The Hobbit Hole XIV - Hill and Water Under Sky

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Hill and water under sky

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Thanks! That's harder to remember than the Seven Dwarves :)

Hmm, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs... Seven rings for the Dwarf Lords...

What's up with Dwarves and the number seven, anyway?

Sorry for being a bit late in replying. I didn't know Jim Rob was getting a knife. I'll send you one in replacement. More, if you can find deserving folks (Jim Rob is certainly deserving, since without this place, none of this would have fallen into place).

Total knife purchases to date have been 301, including those still in stock. 255 have been shipped, to active duty, veterans, and a few Hobbit Hole folks. I'd have to dig through my records, but I would estimate 200+ have gone out to the troops, so far. In many cases, there were bulk shipments, so one person got several knives to give out.

I have to admit, my records are a bit hazy. I would have been more diligent at startup, if I had known that the number would be this big already, after only about a year.

As far as the one "hit" on the web site, did we ever get an address for that person?

I was wondering the same thing, LOL! Actually I think I've read an argument that Tolkien was somewhat influenced by "Snow White". Also I know he drew some of the Dwarf names from the Norse eddas, so maybe there's a seven in there somewhere.

Could be! Seven has been a mystical number for a long time, after all.

Time to get to bed, here... have a good night!

It only occurred to me yesterday that since we'd be mooting with him, we should give him a knife. :~D

I'm happy to donate mine, and I've also got the proto knife for my purse, so no need to send another for me if there are troops in need first! :~D

He send his APO mailing address which we FRMailed you with his note. Do you still have that from ecurbh or should he send it again?

Here's his note to jog the memory... He found us from the engraved addy on a knife he saw. Not sure how many he needs for his group, but his email addy was also included, and we can send a not asking if you want:

"My name is Charles [last name removed] and I am stationed in Iraq with the US Army. I have been here over six months and happened upon a fellow soldier that proudly showed his treasured knife that he received. I too would be honored to own such a knife but more important would like to reward some of the troops here with them. They have worked hard and deserve more than I can ever repay. Anything that you can provide would be greatly appreciated. If this is too much to ask, I do understand. Over half of these fine soldiers have served our country through 2 wars, two dating back to Vietnam.

Thanks again for honoring the soldiers that serve. We greatly appreciate the support.

CHARLES"

elf-boy is all better!!!

Yesterday we went to my mother's because it was tax-free day and she offered to buy him school clothes (WOOHOO!). First things first though, we went to the doctor to get the all clear. The doc said it was a viral infection that had run its course ~ no dairy for 24 hours and no playing with other kiddos until fever is completely gone, but otherwise he is fine. At the time, he was still on motrin. His last dose was yesterday morning at 6 am. Currently, he has no food restrictions and a normal temp! I am so glad that he feels better. ~While we were there, he read Hop on Pop to me in the waiting area. (he isn't a genius, but he will only be entering kindergarten in a couple of weeks.)

So, after the doc visit, we set off for a trip to gramma's. Dang she spoils him! (Oh well, as if I am not spoiled, LOL.) She bought three red, three white, and three light blue polo shirts, two khaki pants, two navy pants, one khaki shorts, one navy shorts, spiderman boxers, spiderman watch, spiderman t-shirt, two white oxford shirts, and some goggles with snorkle.

earlier in the day, He had a $10 that was burning a hole in his pocket, so I let him buy a spiderman plush doll, and a spiderman action figure with motorized helicopter, using his own money.

If the spiderman infatuation lasts as long as the blues blues infatuation, I am in way over my head.

My name is Charles [last name removed] and I am stationed in Iraq with the US Army.

If it's Major Charles R., I sent him a dozen. One for himself, one for each of the ten oldtimers he mentioned, and a "spare".

I'll send you a replacement. You can always give it away. If they arrive in time, yours will have a serrated blade. Only ten Hobbit Hole knives had serrated blades, prior to the 20 I'm getting in any day now.

All done! That was a good movie. It's going to be really interesting comparing the movie with this anime.

Glad elf-boy is better! A Spiderman infatuation can last a long time, though--I just bought the novel myself today :)
