was married & the two couples were messing around - well, the dad's wife was 'fixed' and the mom's husband was 'fixed', so when the mom came up pregnant, they realized it was from their extramarital 'fun' and, thus, my friend was born. The couples both divorced and her mom and dad got married (and are still together 30 some years later). Although the "Phoenix" clan comes from Oregon according to Wikipedia, they are originally from Oklahoma as are my friend's parents. ((Disclaimer: I am NOT trying to imply that all who hail from Oklahoma give their kids strange names or engage in partner swapping!!!))

If the actual killing was all that bad, you'd never do it. Fact is, hunting, by definition, is killing. There's no semantic way of dancing around that.

I find people who enjoy killing sad. And pathetic.
