The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Yes... but as I recall, Santa Anna eventually took the Alamo, but then got his butt kicked at ________ ?

Heh... I was just quoting the Marty Robbins' song, "The Ballad of the Alamo". I'll post the lyrics if there's any interest.

Speaking of San Jacinto... My high school M. B. Lamar was (still there) bordered by a residential street called San Jacinto. The !@#$ city changed the name of the street to Sam J. Curlee.

HOW DARE THEY!

Who is Sam J Curlle anyway?

found him.. Still he is basically an unknown in the community. I, personally, would rather have the name San Jacinto back.

I'm glad you found him, 'cause about all I could find on Google were references to the street itself, not the person it was named for!

He wasn't from Arlington. He was from Itasca. I don't erally have any idea why Arlington would name a street for him. I could see Itasca honoring him thus, though.

I'm not a native, but I find the history of the Texas Revolution very moving, especially the Battle of the Alamo.

Anyway, good night!

Story of my life... :-(

Hey.... I'm so jealous of her I should slap myself. I have more than a few regrets sometimes.

I have more than a few regrets sometimes.

Me too. I was a heartbeat away from re-enlisting into a dream job in the CG. I would have been an E5 in an E6 billet as the OPS boss on a 110 ft boat out of Arcata, CA.

It was a dream job. #3 in command on a really active patrol boat, and lots of boat driving experience. I would've made Chief in a couple of years, easy.

Of course if I'd done that I'd probably have been a lifer, though the scary part of that is that I would only now be coming up on my retirement *this* year.

I'm not sure it would've been a bad choice.

We've done OK.... You've done well... I absolutely love my life, I love my husband and my horses, I wouldn't want Beth's life flying to Singapore even if I think it's awesome, but there's some years in between then and now that I could have spent flying... I didn't quit because I wasn't good at it... I lost the dream for fairly weak reasons.
