Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
A sudden tree or standing stone
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

I had heard that the bridge had fallen due to "time and nature". >I'm sure the original one had fallen, but there's a nice new one. We took our kids there two years ago on a homeschool 'field trip'. We met at the Battle Road visitors center, walked the road taken by Paul Revere and Joseph Warren on their ride to raise the Minutemen. I didn't know until that trip that Paul Revere never made it to Concord. He was captured by the British and held for several hours, but let go because he happened to be unarmed. His wife had convinced him to leave his pistol at home before he left on his ride. Fortuitous, huh? When he was released, instead of continuing West toward Concord, he went north to raise the alarm to the towns in that direction.
At the North Bridge, the kids did an interactive program where the Guide gave several of the kids cards with someone's name and a quote on it. As he went through the explanation of what was happening, he would prompt the kids to read the cards. Then at the end, he had them divide into two groups, and they pretended to be the Minutemen and the 'Regulars' (British) and ran at each other in a mock battle at the Bridge. It was one of the more interesting lessons I've ever had, and I was just a spectator!

Got the wireless thing figgered out for Jr. All I had to do was move the unit to the top of the computer armoire. It'll reach his room now.
'Course it sux fer him that we took away all electronics last night. Well, except fer his cell phone...that he lost. His computer time is now linked to his study time. If he studies for 15 minutes, he gets 15 minute computer time, etc.
And, he's gotta study in front of us.

Wait, you mean you don't take a milk bath every morning? Not usually after I'm dressed.

Maybe if we homeschool Luke, we'll visit ya when we study the American Revolution. With our location now, I'm actually excited about teaching him American history. We can drive to the site and do the lesson there.
'Course, unlike my teachers growin' up, I will make sure he knows there was history happenin' in other parts of the country.

Doesn't your cat alarm work? I have THREE cat alarms...none of them work.
Fritzi is the closest I have to a decent alarm animal. If I START to get up, he puts up a racket if I roll over and try to go back to sleep. But if I haven't even woken up...he's useless.

Fell out of the fridge.)Oh man...that would have caused my Dad to have a conniption fit and then some. Open containers in the fridge is NOT something he takes kindly to. In fact, it may bother him even MORE than finding mostly-full glasses that people poured and didn't drink, or barely-sipped cans of soda.
I think Stephen finally stopped wasting milk by pouring more than he could drink when Dad did his usual rant and then poured the whole thing over Stephen's head. ;-)

Or in other countries, at the same time. Odd how many people I've met who seem to think only one thing could happen in the world at any given point in time.

I remember hearing that verse as a kid and getting goosebumpy and teary-eyed even before I had a real understanding of it. I had forgotten it. Thanks for posting it!

My problem with my history education in Virginia is that one year we would have Virginia history:
We would study Jamestown thru the colonial period and by about May we'd be hitting the Civil War and have about a week and a half to do the next 100 years.
The next year we'd have American history...start in Jamestown...thru the colonial period and by about May we'd be hitting the Civil War and have about a week and a half to do the next 100 years.
When I studied American history in college it was an odd experience focusing almost exclusively on Massachusetts.
I try to read history when I get the time. I am still painfully ignorant of the early 1900s and beyond.

Mornin' all.
I'm working at home today on the video project. Up until I have to go over to the advertising company to talk to the script writer. But, their office is nicely close to my house! :-)

Mornin'
I'm trying to get to work here. But I'm still trying to come to terms with this whole abuse/torture/photograph crap that's coming out of Iraq.
The timing, the fact that there are supposedly 1,000 photos, makes me think it's all been planned. Well, maybe not, but the RATS are exploiting it.
We're at war folks...with our nextdoor neighbors.

I think we did pretty much the same in Texas schools. Rushing through the 20th century.
I have been fortunate IMO because my dad is a history buff. I think I knew more about history when I started 1st grade than a lot of my classmates knew when they graduated high school. History was the only topic my dad would talk with me about growing up and it fascinated me. I would listen to him talk for hours and yet later I found out it bored my brothers silly.
