The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Snape has an interesting internal code of ethics. Most of what he does, IMO, is out of guilt over his past actions as a Death Eater, or some weird sense of... hatred/gratitude/obligation to James. And he's trying to live up to Dumbledore's trust and expectations.

Of course I'm not sure that Dumbledore is the kindly old man we see him as. Some of his actions are definitely manipulative and I no longer trust him. His interests aren't to keep Harry alive; he wants Voldemort dead. I think he might be willing to sacrifice Harry for that.

erp...sorry!...I was referring to the school admin who enacted his rage against me because my mother wouldnt buckle under his stupidity... he was incredibly nasty to me for no good reason.

Mainly he needs help in getting something for his girlfriend. Wife has already had the "no personal jewelry is not appropriate at this time" talk.

The fact that he's actually thinking about it this year is major progress.

Ah... well, sounds like he needs a little help. How long has this girl been his girlfriend?

I think that could easily be said of Gandalf :D :D Like we are supposed to believe that he was caught completely by surprise with Pippin's perfidy?! I tend to think Gandalf had a toss-'em-in-and-let-them-sink-or-swim attitude toward the hobbits. Perhaps this is wise...perhaps not. I mean, how do you explain what happens to them before it happens?

Dumbledore is not as obvious about it, but with you I have to wonder just what he is about.

I guess I am too used to Tolkien's method of story telling. Seeing the HP through only one set of eyes is very frustrating at times.

I think since choir tour in June. He didn't really start talking to us about her tho until the school year started up.

We haven't allowed official "dates." But he's met her with a group of friend at her homecoming dance. And they've met to go shopping, etc. Usually in a group.

Yeah, and Harry doesn't always have the most interesting point of view. There were a lot of interesting things happening in other places, especially during the last book, that we don't know about at all.

Right... so jewelry is definitely not appropriate. But "nothing" is not a good idea either.

So maybe once she kills off Harry in Book 7, she'll go back and write some of the side stories.

Yeah. His mom is helping him shop for her.

Her friend suggested a birthstone ring...we stopped that one.

That would be nice. Of course, I've thought she could have killed of Harry in book one and just written "Neville Longbottom and the Chamber of Secrets". Which was a long-standing joke in the fandom until we read book 5 and said "oh... it really could have been Neville".

Amen to that...although I do like Harry. I was actually frightened for the boy at the end of GoF...hadn't been that worried over a character since...well, since Frodo! Which OoP was sort of anti-climactic...spoiler in white : it hurt more that an innocent bystander like Cedric was wasted than Sirius...not to say I dont like the character of Sirius...but one kind of expects the good-guy-who-is-so-loveable-and-loved-by-the-main-character to sacrifice himself.

so tell me your thoughts on Snape?!

From what we see, he's actually being pretty mature about it. He talks about her more to his mom than to me. That's okay.

But his mom gave him the "treat any girl you date like the woman you want to marry" speech a good while back. She said she could tell it registered because she watched the wheels turning as he figured it out.

But it wasn't a self-sacrifice. It was really dumb. And Dumbledore could have prevented it.

Snape... I think he's a very confused man. He is firmly on the side of angels but isn't nice. I think he is going to have a major role to play and may even end up dead, and that he is going to have yet more conflicted guilt issues over Sirius - since if Snape had been able to get over his hatred of Harry, Harry would have learned what he needed to not to be deceived by Voldemort's legilmancy.

Good advice. I'm sure he'll do things right...

Ok, getting off for some time. See you all later.

Yeah, that *was* a "nice" little revelation! I like Neville too.

Corin, I don't think she is going to kill off Harry. She has already announced what the last sentence of book 7 is going to be...and he's definitely alive for that one.

There are a lot of little substories that JKR has woven in...and as you know with my obsession with Pippin, I love substories. I'm itching to know what they are.

help me out here Jen - - if JKR is always saying and proving in her stories that things are not always what they appear to be, why must I completely accept that certain characters will never change at all (you know of whom I speak! LOL) That just doesn't sit right with me. I keep thinking "how unfair!"

Corin, I don't think she is going to kill off Harry.

I know. I just say things like that for the reaction.

Off myself. Boss's office (that's me) is hosting the agency for a "Holiday Reception" this afternoon. Gotta go get stuff ready...

Any interest here in a group reading of LoTR again?

"You do not understand!" said Pippin. "You must go - and therefore we must, too. Merry and I are coming with you. Sam is an excellent fellow, and would jump down a dragon's throat to save you, if he did not trip over his own feet; but you will need more than one companion on your dangerous adventure."

In other words, yes. I would like to, myself, conspiracy and all.

Besides...you NEED people of intelligence on this party.

ANNOUNCEMENT : WE ARE GOING TO HOMESCHOOL YAY!!!
