I DID :-P Indianapolis, 1964 :-)
Vonzell found out today that the dog she'd had for 12 years just died. She didn't bring it up and didn't break down until Paula brought it up by asking her how she was doing, and even then she didn't give it out as an excuse.
Here I am on West Coast time, late as usual to the party ....
Well, darn. Just when I think I've got it all figured out (who will win, that is), the kids upset the apple cart. I was very disappointed in Carrie's second performance (a first for me) and in Vonzelle's first song (though if her dog died today, poor kid, I don't know if I could have sung at all in her shoes!). And astoundingly, I was really impressed by Anthony tonight. He's coming up strong -- something I would not have predicted at all a few weeks ago. He must be logging a lot of practice room time! Did they cut his second song short, BTW? He was so much better than Carrie with that song, but I think it was mostly the fault of the key. Carrie's rendition was pitched waaaaaaaay too low for her. She has a weak lower register anyway, and that just didn't fly. She needed to move up three or four tones. The show's music arranger either has it in for her or should be shot for general incompetence. Anthony's rendition, by contrast, was pitched right in the middle of his sweet spot. Sounded great! But I wish he'd quit wagging his index finger at us all ... LOL!
Let's see, what haven't I covered ... Bo's first song was apparently phoned in, but I thought he nailed the second one. That said, that song requires almost no range, so while his rendition was excellent, it didn't really show off what voice he has. And why does he insist on carrying the mike stand at all times? Is it his "lovey" or something? Will he lose his balance and fall over without it?
Dunno who I'm voting for tonight. For the first time, I'm tempted to vote for Wonder Bread. I'm off to think about it!
Actually, Josh Gracin and Clay Aiken sang the same song during Bee Gee's night (To Love Somebody). Of course, Clay's version was a whole lot better, and Josh said goodbye the next evening.
PS - I like Josh Gracin a lot, too - he's going to be appearing in Fremont CA next month, I think. Hoo rah!
He doesn't really have a career. He sings in bars and he worked for a sports equipment shop in Helena. That's not a career. Vonzelle and Carrie have sung in pageants so they have probably the same experience he has.
Judges shouldn't really blame her first song on that since her second song was much better.
WHOA! You have my eternal thanks!
Last night's show was a bit dull. It seemed like everybody had a good song and a bad song--and the good songs weren't that great.
But my Spidey-Sense was tingling over Vonzelle. Her tears, her cutesy Shirley Temple smile, her pimped-out dad suddenly appearing in the audience, causing her to cry even more--it was all too much for me. And now we find out that her dog died, too??? Sheesh! I don't believe it. Vonzelle knows she's in extreme danger this week and I think she was playing the sympathy card for all it was worth.
I swear to you all on the grave of Charlie Parker that I used this phrase without knowing about Vonzelle's dog dying being the reason behind her emotional breakdown.
That's why I say performing the same song on the same night shouldn't be allowed. It will always make one of the singers look really bad. Not fair.
Perfectly fair in my book, and should be required more often. Having the singers do the same song gives a very clear way to compare them head-to-head.
While Carrie wasn't great on the second song, she did a fine job on her first--especially considering it was a Dixie Chicks song (vomit). I take nothing for granted, but I believe she'll survive tonight. Vonzelle, though, turned off a lot of people with her waterworks. It didn't seem genuine to me at all. It seemed like manipulation.
Vonzelle falls tonight.
It's not fair when the arrangements are different. Carrie's version (the original) was too low and fast. Fedorov's version (the Simply Red cover) was more suited to his voice.
September 3... I sat by the radio and wished I was older. :^)
It's the contestant's job to work with the music director, as far as I'm concerned. If it's too low, get it transposed or pick a different song.
I thought the lower-register stuff on the Dixie Chicks song was muddy and dull. I've also heard better AI versions of that song (didn't Carrie do this -- well -- during the first Hollywood phase?).
Vonzelle, though, turned off a lot of people with her waterworks. It didn't seem genuine to me at all.
Personally, I thought Carrie's "interview" segment, where she tears up about missing her family looked fake -- the smile comes back a fraction of a second before the camera breaks away, which looked to me like she was pleased with her acting job.
I think Carrie has shown poor song selection, and seems to be coasting on the fact that she's the popular, pretty blonde girl, rather than actually trying to win this on talent.
Sorry, I couldn't join you last night, but I did watch later on Tivo.
I am dying to know... anyone got the skinny on what Vonzelle was crying about. My husband and I speculated on a death in the family, breakup with a boyfriend, or just upset for blowing the song?
Please help if anyone knows.
Apparently her dog (of twelve years or so) died. I had the unhappy irony of saying that she "screwed the pooch" on song #1 before I knew why... :/
