A string of pearls wouldn't even make these glorified horse blankets wearable!

Is Fall over yet?

Good Morning Sweetie. I made a poncho to wear for warmth when I was preggers the first time,,, back in 1968. I've always associated them with maternity wear.

It isn't only the ponchos. There are lots and lots of really 'bad' things on the racks this year. Thank God for Talbots. And I must say, even Talbots is drifting away from truely classic stuff.

Fun essay! thanks. I remember the ponchos. prolly still have some in bag/box in attic.

they are easy but not too glamorous.. (but that one wispy one which is more style than warmth looks okay to me.. or is it the pretty model?)

They do also cover some "body flaws" .. if you know what I mean? Remember the TV ad a few decades ago showing three attractive teens walking on the beach. Two were in skimpy bathing suits & one was wearing a sweat shirt.

Ad asked, do you know why the middle girl was wearing a sweatshirt? of course it was some diet aid product. She didn't look HEAVY per se.. but probably was packing a bit more than the slender model types next to her.

The ponchos struck me the same way

I adored Ronald Reagan. Just looked over some of the pix from his funeral in DC... and came across this in morning email ..want to share as most are so appropriate:

How do you come up with such great thread ideas?

Ponchos, who ever would have believed that they would make a comeback?

Those ponchos would look really nice if accessorized with an Urban Sombrero from Peterman's. :-)

I'm praying retailers are dead wrong. Wasn't a fan of the poncho in the 70's and my heart hasn't grown any love for them in 2004.

As with all fashion ideas that have been brought back from the 70's DEAD, bell bottoms, hip huggers, halter tops, platform shoes, I'm hoping the poncho will return to it's deserved reward very soon!

I never wore a poncho, cause I was almost as overweight then as I am now, and ponchos DO look like horse blankets even MORE on fat women, than they do on skinny ones. And this trend of the little short poncho that doesn't even reach the waist is even more STOOPID looking than the regular length one! I will admit to having made and worn a crocheted vest, back in the day, but that's as far as I ever went with THAT trend!

This is sooooooooo appropriate for today. Hobbit Lass has wanted a poncho since school started. I remember them from the seventies. Horrid things. "If you want it, spend your own money. I'm only buying you clothes that I like too." I'm a mean mom. So far I've been able to divert her to other must-have clothing. At breakfast, she piped up, "See, Mom, even Katie Couric is wearing one."

We have to shop for black shoes and a couple of new tops this weekend. I am going to get hammered again.

Well ya know, "Everything old is new again"

Its a fashion retread slightly changed, you have to be at least 6ft tall to look remotely good in a poncho

Other than that I applaud the fashion "trend" back to feminine clothes and the colors for this winter are great! Lots of deep pink, greens, blue, orange.....I love black but that's all you see but not this winter.......getting ready to purchase a pink coat myself........and looking for a gown to wear to next January's Freeper Inaugural Ball!!!

I am so glad you are talking about this silly Pancho trend. I hate panchos. As an American of Hispanic background, I do not wish to start wearing a "Zarape" again, LOL.

Har! Granddaughters aged 8 & 10 are getting these for Christmas. Guess I'll hold off on giving them to my daughters. However, I did make one in a hurry the other night: it's a short one to wear over my shoulders instead of a bed jacket. I bought a fleece baby blanket, folded it in half twice, and cut a hole in it for my head. Works just great, but it is not for outside use.

I have to admit that ponchos look especially bad on short women with curves and short legs--- you tend to look like an army tent with feet.

HOWEVER--- I have seen a coupla really cute ones that are more like fine ribbon net, body clinging and not too bad--- but you still need long legs.

Thread about Flippin' and Mama T. on Dr. Phil.

We watched it on tape last night. Dr. "Family First" Phil almost romanticized JFK's leaving his marriage when his daughters were 6 & 9.

OK, the fashionistas are missing the point when they complain about the poncho this time around

The point is supposed to be that there's nothing else under the poncho except the babe wearing it.

The mind (and libido) boggles.

Hi, Betty,

I just saw this thread at the top and had to post--I cannot stand ponchos.

I was watching Good Morning America today, hoping to catch Ann Coulter (she must have been on earlier?), and they had a segment on ponchos. Uggg...

And while we're at it, what about skirts & shirts with brown, orange, and yellow diagonal stripes?

70's clothes--they were ugly when I was in high school, and they're still ugly today. :)

Is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?
