My problem with my history education in Virginia is that one year we would have Virginia history:

We would study Jamestown thru the colonial period and by about May we'd be hitting the Civil War and have about a week and a half to do the next 100 years.

The next year we'd have American history...start in Jamestown...thru the colonial period and by about May we'd be hitting the Civil War and have about a week and a half to do the next 100 years.

When I studied American history in college it was an odd experience focusing almost exclusively on Massachusetts.

I try to read history when I get the time. I am still painfully ignorant of the early 1900s and beyond.

I think we did pretty much the same in Texas schools. Rushing through the 20th century.

I have been fortunate IMO because my dad is a history buff. I think I knew more about history when I started 1st grade than a lot of my classmates knew when they graduated high school. History was the only topic my dad would talk with me about growing up and it fascinated me. I would listen to him talk for hours and yet later I found out it bored my brothers silly.

Yup, the most annoying requirements we had were the "you must teach PA history in 6th grade and American history in 8th grade and World history..." Almost as bad as the "you must teach fire safety every year" requirement.

I liked to learn history, once I reached high school, by reading a biography or a book on a subject. Maybe we'd chose a period, but we didn't often use actual texts. That was a little harder to do with stupid state requirements.
