The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Mmmm...sunshine.

Contracts, LF? You poor dear! Sounds horrid.

I wanna go home, too. Got stuff to do. And tonight is the Irish session, too!

Well I do them because unless I get a contractor or two to help chip away at my pile of work I'll have to do it all myself. *grin*

Is the British version different than the books we have here?

Yes they are. Jen would know better just how much different. I just thought it would be cool to have them in the 'oroginal language'. ;o)

Sigh...naps are only so good when the phone keeps ringing.

Seriesly, I got

- four offers to refinance (actually, make that five, just got another...)
- one offer for satellite TV
- one "hold on for an important call"

But I did get a call from Chrysler and managed to convert the lease over to the loan program. Been needin' to do that.

And, other good news, wife's bother called. Seems he's got a buyer for Nana's house. Didn't get our asking price, but like I told him, it's more important now to just get it off her hands. She's not losing money. Just not making as much as she wanted.

In other words...not much to compare to, but if someone is looking for an inexpensive house right now, mine MIGHT be snapped right up!

There you go, that's positive thinking!!

Here's a copy of an e-mail I sent to Sgt Scott a bit ago.

Scott,

I'm a colleague of Tim's here in Dallas. I received a copy of a recent e-mail you'd sent Tim. I just wanted to briefly write to let you know you been "adopted" again.

I have a group of online friends who have been involved in various troop support projects for about 3 years now. We're a group of Tolkien fans who love our country and the wonderful folks who protect it. Our latest venture is sending a useful tool, a cool pocket knife, to as many deserving troops as we're able. If you get the chance, can read about it here:

http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/troops/knife.htm

You can also look here:

http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/

to see who we are. My screen name is "Professional Engineer". The guy who will actually send the knife to you is "300winmag". His name is XXXX, and he's in Michigan, so be on the lookout. I understand it will be mailed on 14JAN.

Thanks for your service Scott. We here at home want you guys to know "You Guys Rock!"

I'm a USAF vet, myself. My kid sister spent five years with the Screaming Eagles, including 8 months pounding sand during Desert Sheild/Desert Storm. Here's her picture, taken in Saudi, sometime in 1990.

As our budget allows, we also try to send care packages, so don't be surprised if you get one sometime.

Thanks again Soldier.

I thought maybe you'd gone graphic designer on us, and were including some sort of slick folding brochure about the HH troop support effort. LOL

On the knife front, I have a lot of news to report.

First, my email I sent to the knife manufacturer has borne fruit. The government sales manager was impressed with our work. The "Black Ops" knife is out of production, which is why Sportsman's Guide is blowing them out for $30. The factory has only seven knives left, but we can have them for $15 each.

Second, the company is selling updated versions of that knife to the government. It looks like we can buy them for the price they charge the government. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing, knowing how our government buys stuff.

Knives of any kind are a primo item for the troops, especially if Uncle Sam pays for them, and they're quality. I have the sinking feeling that the ones the government buys will suffer the same fate as the Ark of the Covenant in "Raiders of the Lost Ark". Warehoused for 50 years, then sold of as surplus for two cents on the dollar. So, I think we still have to send ours out as our special thanks to special troops.

The knife they're talking about is the CQB1SG. They don't have a picture of it on their web site, but I believe the government "G" means it's in desert colors. Here's the current CQB1S:

If this is the knife, I see I can still spend some "quality time" with each one, filing in the grooves into the handle.

Please keep prayers going for a successful deal. We're doing great, so far.

I just got to go inventory all the computers that the grad students use. Fun!

Heh...at least you don't have to verify weight sets.

That why we have a message machine. It plays the music "Concerning Hobbits". I've told my friends how to bypass the message and just start talking, cause if I'm here and I hear them, I'll pick up the phone. Most of them say they like listening to the music cause it's so soothing.

Of course I did have that one twit who called from some telemarketer (I could tell by the noise in the background) and said "That's the gayest phone message I've ever heard. Thank you for ruining my day.". I just LOL! Too bad I don't have caller ID on it, or I could have ruined her day REAL good by calling her manager. But I had to let the mostly ruined day suffice. ;o)

Clare and Joseph finally got to watch The Sixth Sense last night. Joseph left halfway through cause he was sleepy (he had a fever, and I let him stay home today) but Clare watched all the way through. She really like it!
