This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Sit back and relax awhile now before you have more serious pet-related injuries!
Bassett pups are adorable. I look forward to seeing them.
Been looking for trail ride report and pictures from you! Hope your ride went well yesterday!
Frog wasn't going on her ride till today. I think she said it would be Monday before she posted pictures.
I enjoyed your post about your ride.
I think I'm going to go ahead and give Harley his bath today. I have some Show Sheen so it will be easy to keep him clean. Mon. and Tues. look to be very busy, so if I get him all groomed up today, that is one chore done to get ready to go.
I think I'm going to try to get down to the arena in town tomorrow morning. I'd like to just go by myself and work on that bigger pattern with no one around giving advise:). I'm going to get enough of that at the clinic.
Becky
What neat dogs. I love long eared dogs. Choctawsquaw got a hound dog like what was on the Beverly Hillbillies. Her ears are sooo long, she is really cute. And BTW, they named her Emma:). I can't wait to see pictures of their pups. I've never seen a Bassat hound puppy.
Becky
Oh, and BTW, I've never heard of a "vine Maple". I didn't know a tree would do that. How cool.
Becky
Emmas a good name! : ) I promise some pics as soon as they are born. I am a bit apprehensive as it is their first litter and often Bassets have troubles, especially on their first, but my girls are healthy and sweet so I am hoping for the best. : ) newborn puppies have the longest ears too, totally out of proportion to the rest of them! : )
What kind of problems do they have?
Becky
I think that sounds like a good way to get yourself prepared mentally for the clinic.
The pictures you can see of our trail ride where the scenery is just ferns and tall trees, they've come through and cleaned out the vine maple. The ferns come right back. They go through about every ten years in the areas that will be logged and clean out the understory or it just gets impassible. You can sure tell the difference when we are in the areas that haven't been done yet, or where we are near the marshes and creeks that the loggers don't touch.
Well it oftens happens that a Basset will have to have a c-section. I do hope and pray ours won't. Ours are AKC registered and come from a long line of champions. Their mother had easy births, but their aunt did not. I am watching both girls closely and will monitor their temperatures etc. Any sign of a problem and our vet will be here, or I will get them there, whichever is best at the time. : )
I wish we had a trail as pretty as that near here! : )
I think every type of terrain has it's own beauty. But I like our area an awful lot.
We are splitting the difference. I had one set of boots for Bay, and we don't have another set yet for Cyn... so we booted the front legs on both of them.
Pony does OK when we leave.... she calls a little plaintively when we load up and go, and she sure wants reassurance when we get back, but I think she'll get more an more used to it.
My trainer has two wired haired weiner dogs, and those pups can go for miles. They have lots of stamina, and if they smell a rabbit or a squirrel, they're off! I'm fortunate that we have lots of trails out behing the barn, and if we do a loop out there, we take all three dogs with us. She also has a black lab. But if we're going on a ride where we have to cross roads or what not, they stay home.
I have given Harley a bath, and he looks so pretty. His mane and tail really came out very white this time. I guess the more often you use that special shampoo the more you will see results.
Becky
He's gorgeous! I hope he stays clean... of course, with your heat, I bet you can hose him down again if needed right before loading him in the trailer.
I often hose Bay down before loading in the trailer for a ride, and he's dry by the time we get there. stays cooler a little longer if it's warm, too.
lol. Just tell him it's for education purposes.
That last one ain't no chicken snake and I now know why guys put these "things" in the road.
Guy 1. He has to be at least 5 feet. Almost bit me twice before I got his head.
Guy 2. He's sumptin alright but did you see the one I killed last week. He was 7 feet long if not an inch. The #$%#^ thing bit right thru my boots. Another hair deeper and he'd have got me.
