The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Yep. Did I hear right that the HP release date is July 16?

So you'd start the thread with The Hobbit?

I'm not sure I know where our copy is. And I need a new copy of LOTR. Mine is falling apart.

I thought we'd just mingle it here on the HH thread. And yeah - we thought we'd start with The Hobbit.

New books? You still have a few days before Christmas.... good time to hint to those who may not have a gift for you yet. :~D

Glad there's still something to look forward to, now that all the LOTR stuff is done...

Not the same scale, of course, but I'm still interested! Might actually buy the book this time. I don't own any of the others.

It's fun to go to a midnight party and wait. Last time we got our two copies first and ran out of the store chanting "We got Potter!" (which is a quote from one of the books) as the other people in line cheered.

Took us the whole weekend last time to read. I wonder how long this one will be. If it's only 400 pages or so... we might be able to do in on Saturday and if I can get someone to help me with tickets I might get home.

I'll prolly just prefer to pick up my own copies in paperback as we read them. I don't do too well with hinting for gifts...remember?

We did let Jr. go shopping with his girlfriend on Sunday. He didn't by her gift, but he spent 75% of the money he had on his mom and Luke. They were nice gifts, but I gave him the "you have to budget for the amount of people you have to buy for" speech.

As of this morning, he had $3.00 left and had to buy lunch today. And no, he'd not bought anything for his girlfriend, his aunt and uncle or me. I gave him an advance with a warning to shop better.

Budgets can't be strict at Christmas... the perfect gift doesn't always cooperate.

YAY! Its coming soon then! I am looking forward to it!

Spoilers in white text :

I understand some spoilers have been released on a HP site concerning a few of the chapters, one of them supposedly called 'Draco's Detour' which set off all sorts of speculation. I have no doubt Draco will remain the nasty bully JKR intends him to be, so I have to wonder if this isnt another one of her famous red herrings. Personally, I think if she doesnt start wrapping up loose ends in this 6th books, Im going to be a bit put out. No one should have characters in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, or even 6th act of a story that are the same as they were in the 1st and 2nd. That includes Snape, Dumbledore, and others as well as Draco.

Heck, in LOTR we knew by the end of Two Towers that the hobbits had grown beyond who they were in Fellowship. Why do we have to wait until the 7th act to have it all become so clear?

Rant /OFF.

Budgets can't be strict at Christmas...

There's 'strict', then there's 'staying within your means' and 'planning ahead'. ;~)

No, some of the characters you mention change, but she sets up the change at the very beginning. Look at Neville. Sure, he majorly improves in OotP, but that was hinted at in the first book.

And Snape is of course a horse of a totally different color.
