The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I'd have asked the little wiccan missies whether they meant "cut" or "Reduction in growth of spending" but I figured they wouldn't know.

That mighta started their heads spinning. You could have precipitated a real live "Exorcist moment"!

Maybe... I'll try next time.

Ok, someone slipped something into my drinking water today. I suddenly come to myself on the sofa with a needle and thread in hand, mending a ripped nightgown. Cleaning must be a gateway drug to all sorts of other householdy things.

And it doesn't look too dreadful either.

I have a computer question for all of you...

A friend of mine is considering buying a laptop and is looking at an HP Pavilion with the AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (2.0 GHz) processor. Is this a good choice for a processor, and are there any known problems with them or compatability issues? She'd be running Microsoft WindowsXP, Office, and dialup internet.

Thanks for any info or advice you can give me...

I've never tried an HP laptop with an Athlon chip. I will say she should get either the high-end AMD chip she's looking at, or a Pentium - Celerons are no good in a laptop.

Just going by the specs it sounds fine but I don't have much personal experience with non-Intel processors.

Phew! Made it to the next site. Good thing I brought all my connectivity devices...I'm using my old ethernet card.

However, I should have brought my keyboard too..the right side of my laptop has gone all wonky. I'm having to use the onscreen keyboard.

Clare and I are going to the midnight party at Borders. I managed to call 15 mins. before closing time on the last night for pre-orders, and I got 2 copies. I still have one on order from AmazonUK for Clare, though.

Oh, Clare was reading the British set I got for her birthday, and got to the last three chapters of "Phoenix" and found that there was a hugh defect. They'd left out the last three chapters and replaced them with the first three chapters of the same book! She didn't notice until night before last, and that's outside of their typical 30 day return policy, but I sent them an e-mail anyway since this was a defect, not just me changing my mind. I got an e-mail from them today saying that he's sending me the entire set again, but he said a paperback set. I didn't want to be greedy, but I did pay for a hardback set, so I wrote them back. Haven't heard back yet.

Oh, dear...

If you happen to end up with a spare English copy of Goblet, let me know - I'd love to take it off your hands. I've got mismatched versions of the other four.

Is the Num Lock on? My laptop keyboard has those as secondary values for the keys you specify.

I thought I'd save some packing space. Haven't used the laptop board in so long, I didn't know it was doing this.
